But her mother said that she is "determined to do something about this.

Good to see her showing interest in her daughters activities.

I hope they all feel better after the lawsuit.

Same thing happened in Texas to me in 1991. My twin sister graduated right ahead of me and I jumped up and down. They gave me a blank diploma. I had to go to the school a week later and pick it it. The principal told me I was "inapproprately exuberant". I took my diploma and called her a coont.

2006-06-06 01:21:30 PM
Dammit...pick it UP.

I think i'd have sued him into oblivion.

....inappropriately exuberant

and then the market crashed.

Legalize It: and then the market crashed.

BWAHAHAHA!

biatch knew the rules and violated them. It will prepare her well to learn from her mistakes. If she ever wants a place in line for MuppetPastor's biatch-o-the-week, she's gonna need to learn what she can (make her mouth useful when it's open, make me a sammich) and can't (speak unless spoken to, wear clothes) do. Its just a life lesson, honey.

I'm hoping that was sarcasm.

"She was waving. She was not acting like she was instructed to."

Zere vill be no TALKING
Zere vill be no SMILING
You vill obay ALL of the ORDERS we give you
Do you understand?

Its just a final reminder that all the reading they did, about society, higher learning, questions about a persons role in society, values and exploration of human nature are all just questions on the TASP test.

Now, go drink through 4 years of college and then report to your cubicle.

I never understood this shiat. WTF is wrong with letting the kid be happy? Graduation is the biggest day most people will have other than their wedding. Let them wave their arms. Hell when I got out of high school I celebrated by leaving ten thousand miles of rubber in the parking lot.

2006-06-06 01:41:14 PM
Of course she should have been kicked out; hell, if it were up to me, she wouldn't get a diploma at all until she attended eight more weeks of summer school. We can't have people expressing any kind of emotion at a major point in their lives. That would be completely against the American primary and secondary education system's goal, which is to make American children into good little consumer automatons who don't think critically and who never, ever question what their leaders tell them.

2006-06-06 01:42:04 PM
Unfarking believable. What kind of pseudo fascist crap passes for education down there? Honestly it strains imagination.

2006-06-06 01:42:36 PM
Yeah, because waving at your friends is what's wrong with our schools. Good job, assholes. Bush is pleased.

2006-06-06 01:42:44 PM
"She was twirling in the line," said Northside ISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez. "She was waving. She was not acting like she was instructed to." Gonzalez said that Samantha will eventually receive her diploma.

She added, "I've been an educator for years, and in that time, I've seen a lot of bad eggs. I say 'eggs' because at the high school level we are not dealing with fully-developed individuals. I see a bad egg when I look at your niece. She is a twiddler, a dreamer, a silly heart
and she is a jabberbox. And, frankly, I don't think she takes a thing in her life or her career as a student seriously."

Public schools, prison system....same thing these days. Although I think the prison degree is actually worth something now.

It's not limited to 'down there'. You hear stories like this from all over the country.

Public high school in Texas was basically daycare for teenagers. I farking hated it. From what I've heard, it's like lockdown now. I'm glad I graduated when I did.

I guess they want the kids reactions to graduating to reflect the quality of the education they have received. In other words, non-existent.

2006-06-06 01:48:46 PM
this goes on my list of "reasons to never visit texas" as reason number 476

the list growns daily

/damn the fact that houston is such a major flight hub.

2006-06-06 01:49:07 PM
Two sides to every story.

The school MIGHT be wrong, but from what THEY are saying, she was hopping around, waving at everybody and generally acting like an ass (relative to the other students, that is).

I'm guessing she was probably somewhere between the two descriptions given. Reason to kick her out? Perhaps - they do know the rules. I'm sure she could have twirled, shouted, jumped, raised the roof, high fived and tossed her cap - AFTER she got her diploma.

Weaver95: Public schools, prison system

Call me a tin-foil hat wearer, but I really do wonder if the schools are becoming just that. Preparation for the future police state. You know with mandatory community service as a part of release, erm graduation, the whole idea of groupthink being mandated, the utter propaganda being taught like just say no classes, and of course the metal detectors and lockdown mentality they have anymore. This shows even in the grade schools where the playground is more like a prison yard with nothing fun for a little kid to do. If I ever have kids, I'll homeschool them. At least then they'll be allowed to have recess with a swingset.

And then I said, "But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're all good kids until dried-out braindead scags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. You so much as scowl at my niece or any other kid in this school and I hear about it, I'm comin' lookin' for you. Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat knaw that thing off your face. Good day to you madam."

eddyatwork

yes. you are absolutly correct. There is not education in school anymore. 8 out of 10 kids that graduate high school cant do basic algebra, cant name the first 5 presidents and cant speak english any better than a goddamn frenchman.

Instead our hard earned tax dollars are paying to babysit kids, make sure they are "freak dancing" or smoking cigarettes behind the school...and trying to educate them morally as opposed to intelectually.

and it is working...its true that a dumb populace is easier to control.

2006-06-06 01:59:35 PM
Samantha said she pumped her hands in the air because she was proud of herself. She had been in danger of not graduating after she failed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge, or TAKS test, three times. The test is a requirement by the Texas Education Agency for graduation from high school.

While I do think this is heavy handed, I can't muster too much outrage on behalf of an idiot.

2006-06-06 02:00:57 PM
You know, I've heard a lot of stupid shiat in my life. A lot of stupid shiat. You wouldn't believe some of the stupid shiat I've heard.

This, right here, might seriously be, like, the second- or third-stupidest shiat I have ever heard.

It is now one of my life's goals to someday travel to Texas, evacuate my bowels, put a dunce cap on it, and take a picture, so I can show it around and say, "See this? Believe it or not, there is actually shiat in Texas stupider than this."

All I know is that if any kid today tried pulling even HALF the shiat I did when I was in school they'd be looking at a jail term. I remember one memorably incident in a computer class that would have earned me a vist from Homeland Security these days.

God, I hate San Antonio. Biggest one horse town in Texas.

Seems like a lot of students are being banned from graduations for making seemingly pointless reasons.

Adminstrators are more concerned with following The Rules than anything else. The Rules are more important. Do not violate The Rules (unless you're an adminstrator of course).

2006-06-06 02:05:11 PM
Don't wave your hands in the air like you just don't care. Because they care. Oh, they care very much about that sort of thing. And when they're done with you, you'll care too.

This is why Texas needs a tag.

It is the last chance the beaten down high school administrator has to subject the student to their superiority.

San Antonio is a complete toilet, BTW.

"She was twirling in the line," said Northside ISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez. "She was waving. She was not acting like she was instructed to."

The mother should've replied:

"I don't think I want to know an 18-year-old who isn't a dreamer, or a sillyheart. And I sure don't want to know one who takes their student career seriously. I don't have a college degree. I don't even have a job. But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're ALL good kids, until dried-out, brain-dead skags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. That's so much BS. I remember how proud of myself I was at my graduation. I couldn't stop pumping my hands in the air. I was like, "pump! pump! pump!"

Ah, but we were good kids though.

The school district handbook also states that "students who raise their hands above their waists for any reasons other than receiving the diplomas or shaking hands may be removed from the graduation ceremony."

If my school'd had this rule, the homecoming queen would have had no defense against my groping. By the way, I am familiar with the knee in the groin defense.
Aren't the graduates supposed to move the tassel from one side of their hat to the other after they get their diplomas?

Can someone post the John-Lithgow-at-the-podium pic please?
