I won't buy ATI either because of how much they sucked way back when.

You must be old... like me! ATI is perma-blacklisted because of how much their drivers and software used to suck. I refused to pay them a dime, no matter how good they are now. Fark those bastards for wasting so many hours of my time with farking BSODs, crashing apps, etc.

Anyways, on topic... the laptop is clearly not for everyone. Desktop replacement laptops for me are a total waste of money. I'd rather spend a third of the price on an actual desktop. I do understand the attraction though. For me, I want a laptop with basic functionality, portability, and GREAT battery life. If the battery life is not exception, it's shiat as far as I'm concerned.

Acer sucks.

We got four identical laptops for our department, one died (needed new motherboard), then mine started making strange fan noises (had to replace MB, fan, KB and stuff, took 3 weeks to fix), then another one died (new MB), then mine died (new MB, TOOK 5 FRIGGIN WEEKS) and now number 3 starts making funny fan noises. One of them, though, works 100% perfectly well.

Keyboard is yucky, USB ports are underpowered.

Battery life is so-so.

Never again.

Ah come on, 5K$ isn't expensive... Thanks for trying, i'm aiming for 10000$ and more. :p

You obviously didn't play around with the system configurator.

Still, I maxxed out at $7,346, but that was without the T-Shirt option.

I've bought two desktop systems through them, one a Dual P2 system with a Quantum Obsidian Dual Voodo2 on one card SLI rig...that thing was rock solid...and fast.

I want their laptops because of the custom painting they do though...some of those paint schemes look awesome.

and...totally off topic...

Holy Crap!! Just checked out their top end desktop machine and they are putting together a machine with dual GeForce 7950's. That's QUAD GPU!!! Me want! Me Want!

I bought an Acer Aspire 3500 for an advertised $499, but I had to haggle with CompUSA for almost seven months over the rebate.

Finally I got pissed off and said, you either pay up, cancel the sale--or I'll see you in court. So they paid---and four days later my hard drive cratered. It cost $224 to fix, and I lost all my data.

And guess where my warranty information was? That's right, all scanned to perms of course, so I wouldn't lose it.

You figure they got some sort of radio signal they send out to fry your computer, when you force them to pay the rebates they owe? Sure seems like it.

The fact it has a full size keyboard makes that unit into love.

I've seen one, it was magnificent.

Those are beauties, aren't they? The Apple Store hereabouts had a PowerMac G5 with TWO of them hooked up. It was orgasmic.

Coffee. Through the nose, onto keyboard. Thanks, eddy, thanks a lot.

The problem with the 30" Cinema Displays is they need two connectors, and many computers only come with one. My G5 Dual Proc Tower only has one, would need a second video card for a 30". The 27" one I have is still pretty slick.

I almost want to get two 30" displays for my SLI Rig though :)

Acer laptops are terrible. Oh sure, they have a nice feature list for the cost but the quality is pitiful. Everybody in my family got one at Christmas time 2 years ago.

My mother had a USB port simply stop working and it will randomly turn off.

My father had the power connection die on his. It still works from battery but if you can't plug it in then obviously you can't charge the battery.

My brother had to replace a HD when the one that came with the machine died a month or two after the warrenty expired.

And then there was mine. HD started to die while it was still covered. I caled them up and got an RMA. The required I send in the whole laptop instead of just the drive. They sent it back and insisted it was just fine and that all it needed was a reformat due to some bad sectors. Never mind the fact that the bad sectors were ever increasing because the drive was about to die. A few weeks later (when it wasn't covered anymore) the drive completely died and made a lovely grinding sound whenever it spun up. So I replaced the drive. A few weeks after that the LCD died. The back light still worked but not the LCD. So I swaped it with the one from my dad's dead laptop. Then a few weeks after that the ethernet started being flakey and the optical drive would occasionally lose grip on the disc and you could hear it spin randomly. And now it won't power on at all.

My father had a second one. It has required at least 3 reformats due to completely random corruption of files on the HD.

Oddly enough my sister has had no problems with her laptop other than viruii and spyware which is her own fault.

So in less than 2.5 years out of 5 laptops only one still functions normally. That is an 80% failure rate. Absolutely pitiful.

27" monitor? or TV-Monitor?

The Cinema Display connects to a DVI port and, to my knowledge, all vid-cards that support the 30" come Dual DVI... granting the ability to do 2x30" at the same time almost inherently

May be a PC thing though =( Sorry... im only 1/5th apple

Typo...I meant the 23" Cinema Display. Blah.

I just got my Dell XPS M1710 and I love it!
I used to think like some of you that I would never get a laptop because you couldnt upgrade it. Well I had my last desktop for 4 years and the most upgrading I did was a stick of RAM. I wanted to upgrade more last year, but I would have had to replace my MB, and my RAM and CPU....Oh well I guess I could keep the case. Then I went to a LAN party and a friend came over with his laptop. While the rest of us were lugging our monitors and towers he was already setup and playing! After that I knew my upgrade had to be a laptop, and one that would handle the latest games! So I saved my pennies and it was worth it! I really wanted an Alienware but I get a discount from Dell through my work, so I got the XPS!

In the future, for all the talk, I don't imagine they will create a "flexible screen" worth a durn.

That being said, imagine how much fun it will be if (when) they make methanol fuel cells with enough chutzpah to run a laptop for an hour or two? The fun begins with people trying to bring pint bottles of methanol on board aircraft to feed their little digital alcoholic.

The way around it is for airlines to make deals with computer manufacturers, then provide advanced computers for rent to their passengers. The passengers would use thumb drives for the OS, software and data. The rental would easily pay for the computers.

Each computer would come with high-speed Internet, and the users could even remote access and use their own computer while flying.

Why are PC manufacturers still unable to produce a laptop that isn't 2" thick? Apple has a 17" laptop that is one inch thick, closed, and I'm sure if they made a 20" laptop it'd be the same.

Well, not very many people would stand for having to operate their laptop in the refridgerator to keep its innards from frying his leg and balls.

Seriously, look up all of the complaints of overheating Macbooks [and Pros], and the mooing ones as well.
That extra-small enclosure can't help with the heat dissipation.

This type of laptop is obviously not designed for people who need a laptop to fit on an airplane economy seat. It is a desktop replacement machine, designed for people who want the specifications of a desktop machine but either don't have room for one, or may need to move it from location to location occasionally. If you want true portability then this obviously isn't the machine for you.
