It was a ceremony, and in ceremonies there are rules. Complain about it all you like, but it has always been this way, and it always will.

The example above about the 4-hour graduation ceremony, where most parents couldn't hear their kids names because someone else's kid was doing the Robot all up and down the stage, is why they have a policy.

She knew the policy, she broke the policy, she was asked to leave.

That's life, get a helmet.

Take the dirtbag cop off the street so s/he can write a statement or appear in court to prosecute you. If you just send in the fine money, the cops and judges aren't impacted and they just pocket your money for nothing!

Just for the record, cops love traffic court. Gets them overtime, which is big money.

2006-06-06 04:07:09 PM
At least I made the legal system work a bit for my money. And everyone else who gets a ticket should fight it, too. Take the dirtbag cop off the street so s/he can write a statement or appear in court to prosecute you. If you just send in the fine money, the cops and judges aren't impacted and they just pocket your money for nothing!

And the flip side to that argument is that while everyone is busy fighting traffic tickets in court, cops are pulled off the streets so they can be in court, the legal system is strained for time and resources, and ultimately everyone suffers from those things far more than anyone benefits from your "pocketed" fine.

When you get a ticket, ask yourself this. Are you guilty of what you're being charged for doing? Yes or no. Did you speed, make an illegal turn, whatever. Yes or no. If you are, don't fight the ticket just because you know a loophole. Pay the damn ticket, consider it a true-up for all the times you were speeding and didn't get a ticket, and move on with your life.

And if you have a real problem with the ticket, again, ask yourself how many other times you got away with it, and whether you think you might owe a hundred bucks for speeding three dozen times in the past year.

I am so glad my public Highschool not only had competent administrators, they had administrators with a sense of humor.

For instance, at the end of highschool last year, my younger brother and his friend were supremely bored. After all, it was the lead up to the final exams, which, in NC, are mostly standardized (And, therefore, almost pathetically easy). So, he and his friend decided to dress up differently each day.

The first day was ninjas. Classic, cliche, but fun.

Later, they went as Greek Gods.

One day, they went as fairys . Yes, fairys, because they thought it would be amusing. They went to some of their female friends and borrowed nylon tutu's and spaghetti straps, and then purchsed some fake fairy wings. They went to school like this.

My principal's response? He pointed out that spaghetti straps violated the dress code, and that, because it had to be enforced fairly, they had to put on shirts with sleeves.

That's it.

Didn't send them home, didn't try to get them arrested for causing a disturbance (Not even this year, when, as the senior prank, he procured 2006 bouncy-balls to be dropped of the balcony and into the cafeteria). Just (somewhat jokingly) pointed out that the dress-code had to be applied fairly, and so they had to put on shirts.

you just ended a sentence with NOT... This just goes to prove my preconceived notion that people from the South have little in the way of intelligence.

Nothing says stupid faster than a southern accent.

the real question is:

why are ceremonies so damn pretentious/full of it/long? and why do they have to play that music for all 5 hours of it?

2006-06-06 04:11:25 PM
Nobody has any soul anymore, apparently.

Ah, well.

fishrockcarving, if Texas really doesn't care about the rest of the nation, why don't y'all secede? IIRC, you're the only state that's allowed to...

/Oh, right. Welfare checks from the rest of us that do actual work.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like she was acting like an idiot - you hafta have a little bit of ceremony to these things or it'll turn into a free for all, which defeats the whole frigging point of the thing, no (Graduation Ceremony')?

P.S. Destrip - just because some laws are enforced unfairly doesn't mean there should be no laws. Although I do agree with you about overzealous traffic cops being a pain in the rear bumper.

"students who raise their hands above their waists for any reasons other than receiving the diplomas or shaking hands may be removed from the graduation ceremony."

In contrast, Austin ISD had never called anyone out for break dancing, or throwing handfuls of gold glitter at my graduation. The only cardinal sin was taking up too damn much of everyone else's time trying to do "the worm" as you cross the stage.

"She had been in danger of not graduating after she failed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge, or TAKS test, three times."

Ho-ly-crap. That's just pathetic. The test isn't hard, and it's just a moderately re-vamped version of the TAAS test they've been giving for decades. Fourth time's a charm I guess....

So did you, and you began it without a capital letter. Also, keeping in mind that it has been a while since I picked up an MLA book, I don't think that is the proper usage of ellipsis.

blah blah blah.. "I hate Texas" blah blah blah "Dumb administrators" etc. Geez, people. Maybe there was some history behind these rules. Maybe a kid brought a gun last year... or maybe some kids were going crazy in line and distracting the entire event and causing so much noise that other parents couldn't hear there kids' names being called...maybe she tried to flash everybody. My point is, we don't know both sides...of the story.
/i love ellipses...

