No, it's the one people say they like more, because the one with wonderwall was too popular (ie. "sold out").

It's all 12 year old girls voting on t he internet. Not exactly a cross-section of the musically appreciative public.

2006-06-02 03:28:07 AM
If it was a 12 year old girl poll something by Westlife or McFly would be top. And Sgt Pepper blows - hasn't stood the test of time. Revolver is where it's at.

It's called Mr. Kite, and it's illegal.

This list is as much of a joke as all the others in recent memory. Pay it no mind.

Proof that meth & oxycontin have reached the
green & pleasant shores of Blighty.

Any band that claims to be better than the
Beatles cannot possibly be, since such a claim
is simply a terrible attempt to overcompensate
for their own innate inferiority complex.

And its the mark of the truly untalented
asshat, such as your Terrence Trent-D'Arbys
or your Milli Vanillis

If only a band claiming that they are more popular than the Beatles would have the same effect on their carrers as the Beatles claiming they were "More popular than Jesus".

/and yes, I know it was just John who said it
//Beatles rip-off never = better than Beatles
///Ok, so it wasn't Oasis themselves who said their album was better. But do you really think those two haven't thought it in their drugged out little heads?

The Brits are fickle when it comes to music. They jump on the bandwagon of every new fad that comes along but they're only right about 10% of the time.

That's why an asshat like Robbie Williams can sell millions of records in the UK and not even get arrested here.

2006-06-02 09:13:03 AM
Well I personally think it's a great record. Revolver is better though.

2006-06-02 09:16:26 AM
1) Radiohead - OK Computer
2) My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

My top two discs of all time and I'll never own a Oasis album.

Is that like when these Bozos voted The Stone Roses the best album of all time? In MOJO, my favorite magazine!!!!!!

/likes Oasis A LOT just doesn't agree

It is a pretty good album, though. But I don't really like the Beatles.

I thought it was impossible on fark to discuss british music without freaking out about Pete Doherty.

/Beatles are thumbsdown, because of John Lennon, who wrote and recorded the worst song ever released.

They're both wrong. The best album ever is Paul's Boutique.

2006-06-02 09:51:25 AM
First off, we can all agree that Oasis "Definitely Maybe" is no where near the top album of all time.

Second, Revolver is by far the best Beatles album of all time.

Third, glad to see OK Computer so high. Still listen to that one.

2006-06-02 10:03:09 AM
They're both wrong. The best album ever is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

2006-06-02 10:26:58 AM
1. The worst Beatle ouvre is far better than anything that Oasis ever recorded. End of that story.

2. In other news, the Samples are probably the best band never to be catapulted into football-stadium-headlining superstardom. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

2006-06-02 10:29:32 AM
So this is where my opinion is better than yours? Hurray!

1. Led Zeppelin - IV
2. Radiohead - Ok Computer
3. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
4. Michael Jackson - Thriller

I posted this in one of the discussions for the 13243843 links submitted for this story but since this is the one that got greenlit, I'm gonna repost it here for the general public:

I've always likened Oasis in the UK to the Tragically Hip here in Canada. Phenominal success inside their respective countries, but little impact anywhere else. So when stuff like this comes out, a greatest album poll based out of one particular country, it makes people in every other country scratch their collective heads about what all the hype is about.

There was a very good article written about them not too long ago that I highly recommend everyone read (you can read that HERE.) Here's a quote from the article:

"Do some Oasis songs remind you of Beatles songs? Absolutely. But guess what? Oasis is a British group that plays hard-driving, melodic rock and roll. There are going to be similarities, to the Beatles, to the Who, to T-Rex, to countless others."

and another,

"Listen to Rock 'n' Roll Star, or The Hindu Times, or Lyla, the single from the new CD. The Beatles never sounded like that, folks. Listen to everything Oasis has to offer, rather than picking and choosing certain songs to prove some point about how derivative the band is."

