It's more stupid to allow the United States to occupy your country. We've seen the results in Iraq and Afghanistan already. Nothing but more death, looting, chaos, and misery.

I really don't think you are grasping this here. In a direct confrontation with the United States, the Iranian forces won't have a chance (see Iraq in 1991). Their best bet, the strategy they will use in the event of invasion (you have been following the rhetoric haven't you?) will be to let the Americans in, drawing them deeper into Iran where the American supply lines will stretch, where they're numbers grow increasingly thin, and where the terrain is much harsher.

Iran will use irregulars, guerilla fighters (see Pasdaran), to harrass the American rear area and ravage the supply lines. This in turn would either force the United States to divert forces from its main effort to secure the rear or pull back altogether. Either way, the pressure at the front would lessen and the advance would slow...all without confronting the tip of the spear (and like any good spear, if you hack at and break the shaft the entire thing is useless).

I'm not sure how hard that is to grasp. Its basic military strategy. You don't hit the enemy where they are strongest, where your forces will be at a gross disadvantage. You hit where they are weak and where they are few.

Going all out to stop them at the border and urging the civilians to take up arms in a futile effort to slow the absolute strongest part of the American force is the dumbest and costliest strategy they could undertake.

Again, I don't think you are thinking about this very clearly. You are responding with emotional outbursts about how they will sacrifice themselves for every inch of ground and shed gallons of blood for every foot of dirt.

Has Iran? No. If you actually read the things they say... they say the state of Israel will collapse because it is fundamentally unjust. They are not directly threatening it. But this gets warped and translated into "We're going to kill the Jews!" in the American media. Remember that fake story about Jews wearing gold stars?

Have they been trying to at least negotiate a solution to their disputes with their neighbors (both internal and external)?

Like the Infitada in Israel right? Or like when images of that girl being run over by a bulldozer right?

No, farking hell won't break loose.

Telling your people to sacrifice themselves in the hope that public opinion will swing their way, and thus spur on international efforts to aid them, is idiotic because you rely entirely on other nations to come to your aid. Victory rests entirely in the hands of others.

The strategy I briefly outlined above is one that the Iranians can accomplish on their own using their own strengths and neutralizing the strengths of the United States. That, is the route they will take. Iranians haven't been big on relying on anyone but themselves since the Revolution in 1979 and the years of ensuing isolation. I don't think they'd change their ways now.

Groups like Al-Queda turn on the hand that feeds them as often as they attack the enemy they're supposed to.

If that were true, they would be unable to find funding.

Sorry, we can't kill tens of thousands of people because somebody MIGHT someday do SOMETHING.

We would, I hope, act on intelligence that takes MIGHT out of the equation.

Finally, talk is heating up a little more about war with Iran. That little skirmish in Iraq is getting soooooo boring. If the liberals were in office, they would never have the balls to start a war.

Sure, but they're much much better at diplomacy and propaganda than Bush is. Probably because the things they are saying are, fundamentally, true. Of course the leadership of Iran will use the dead civilians as a political tool in the international community. And the Sunni-Shiite divide will be meaningless when the Muslims start believing that it's a war on their way of life, not just a few rogue states.

Oh, you missed it?

Tell 'em again, Mantari

I wish the news was making more light of how ridiculous and unreasonable the US position is. Let me reword it:
GIVE US EVERYTHING WE WANT BEFORE WE SIT DOWN AT THE NEGOTATING TABLE.

Uhhh... aren't you supposed to sit down at the negotiating table first, then try to get what you want? What is the point of Iran sitting down with the US for talks if they've already given in on the US's main demand? Silly!

This is just an obvious excuse so Bush can later summarize and say, "They refused to negotiate with us, so we were forced to go to the UN Security Council, and then they authorized.... so we..."

STUPID! STUPID! STUPID! Are we really falling for this pile of PR crap? ..............AGAIN! I fixed this last part!

There now, ....wasn't it soooo much better when all you had to get your knickers in a wad about was poking fun at Condecyndi Rice?

Also wanted to point out the utter futility in following such a course of action, and relying on public opinion to stop a conflict, when dealing with a leader who has been remarkably resistant to things like public opinion, negative media exposure, and world opinion in general (how many people protested against invading Iraq?).

Of course Bush doesn't care about international opinion. But the Muslims states are going to go into full-scale jihad if Bush uses nuclear weapons against Iran. Who really thinks Bush is going to stop at Iran? There's always Lebanon and Syria and Libya and Egypt and Palestine to invade! This is, absolutely, a war on Islamic culture, and they're not going to accept it any more.

What's hard to guess is how China, Europe, and Russia will respond. Will they actually band together and fight America? That could get very ugly very fast. But I doubt they're going to stand back and let Bush ruin their economies as well.

Just to point out, you might want to work on your terminology there. In the first line you say that the Iranians are very good at propaganda. Then you tell me that it is probably because it is true. Which, due to the negative connotations attached to propaganda, seems to dilute your overall point.

Jimmy Carter had the Camp David Accords

Just because you host the party doesn't mean the party-goers wont find a place to party. Anwar Sadat was looking for some solution with Menachem Begin before Camp David. Carter was important, but it would have happened with or without him.

