He's a for 1. turning away perfectly good business from non-English speakers and 2. scaring away more business from people who know English but aren't confident speakers yet.

One big difference is my ancestors didn't come here illegaly, refuse to assimilate, hold protests waving flags from the country they left and claim that they had the power to shut down the economy by boycotting a workday (That worked out well for them). The old saying "When in Rome, do as the romans do" holds true just about everywhere you go. Why should this country be any different?

I've been to both Pat's and Geno's, and I have to say, Capriotti's makes a better cheesesteak. Of course, you can't get whiz on it (that sounds disgusting...) but BFD. Their meat is better (vaguely sexual).

A restaurant owner can refuse service to someone for any stupid reason he wants. He can refuse service to you if he doen't like your shirt.

Sounds good to me, keep the line moving, got plenty of business already without someone trying to order a cheesesteak in Russian.

It's also stupid because it's difficult for foreign tourists - and let's face it, Americans are RENOWNED for not learning the language of the countries we visit.

English? Americans don't speak English...ask the English. The most common tongue in the Americas is Spanish.

1. How do you (or the business owner) know that the non-English-speaking customers are here illegaly?

2. Studies have shown that recent immigrants from Latin America learn English and assimilate faster than did the non-English-speaking European immigrants from the early 1900s.

Good on em, if he wants customers to speak english, thats his perogative. If he loses business, oh well, maybe he'll make up for the loss from non english speakers by getting more business from english speaking americans who agree with his views. Well if you go to a place where people only speak English, that's the policy by default. If you came to any of the places I worked in highschool (a CVS, a McDonald's, and a Publix), you wouldn't exactly be refused service, but you wouldn't get much help from me either. Sorry folks, but this day in age (to all you "their ancestors blah blah" posters) we have plenty of programs in place for immigrants to learn at least basic, life-sustaining English.

Good. We need more companies that are willing to demand that their customers speak english or go away.

I know you may think I'm racist for this, but here's one reason why I'm saying this:

Right now I'm in Dallas Texas working for a home health service company. Texas has plenty of people who refuse to speak english, they demand that everything be done in spanish, and we have customers who demand the same thing. Last week we angered an illegal alien because we had her speak english because very few people in the office speak spanish. For the next few weeks we're having to keep a call log of english vs spanish callers, and if there are enough spanish callers I could very well be out of a job so the company can cater to these farking bastards who don't want to learn the language.

Thing is, I don't blame the company. The clients all receive funding through the state for our services and since it's through the state we can't turn down these clients.

For those of you who are calling this racism and bigotry or what have you, then I hope you also have to spend a couple weeks conducting a survey for your company to see if you need to be fired and replaced with someone who can talk to people who don't speak the language.

I don't mind being fired for something that I did or didn't do. But being fired so the company can't be sued for discriminating against illegal aliens is assinine.

Learn English. My mother had to learn English. It only makes sense. For this to be the "melting pot" people must communicate. And to do that there has to be a standard. Assimilation into the country you move to is a good thing, whether you move to Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Iran or the US. Learn the local language and customs and get into their culture and you can still preserve your own. (At least you can in the US)

I'm part Italian, grew up not far from Philly and my last name begins Geno, so I feel obliged to tell the restaurant owner to

I know I'd laugh my ass off if his neighborhood grew to be primarily Spanish speaking and he went out of business because of his stupid policy.

I have no problem with this concerning immigrants, but to strictly uphold it when it comes to tourists is just stupid.