I'm a fan of Oasis myself and it's always felt like they've been undercut by terrible stereotypes (Beatles rip-offs! Liam is an ass 24/7! All the brothers do is fight!) and it's a bit annoying to read time and time again when people just swallow the accepted rhetoric and repeat it blindly and don't bother to actually try and find anything out for themselves.

That said, Definitely Maybe certainly is NOT the greatest album of all time, and honestly how can that even be determined when music is an individual taste to begin with? Definitely Maybe is widely accepted as a landmark album in Britpop history and has its place in the 90s as a defining album for a particular generation.

The trouble is that since Oasis achieved that recognition with their FIRST album, no album after it can possibly ever match its aura and so Oasis is doomed to the reputation of a band that either:

a) tries too hard to recapture the mood of the 'glory days' when that's just not possible considering how things inevitably change in 12 years, and thus people write them off

or,

b) tries to move away from that era and get on with some quality tunes that move in a new sonic direction but then are blasted for not writing the fist-pumping anthems that made them famous in the 90s, and thus people write them off

This is clearly a case of the Beatles vote getting split. Having 2 of the three top spots (Number 2 and 3 are Sgt. Pepper and Revolver) obviously shows that people like the Beatles more, but just can't decide which great album was the greatest. If they were asked "Oasis" or "Beatles" straight up, it would clearly be Beatles.

I have nothing against Oasis, but they aren't the Beatles.

I definitely agree that nobody can top what the Beatles have done for music, but to be fair, Oasis did also land #5 with the album everybody knows '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' so your vote-splitting theory also applies to Oasis since both bands got 2 out of the top 5.

Clearly I'm not saying Oasis is anywhere as important as the Beatles were to music history, but then again, anyone who is reading too deeply into what 40,000 Brits consider the best album of all time has a problem to begin with.

All the people right here, right now,
Today is gonna be the day,
That we're going to throw it back at you.
You know what I mean?
We just noticed all the chords in your songs,
Yeah, yeah...
Are the same, did you?

All the people right here, right now,
I don't believe that anybody,
Could get away with this,
You know what I mean?
But you have... well, you did...
Yeah, yeah...
Didn't ya?

And all the catchy melodies are winding,
Around the same progression, and we're finding,
That you released three singles,
But you could have managed one!
Good luck to you.

1. The Zombies - "Odessey and Oracle"
2. Neutral Milk Hotel - "In an Airplane Under the Sea"
3. XTC - "Skylarking"
4. The Beatles - "Revolver"
5. The Shins - "Oh, Inverted World"
6. The Go-Betweens - "Springhill Fair"
7. Belle and Sebastian - "If You're Feeling Sinister"
8. Guided by Voices - "Under the Bushes Under the Stars"
9. The Who - "Who's Next"
10. REM - "Murmer"

The best album ever is In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

A fine album, I'll agree. Certainly one of the modern classics. I'll also put The Afghan Whigs 'Gentlemen' on my list. I think you also have to add the Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' to that list.

As far as the Beatles, they were geniuses, but even geniuses can be overplayed by radio by large, and that is why I tend to discount their output.

9. The Who - "Who's Next"
10. REM - "Murmer"

(And I have 7 of the 10 other choices at work here with me.)

Love your 9 & 10 choices, fancyjamtime. Both those recordings are near sacred to me.

BTW, "Under the Bushes Under the Stars" over "Bee Thousand"? Interesting choice.....

It was the first GBV album I picked up...I got it the day it came out on the advice of a fellow Kinks fan. I am addicted to Pollard and UTBUTS was my gateway drug. What can I say?

fjt, have you ever heard the Local H cover of GBV's 'Smothered in Hugs' from "Bee Thousand"? I picked up the 'Slingblade' soundtrack and it happened to be on the disc, apparently Billy Bob Thorton is fan of both.

It is just an awesome single if you like the GBV....fwiw

Considering it probably didn't get much airplay in Britain, I'll accept the fact that the Brits failed to properly recognize "Reign in Blood" by Slayer as the best album of all time.
