Why don't we name streets after the true victims:

Freedom Mtn.
Liberty River
Constitution Ave.
Human Rights Park
Reason and Logic Hwy.
Gun Rights Blvd.
Privacy Valley

/the list goes on and on...

Perhaps some future generation will look upon the names, learn how they fell, and ask...

"Why?"

Why the fark should we wait for our kids to ask "why" when we can do it right now?

It's going to make me vomit when Bush manages to take credit and say these men died for freedom...

When you think about it, it's not much reward for having given your life for a bunch of lies. It's patronizing as well, even if it does serve as a reminder. Maybe all of the streets in Crawford, TX. should have the names changed.

We'll run out of cannon fodder before we run out of roads.

We are.

But our voices are being drowned out by the wall that seperates us from public conciousness.

It is a wall named "mainstream media", and the politicos who orchestrated this war in the first place stand atop it, bullhorns in hand.

I agree with Walt_Jizzney, if you go above and beyond the call of duty that's what makes you a hero no matter who you are: cop, firefighter, or everyday joe schmoe who happens to do something heroic like save someone's life. If all of the sudden we want to qualify their loss of life I'd say it's on the part of remorse for realizing they shouldn't have been put over there in the first place.

I guess it is heroic sitting in your mom's basement being a troll on an internet post.

Reporter: Could you answer a question that all of us are asking?
Sergeant Muldoon: We'll try.
Reporter: Why is America raging this ruthless war in Vietnam?
Sergeant Muldoon: Foreign policy decisions are not made by the military. A soldier goes where he is told to go, and fight whom is told to fight.

From the movie The Green Berets. Blame the inept leaders, not the man/woman on the ground.

In this movie, streets and buildings in the military base are named after fallen soldiers. As one Green Beret, Sgt. Provo, lays dying he asks his Colonel for a specific building to be named for him. The Colonel is reluctant, however later in the film we see the building adorned with the sign "Provo's Privvy" (An outdoor toilet). Kinda sums up the war, eh?

we're not trolls, it's just that naming a street after some little boy's dead daddy is about as retarded as patting him on the back and saying, "sure, daddy's gone forever, but he died for a good cause." it's just that we can't say that latter honestly.

Got to stop you, there.

The one basic freedom this administration has NOT gone after is one's right to own a gun.

Apparently the majority of Americans believe that to be the ONE freedom that is NOT open to compromise.

Why else do you think this administration can exercise illegal wire-tapping, search and seizure and indefinate detainment without trial and still be considered "Defenders of Freedom"...

While Clinton's administration suggested that steps be taken to keep criminals from purchasing guns and was denounced as a "Dictator"?

Um no- you, and many others, seem to be confusing bravery with heroics. No one denys that most of the troops are brave. Heroics requires much more tho.

Hmm, I guess the thought is nice. However, changing street names is VERY COSTLY. And I aint just talking about the street signs. Think of everything that has an address, letterhead, phone books, maps, frikkin OnStar. To change an existing street name is dumbass from that stance.

Using initials and spaces is also dumbass, and only insures that these streets will be confusing and hard to intrepret for eternity.

That cities planner is pissed and shiatting themselves at the same time...

I'm with you. I feel bad for their families as it always sucks to lose a loved one, but when you join the armed forces that's what you sign up for. You are at the will of the president for better or for worse.

*raises hand*

Because at least 51% of this country equates to a mass of large, (somewhat) hairless bears essentially roaming the countryside, looking for things to shoot and then devour while belching up peals of laughter to the latest Blue Collar Comedy Tour denouncement of them durn towel heads and them thar hippie northerners before pissing on the loafers of anyone stupid enough to try to go to college and get some sissified, liberal education?

Curious, people keep saying heroics require more. Just what more does it require? Or do you mean that the deed / doer in question must be doing something you completely agree with?

Or is it just you have to save the princess from Koopa Troopas?

There was a time that it took more than just dying to be a hero...I just feel bad for the friends and families.

I hope they save some street names for the upcoming war with Iran,

ya know the one that will probably cause the draft to be reinstated?

I hope I get a interstate named after me after I am plucked from my cushy politics job in a "random" draft because I lobby against Republicans.

Good thing you didn't start using broad generalizations. Because that would just make you look as stupid as the group you're trying to make look stupid.

Very good, RoachAC. You get a gold star.

Now, can anyone tell me why America is the only nation on earth where people like this don't starve to death?

I'll give you a hint, it starts with "L".

About as useful as a yellow ribbon magnet on your car. Want to support the troops? Lobby for better pay and updated equipment.

Better yet, cut a check for the falsely charged Haditha marines defense fund.

Now I can feel like I'm honoring them when I blast down the road in a Hummer with the AC on, pouring gas out of the windows just for the hell of it.

Don't forget to slap the American flag and yellow "Support Our Troops" magnets to the bumper to really show you care!

This will come off as callous, and I'm sure I will get flamed big-time, but I gotsta say, this reminds me of all the post-9/11 accounts of the people who died.

"Oh, he was a loving husband."
"She always had a smile on her face," etc., etc.

Over 3,000 people got senselessly killed that day, I understand, but I have a hard time believing there wasn't at least ONE asshole in the entire bunch.

See, the trick here is - I was speaking to one person, so that doesn't really make a goose/gander situation.

I never did understand why [Reagan] was considered some holy saint by republicans

It's the right-wing way to not show weakness. Deify your own and destroy the opposition so that you maintain your power. It has nothing to do with the content of the character of your friends or enemies.

Walt_Jizzney

Here in AZ, we jumped on the Patriaotic bandwagon by renaming our "Sqaw Peak Parkway 9AZ 51)" to "Piestewa Parkway" or somesuch after the gal who dies IN A TRUCK ACCIDENT when that one gal was "taken hostage" and "Put up a valiant fight" (jessica somesuch..forgot her name). In any case, it was retarded. She wasn't a hero; she was just unlucky.

Laurie Piestewa was a Native-American single mother who joined the forces so that she would be able to care for her family financially. I believe she was the first female U.S. soldier to be killed in combat in Iraq, and she died from an attack on the Humvee she was driving that picked up Jessica Lynch when Pvt. Lynch escaped/was freed/whatever. Not that that makes her a hero or not, but that's the story as I remember it. Didn't get much airtime, I guess miz Lynch was more photogenic (aka blonde and white).

dying is a good start, but there should be a lot of killing in there too; and saving princesses if possible. if not, then the more quantifiably you save people the more heroic you are. people will always try to pitch your death as an act of altruism, but the harder they have to justify it the less heroic it is.

jumping on a grenade to save 12 men in your platoon and a princess after just killing 9 dudes with a bayonet == SUPER HEROIC

holding a position far after neighboring posts have been overcome to allow a retreat for your fellow soldiers == PRETTY HEROIC

getting blown up in a humvee by friendly fire while handing out leaflets to kids in hopes of saving americans from some nebulous future terror attack == NOT VERY HEROIC