Oh no! Someone did something wrong once! Quick, lets make another rule, that will fix it!

No. People with a southern accent are instantly labeled as stupid in my mind until they prove otherwise. I don't know why that is, but it is 100% accurate.

2006-06-06 04:23:18 PM
But her mother said that she is "determined to do something about this."

Should have done something 18 years earlier.

It wasn't about grammar, it was about how stupid people who say something to the effect of 'I think you're really cool... NOT!' Feel free to pick on my grammar, it isn't something I've ever been that good at or care about.

Am I the only one who feels good about his K-12 (Texas) public education? I loved my teachers, got along great with the administrators, graduation went smoothly without idiotic rules...

Granted, being in the gifted/talented classes is a whole different ballgame than being mixed in with the average kids... the non-honors classes I had to take ("Advanced Academic Strategies", wtf) were frightening

My public education was great. Granted though, there are good public schools and bad. For example, I started High School in the middle of redistricting, and had to choose between two schools. I decided to attend the one that didn't need a sign stating it was "a drug and weapon free zone" every 30 feet.

2006-06-06 04:37:31 PM
why am i thinking that principals and such of public schools seem like bitter disgruntaled failed buisness managers or failed law?

2006-06-06 04:38:24 PM
I think it's funny. A graduation ceremony is supposed to be formal. She was whoop-whooping it up, being an ass and an attention whore. I'd have been one of the people applauding to see her removed from the line.

2006-06-06 04:38:59 PM
She had been in danger of not graduating after she failed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge, or TAKS test, three times.

The school district handbook also states that "students who raise their hands above their waists for any reasons other than receiving the diplomas or shaking hands may be removed from the graduation ceremony."

But her mother said that she is "determined to do something about this."

Maybe Mom should teach her how to Farking read.

I thought all schools did this. Granted, mine did not have specific rules this. They basically just said "do something...anything...we don't like and you don't get your diploma."

Mr. Anon

i failed the english section of the TAKS for disagreeing with the prompt. i think it was something like "write an essay about why heritage is important." i don't know how anyone could fail the test 3 times. the funny thing is that the TAKS is harder than the GED.

For the actions of kicking her out, we need to cut Alaska in half and make Texas the THIRD largest state. That'll teach them about stupid rules. . .

Texas demands certain appropriate behaviors at the appropriate times. Texas could care less what the rest of this PC nation believes or thinks. In Texas...we know that all the rest of this country is simply collateral lands. God bless Texas.

2006-06-06 04:50:56 PM
No raising you hands above the waist? Is that to flesh out the Kleibolds and Harris’s in the crowd? School seems so interesting and free today, must be why all the kids are popping the happy pharms.

2006-06-06 04:53:22 PM

Most likely they went from Government school to Government college to Government teaching job. Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, "administrate".

"She was not acting like she was instructed to."

Apparently, we're doing a great job of educating free-thinking people in this society...wait...

My point is that all these administrative types around our country are super-obsessed with "acting like instructed" as if none of us, be we 28 or 18, are capable of thinking for ourselves.

The "do as we tell you to do and don't think" mentality in America is getting out of control.

The reason this crap happens is school is because of overly litigious parents that whine and cry and sue every time little cody sees, hears, or does something objectionable. From a liability purpose its far better to just have strict rules and cover your ass.

Ditto: That is because you are a bigot. Bigots are idiots. Therefore...

Its too bad that there are but a few people in my life that are intelligent and have a southern accent. The vast majority that I've met have shown little to no intelligence.

I'm sorry if this offends you. Also, this is a little different because it is a perception based on an action. You weren't born with a southern accent, you aquired it from your parents. Its discrimination based on your actions and what you have made of yourself, and that isn't bigotry.

I know I am not alone, not by a long shot on this. Hell Stephen Colber said in an interview that one of the first things he did was lose his southern accent because it was shorthand for stupid. If you have a southern accent and don't want to be perceived as stupid you have 2 options, 1 show me your not, 2 lose the accent. Don't tell me you can't lose it. I worked and got rid of my minnesota accent that I was teased mercilessly about whenever I visited my reliatives in California.

2006-06-06 05:08:58 PM
Mr. Anon

So Its okay to say that poor people are stupid. There are some poor people I have met that are intelligent, but the vast majority that I've met have shown little to no intelligence.

Its just a perception based on action after all. You weren't born poor, you acquired that status from your parents.

Same thing right?

2006-06-06 05:09:01 PM
Mr. Anon: Hell Stephen Colber said in an interview that one of the first things he did was lose his southern accent because it was shorthand for stupid.

If you base your life around him you have much bigger problems than this.

Like reading, or in our case, being Southern rubes, sounding out phrases.