Bush is a disappointment, and I am not about to defend him, but his administration is hardly the most corrupt or incompetent. He will be gone soon enough, and perhaps then you will see something change with the way the country is run.

Still, it was wrong of me to sidetrack the threat. Let me get us back on track.

Sunburn missiles. I hope the Russians get around to getting those anti-aircraft missile batteries into Tehran ASAP.

Well, I'm glad that you are hoping that there will be missles to shoot down American planes before they get there. Tell the ROTC kid from your school who has a flight contract that.

But think about it. We screwed over the Russians in Afghanistan by selling people like Bin Laden the latest in US military hardware.

We screwed the Russians, huh? No kidding, them being USSR at that time and all. Its good thing you pointed that out, because I always thought that USA and USSR were the best of buddies.

Aside from that, its also good to keep in mind that anything the Russians sell to Iranians can be potentially used on them in Chechniya.

Don't you think Putin, an old hard-line KGB officer, is thinking back to the friends he lost in Afghanistan and wondering how to turn an attack on Iran into a colossal embarassment for the United States? The Russians have long memories.

Do you have some inside info on Putin losing close friends in Afghanistan, and about his lust for revenge? Do you have a mole in Kremlin or are you telepathic?

No that's not hard to guess at all. Russia and China will probably take the opportunity to sell Iran arms at outrageous prices. They will make no open effort to fight the United States due to economic considerations. Europe, while disapproving mightily, will not be willing to sink their relationship with the United States over Iran so they will probably work on the sidelines for a diplomatic solution...and thus stay neutral.

I'm sorry. Just because the invader is from my own country does not obligate me to support them, or their mission.

Not a value judgment. I don't think the USSR had any more right to fark around in Afghanistan than the USA. I'm no hypocrite.

It just stands to reason. He definately hasn't forgotten the Russian soldiers that died from Afghans firing American weapons.

Hard to imagine us invading Egypt or Libya. Egypt is an ally, and Libya is fast on the way to becoming one also. Palestine? WHy involve ourselves there? That is for Israel to deal with. This is not a war on Islamic culture as a whole. This is a war against those factions that assume Islam is about bombing the infidels or killing someone that says something bad about your religion. If, however, that is a belief of every Msulim, then I have no problem wagin a war on that culture. I'll tell you how Europe, China, and Russia will react. Not in concert with each other. The chinese and russians hate each other. Europe? No, they haven't the balls to fight us. Nor should they. If we are trying to remove those from power that would use oil as a weapon, why fight us? If they can get guarantees on the flow of oil post invasion, they would join in the fight.

After reading your previous replies, and those of the people debating this with you, I decided it'd be easier to just get to the point. But, for some simple counterpoints:

The current administrations won't be swayed by public opinion, so the scenario you laid out doesn't work so well.

Iran has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, which I suppose you can justify.

As far as I know the US still has a second strike policy when it comes to nuclear arms so they really wouldn't be nuking anyone first.

What else. Ah, it'd be monumentally stupid for an army of the level of Iran's to stand toe to toe with the US. Cutting off the supply lines, attacking and withdrawing quickly, and other stalling tactics would be the most effective.

Oh, wait, all of these have been brought up already. Guess I didn't need to repeat them since, as an educated person, you should be able to absorb those concepts the first time around.

First of all, a Sunburn is an anti-ship missile. While a pain in the ass for the Navy, it is a known property that they have long prepared to deal with.

Secondly, the SAM batteries in question are part of a sale that has been in negotiations, off and on, for years. Iran simply can't afford the price the Russians are asking for. Even then, the quantities involved aren't even enough to adequately cover Tehran, let alone all of Iran, or even its most critical points. The latest deal floating around, I believe involving the sale of Triumfs, will probably die like the rest.

Even so, those are not shoulder fired Stingers we're talking about. These are massive batteries, with Fire Control & Search Radar systems, that have missiles mounted in huge tubes on flatbed trucks that. Very farking obvious and easy targets, especially after they've launched their limited amount of munitions, for SEAD flights.

Exactly what the SCUDs were launched from, and we had a Hell of a time finding those. It just so happened that SCUDs were shiatty missiles.

Kyle Manitoba: Iran has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, which I suppose you can justify.

I won't justify it because it's just not true. That's a complete mischaracterization of what the Iranians have actually been saying about Israel. They think it will collapse on its own.

As far as I know the US still has a second strike policy when it comes to nuclear arms so they really wouldn't be nuking anyone first.

Nope... the attack plan demands a preemptive nuclear strike. There's no other way to hit their facilities.

Which doesn't mean they'd actually use nukes. That is, if anything, a reference to just how well reinforced those facilities are using a known quantity. The military is not advocating resorting to nuclear weapons precisely because of the gigantic shiatstorm that would ensue (nuclear weapons are, if anything, the one thing that could cause our traditional allies to break with us).

Could always land commandos (spelling! noes!) in there and neutralize each site. Costly, especially in human terms, but it would get the job done without a nuke.

The military guys at the Pentagon are horrified. They've asked several times to take the nukes out of the attack plan, but the civilian leadership refuses. The non-military guys who Bush has given the real power think it's fantastic.

I hear that several of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will resign rather than carry out these orders, if they come through.
