The display is a 20.1in, 1,680 x 1,050 job driven by an Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics chip with 256MB of dedicated video memory. The notebook has a couple of TV tuners inside too, one digital, the other analogue. There's a DVI-D port to hook the machine up to an HD TV - the notebook can pump out HDCP-protected content.

The machine is based on an Intel Core Duo processor, and provides 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a pair of SATA hard drives for up to 240GB of unformatted storage capacity. Its got FireWire, plenty of USB ports, a memory card reader and two PC Card slots. There's a 1.3-megapixel webcam in the screen housing too.

When you pack it full of goodies like that the size becomes understandable.

I thought the whole Idea behind a laptop was for it to be portable. Maybe im missing something but how is this thing even remotly portable. Then in order to use some of that stuff (is Tv tuners) it will need to be connected to the wall.

As soon as I can afford it I'll ditch my wimpy 17" HP!

maxkool: I thought the whole Idea behind a laptop was for it to be portable.

Some people need or desire larger work areas on their computers and wish to consolidate and not have a desktop cluttering up everything. These laptops are more movable desktop replacements instead of hyperportable computing stations. It makes sense to me.

2006-06-08 08:11:00 AM
For the last time, I want a portable that I can just throw in my bag and GO with no fear for its safety.

The Pismo PowerBook was the last fine example of that, IMO. This 12" PB is nice, but I have to put it in a sleeve to cushion the bumps. But then again, my Pismo also drinks Guinness with the best of them.

I hate that design.

The keyboard and touchpad are off to the left, so you can't sit directly in front of your PC.

If you're going to sit that far back and/or add an external keyboard and mouse...why have a laptop?

I used to have one of those HP laptops with a 17" screen and the numeric keypad. I could not stand it. What a dumb idea...made even dumber.

This reminds me of those "transportable" computers of the early 80's.

meh... Dell has had a 20" wide screen "notebook" with detachable keayboard for months already. Don't believe me? Check it out at their website under the XPS laptops.

Bob Down: bonus, a full size keyboard, as well.

I was thinking that too, but for all that wasted space on the console, they could have at least made the keyboard ergo.

Why are PC manufacturers still unable to produce a laptop that isn't 2" thick? Apple has a 17" laptop that is one inch thick, closed, and I'm sure if they made a 20" laptop it'd be the same. Why don't these PC companies put some money into R&D instead of repeatedly putting out these huge, clunky, 2" thick pieces of crap?

2006-06-08 08:21:48 AM
I could be interested in something like this, if the price tag isn't stupid.

I've gone to laptops for my computing needs, and 95% of the time they function like desktops, wired up to a normal CRT. The other 5% of the time they are "just portable enough" for me to haul on an airplane out to whichever coast I'm needed on without hassle. I don't use laptops to go down and work at Starbucks. I use them to quickly and easily re-locate my office.

If this thing could be tossed in a shoulder bag, or even a suitcase, it'd work for me.

2006-06-08 08:23:01 AM
love it... doing video is great on a bigger screen and PC's are just too much BS anymore.. fur me anyway.

In this case, a duffel bag might be needed.

Plus, everyone I know who's had an Acer has complained bitterly about battery life. Does this one come with its own car battery?

This isn't really a laptop but a portable desktop replacement. The old tower design is fading and we'll be seeing more systems like this.

2006-06-08 08:29:44 AM
Hmmm...I have a desktop at home with a nice big monitor. I have a USB drive.

I go to work and there, I have a nice big desktop with a nice big monitor. Oh! I've my USB drive there too! Or I've just e-mailed myself tons of stuff! Or I've moved it to the server! And amazingly, I've never had to unplug, disconnect, pack up, carry around, re-connect, re-charge, re-connect to the network, etc. etc.

I've never understood the laptop fetish.

Major Thomb This isn't really a laptop but a portable desktop replacement. The old tower design is fading and we'll be seeing more systems like this.

They can have my desktop when they pry it from my cold, dead atx hands.

I will not get a laptop until they allow me to easily swap out hard drives and disk drives without voiding the warranty. When I can easily upgrade the ram. When I can easily replace any one component without everything farking up. And most of all, when they can do that for the same price as I have on my desktop.

Then, they can have my computer.

