The elder George Bush, father of the current president

Isn't "George H. W. Bush" a lot easier? You never read, "the elder John Adams, father of John Quincy Adams."

Oh JOY! Billy Clinton isn't being viewed as badly as he used to! HOORAY! I'm glad we held a poll on that. Because we all know how accurate those are.

If Reagan is the Teflon President because a couple of scandals didn't stick to him, what does that make Bush, who has practically had a scandal a day on average, yet nothing sticks?

John F. Kennedy 84%

2006-06-16 02:42:19 PM
I'd be curious to see the poll reordered such that only people who were 18 or older at the time "count" for each president. So if you were 18 in 1963 you get to rank all of 'em, 18 in '64 and you get Johnson forward, etc.

/"Johnson was as big a crook as Nixon and get off my lawn and take that peanut farmer with you."

2006-06-16 03:01:54 PM
Unless a president, like Nixon, has a lot of scandal during their administration, usually former presidents see their popularity rise after they leave office. Bush's popularity when he gets out of office will all depend on what happens with Iraq before and after he leaves office as well as if any of the alledged scandals stick to him.

2006-06-16 03:02:43 PM
The more seriously you got shot, the better a Pres you were

Kennedy = #1
Reagan = #2

The only reason I can think of Carter having the same rating as Clinton is that he didn't have to face a right-wing douchebag noise machine.

This is not surprising, either we get worse leaders as time goes on or people become more wistful for the past as their lives progress (perhaps for the worse) over time.

2006-06-16 03:17:01 PM
Bush is such a consummate fark up that it hyper-romanticizes the past.

Instant halcyon days.

Mr. Clarence Butterworth: No he wasn't, he resigned and was pardoned by that weasel Ford.

He left office in disgrace (and police custody) - that's a lot more accounting than Clinton faced or Bush is likely to face.

2006-06-16 03:36:58 PM
While I agree Clinton set a precedence (with not being held accountable and whatnot), Clinton didn't declare war on the Constitution like Bush has, so I can't really say what they did is comparable.

Agnosticator: Republicans think less of Clinton then they do Nixon and Johnson. Who woulda thunk that?

You realize that "Baby Killer" Johnson was a Democrat, right?

/Not a Republican, and I don't think less of Clinton than Nixon. Nixon's crimes were worse, but he was driven out of office over them. The real crime in Clinton's case was not his, but Congress', in not holding him to the same standards of the law as everyone else.

I thought Nixon did that.

I thought FDR, Lincoln, etc. etc. ad infinitum did that.

Sloth_DC: Nixon was held accountable.

But, but Clinton was impeached! And his law license was revoked! As some posters feel the need to constantly remind us when someone dares to say that Clinton's worst scandal was over a blowjob.

Clinton screwed an intern. Bush is screwing the whole country and is more corrupt than Nixon.

Sums it perfectly in a nutshell.

Headso: I dunno, I heard Teddy Roosevelt was kinda a loose cannon...

Not a loose cannon, a badass. He had principles and he stuck to them. He was filthy rich yet supported the estate tax because he believed it helped create a level playing field for Americans. When he took the country to war, his sons served in said war.

It was drummed up by the right for their power grab. They have to always have a boogey man. Overall he ran the country from the middle.

42% of Republicans approve of Nixon?

2006-06-17 12:52:34 AM
I think 83% of Kennedy's approval rating comes from the fact he banged Marilyn Monroe. Das sum high-quality VaG.

2006-06-17 01:46:50 AM
Republicans hate clinton cause deep down they're jealous of all the scamming he did, somehow it offended their morals. I just thought it was funny. The guy is a Rhoades scholar, yet he can't keep his dick in his pants for 8 years on the job. Yet America was better off with him in charge, for more people in middle class, than under any president in the last 40 years. People don't realize how much better off we had it with a balanced budget, with at least an attempt at health care reform, with the stock market going well and the FCC not handing the internet over to the big telcos. Clinton was solidly in favor of the middle class thriving, even if it meant the very top costing them more. Probably what cost him popularity with the Republican Elite. That 'vast right wing conspiracy' was made up of rich Republicans, pundits, all those asshat on Fox news types, and for some reason their rally round the flag BS sold to people who hated him for screwing interns. Like I said, I liked a booming economy and more intelligent foreign policy. But he was hated by the military people, remember all that "Coward in chief" crap? Now for some reason Bush, who never served, who skated out of vietnam, then went AWOL from Alabama, is not a coward, he's a he man who says "Bring it on."

2006-06-17 02:39:47 AM
Kuta: LIES! He never had sexual relations with that woman!

No, the lie was saying that he didn't.

But that wasn't his mistake.

His mistake was that he didn't take the person who asked the question and proceed to punch their teeth into the back of their throat.

2006-06-17 02:55:21 AM
Generation_D: Republicans hate clinton cause...

Republicans hate Clinton because he was elected President.

That's it.

If "Joe Blow" had been elected President, they would have hated him instead.

It doesn't matter.

Republicans don't hate out of morals, or philosophy, or ethics, or standards.

They hate because Rush, and Sean, and Bill, and Ann, and Malkin, and Will, and Sewell, and Ingrahm, and Juan, and Novak, and Ollie, and Sullivan, and Safire, and Brit, and Eva, and Liddy, and Cokie, and Medved, and Scheiffer, and Peggy, and Hitchens, and Goldberg, and McLaughlin, and Mathews, and Stossel, and the rest of the "liberal media", has been pimping liberal-hate for *years* on talk radio and cable "news".

Hour after hour. Day after day. Week after week. Year after year.

Every. Single. Day. For. Years.

This is not exaggeration. It sounds like it, but its not.

The next elected Democrat will face the same treatment or worse.

Guaranteed.

2006-06-17 01:46:55 PM
In retrospect, Reagans dumb ass should have probably been impeached over Iran-Contra.

2006-06-19 06:11:48 PM
Nah, Reagan dodged a bullet (ha, ha) by throwing half his staff to the wolves for the Iran-Contra affair. You can't pardon an impeachment, after all.

It's OK - we'll all look back on Dubya and laugh. Not a belly laugh, mind you, more of a mirthless, nervous laugh as we remember just how close we came to falling, but laugh nonetheless.
