"The fabric is the length of one-third of a football field and about 3 stories tall."

Football fields are not units of measurement! Argh! And it only makes it worse to break it into sub-units. Is "One-third of a football field" really easier to visualize than "a hundred feet"?

For most people it is.

Hurm....

Article: "The Guinness Book of World Records has created two new categories for the project - world's largest camera and world's largest photograph"

This site claims there already is a "world's largest photograph" category.

Sure it is, I'd bet money that a lot more people asked would know how many yards in a football field than would know how many feet in a mile.

Now cubit, that's some hinky unit of measurement.

Hell, neither are stories.

OlafTheBent: I hope there's some Stop Bath in there somewhere...

Probably no real need in this case. I doubt the development time will be very precise anyway so they can let the fixer do the job of the stop. Maybe a water bath between the two. Also, since the stop is the nastiest of all the photo chemicals, not having a few hundred gallons around would be a good thing.

I'd just like to see them try to make a contact print from the negative.

Is it 1/3 of:
- an American Football field
- Canadian Football field (it is a Canadian website)
- a Football Football field (soccer)

you can use vinegar as stop. 2:1 dilution with water, i think. so not all that nasty actually!

but yeah, fix is a fine stop, its just not really recommended because going form developer to fix messes up the fix way faster. and since theyre just going to be making the one big print, it doenst really matter if the fix gets messed up by the developer, and its just one more thing that can go wrong.

that said, im looking forward to seeing this, its gonna be cool!

im doing a camera obscura this summer, in my bedroom.

Extremely cool.

I remember my first exposure to a Camera Obscura in Edinburgh, many years ago. That one had a lens, and a horizontal table, about twenty feet across, for the image. Simple technology, but strangely impressive.

This one has no lens - just a pinhole (probably much larger than a pinhole), so I imagine the 'largest photograph' category is probably 'largest pinhole photograph'.

And for those younguns who think 10MPixels is high resolution, just think of the resolution of this image.

Very cool indeed.

ArcadianRefugee This is a record for an individual camera and a photo taken on a single medium (one sheet or piece of film). The one you linked was a conglomeration of photos used to make up the larger picture.

/10 days exposure? That's some pretty got-damn slow film for something right outside the door.

(from article): After exposing the fabric for up to 10 days, they will develop it in a huge tub ...

Well, all you have to do is grab a lawn chair and sit there for upwards of 72 hours, and you MIGHT be in it...

The football field unit of measure debate reminds me of one of Murphy's laws of electronics engineering.

II.6. Dimensions will always be expressed in the least usable term. Velocity, for example , will be expressed in Furlongs per Fortnight.

While I can understand your frustration, at least the length of a football field is standardized. I'm a little amused that you chose that one instead of "three stories," a measurement that could be anything from 18 feet to 40 feet or worse.

I used to make Camera Obscuras in various academic buildings in college. People would always wonder why there was a tiny hole drilled in the door, but when the lights went out it was fun watching people walk upside down across the walls. Art Geeks repsresent!!!

C'mon, guys and gals. This is actually pretty cool, regardless of the unit of measurement. $1600/$2600 is a little steep for art on my wall, but this is something I'm just going to have to see.

For those of you who dig such things, check out the gigapxl project (Link). I saw the display last year at San Diego's MOPA when Comic-Con was going on. The imnages are awesome. The gentleman behind the project (remember 1 gigapixel = 1,000 megapixels) was also featured in Wired Magazine about 16 months ago.

Finally a camera that can capture an image of Nutsack Squirrel in the proper aspect ratio.