They need to make laptops with pop out sleds for the components that hold standard generic laptop parts so you can easily upgrade without cracking the case. Most are still made where you need to open the case to get at some of the components or have a really good idea what little door to unscrew. Standard generic parts would make upgrading easier. But of course that would lose the cash cow of screwing the consumer for upgrades.
All laptops are made in about 3 factories in China, for the various computer manufacturers. The only thing unique is the chassis plastic.

As a not-so-proud owner of an Acer Laptop, I am willing to bet this thing gets absolutely no more than 10 minutes battery life if you have more than one program running.

And I'm not underexaggerating for the sake of humor.

I once took my acer, from over 24 hours of charging, to a friend's place, 15 miles away. It was hibernating on the car trip. Once I arrived, it turned on for one second before dying.

Unless they've made some kind of improvement, do NOT waste your money on Acer products. I love the way mine operates, love the screen, etc. -- but having a laptop with max 30 minutes battery life (being generous) in real world conditions is ridiculous.

// And no, the battery _isn't_ bad.

Shop around, you can already get laptops that allow you to do most of that, some all of it.

You lost me at Acer. Most poorly constructed laptops known to man. The place I work for purchased 30 Travel Mates for employees. Within two months not even 15 of them were functioning in house.

2006-06-08 08:54:45 AM
Yeah, the idea sounds cool but that requires me to buy an Acer.

Aye.

Bought many computers in me day; bought the Acer on a whim. I honestly have to say I was happier with a desktop I bought that wouldn't turn on. At least I knew it had the potential for good things if I fixed a few problems. :/

As a digital photographer with a 17" HP I look forward to more manufacturers jumping onboard the huge screen bandwagon. See for those of you bitaching who have no use for something like this, there are some of us who do have a use. Being able to toss a portable with 20" screen into a bag and heading for a shoot where I can firewire my camera straight to the laptop and be able to review the shots with my clients it FREAKIN FANTASTIC.

Best damn laptop I've ever had and still running strong after 2 years. Awesome battery life, feels solid as a bone, and all the ports are perfectly placed.

Are you a shill, Smite?

There's no way you could possibly like an Acer laptop.

Are you perhaps joking?

I have a huge laptop (HP 18 inch screen) that I take with me every day to law school.

For all you farkers asking why anyone would want a laptop this big:
1. I could only afford one computer and wanted something that would run sweet games.
2. Its nice to be able to play games while sitting reclined on my couch.
3. So when the other law students pull out their tiny lap tops I can laugh at them.

I'm using an ACER laptop, bought mainly because of price. I'm not a 'superuser' so it doesn't bother me that much. But the battery life SUCKS. That being said, I never travel with the damn thing, I mainly bought it so that I wouldn't be cluttering up my (rather tiny) apartment with a desktop. So it works for me, I doubt I'll have it more than another couple of years though.

2006-06-08 09:09:00 AM
wtf? 20.1" to get 1680x1050 resolution? I just ordered a 15.4" dell laptop with 1680x1050 resolution. If I'm lugging around a 20" screen shouldnt I at least get 1920x1200 resolution?

2006-06-08 09:14:28 AM
if the screen was any bigger, it would be the same size of the screen the planes used to have, when they still showed movies

Asking why every notebook manufacturer doesn't research and build 1 inch thick notebooks exclusively like Apple is kinda like asking Honda why they build a 23K$ civic that isn't a ferrari. (although, by my logic you should be able to slap an ill pipe onto your Dell laptop's exhaust port and say with delusional passion 'it's totally, totally one inch thick... I don't know why anyone would pay for an Apple. It's champ.')

I'm with Smite. I work with Acer laptops all the time, average battery life is around 2 hours, screens are nice and bright, etc. No problems.

I am another happy Acer user. Shock and awe! I have a TravelMate 8200 and it works absolutely fine. I am aware that it is a pretty big crapshoot with my model at least, however, but that seems to be the case with most laptop manufacturers these days.

2006-06-08 09:18:00 AM
I heard somebody mention a 20 inch screen earlier. Is this the same thing, or a poor attempt at one-upsmanship?

Why don't these PC companies put some money into R&D instead of repeatedly putting out these huge, clunky, 2" thick pieces of crap?

Apple makes about 30% profit on each machine you buy. With that extra money, they design their hardware and OS and the other goodies you get with the machine.

Acer, Dell, Gateway, et al make (last time I heard) about 5% profit on each machine. They don't do OS research, and they generally buy components from other manufacturers, put them in a box, and provide tech support for them.

So to design computers that look like Macs, they'll need to be priced the similarly.
