Useless against an insurgency ;)

No Catchy Nickname

I would think it would be very useful against an insurgency. With a modern insurgency, I imagine rebel command and control centers are constantly changing locations and meeting very briefly and possibly rarely. With its speed, this missile could hit a C&C center very shortly after identifying it. Possibly saving the military the human resources of having to send men in instead.

I'm just guessing and all, but it seems to me that this weapon would be useful. Of course, more useful would have been not creating an atmosphere for an insurgency. But it's a little late for that.

Well the real issue isn't that missile, it's the translation software.

You know what we've heard the NSA has been doing, now add in this little gem.

database of phone calls + automated transcription = total information awareness

//Encrypted VIOP, maybe even 1-time pads if you're worried

Ah yes, science rapidly catching up to and surpassing fiction.

At this point we are passed the point of asking CAN something be done. Once it is theoretically possible the question comes down to how economically it can be produced and what obvious changes is this technology going to make to society. Then we sit back and hope like hell there aren't any unintended and nasty ones.

/Psss, Mr. Navy dude. A machine that will take dictation in real time would be a boon to the biomedical field. I have friends in IT that have had to leave because carpal tunnel has left them unable to use conventional input devices.

RATTLRS stands for Revolutionary Approach to Time-critical Long Range Strike.

Never base your name off a cool sounding acronym. The long version will always wind up sounding really stupid.

"The engine allows the craft to travel at mach 3, three times the speed of sound, and although the researchers were tight-lipped about the details, it can cover distances larger than 500 nautical miles in a short amount of time."

Short amount of time indeed, like about 15 seconds. Pretty farking fast.

Why am I having flashbacks to the thread in which people were belly aching about the U.S. having 24 carriers and how that was WAY overkill compared to the rest of the world.

/It's 12 people.
//And at any point only 4 are in use. 4 are laid up for maintenance, and 4 are on their way somewhere.

What ever happened to that super-cool ultra-low friction ooze that I saw on TLC one day? They sprayed down a moving tank and it just spun on its treads. Covering people with the stuff leads to the Benny Hill theme being spontaniously emmited from the weapon. Scientist have no explaination for that.

Flager: The Kearsarge is an aircraft carrier? Holy crap..everything the navy ever taught me is wrong!!!!

Well, it carries aircraft --> Aircraft carrier. Don't expect a reporter to think beyond what first comes to mind.

tfa: such as this supersonice cruise missile called RATTLRS

super so nice cruise missle? ....this is gotta be a joke.

Ships named the Kearsarge have always had the informal nickname, the Queerbarge among sailors.

The nicest cruise missle around. It plays this recording saying "my bad, sorry about this!!" right before it slams into your apartment complex and kills your whole extended family.

OH BOY....TROTTING OUT THE LATEST KILLING GADGETS!

*clasps hands over heart and sheds tear*

Say that reminds me, you don't suppose the idea of endless warfare is somehow linked to the fact that we are nothing but a giant arms manufacturer do you?

More weapons = more war; more war = more weapons!

Think about that next time you drool over the military hardware ads that now appear every day on FARK while at the same time sending your kids off to war.

TFA: Because languages like English and Arabic are so different, the company has focused on retaining the meaning of what's being said rather than a direct translation that might be difficult to understand.

In the not-too distant future
U.S. soldier at checkpoint: "Turn off your engine and get out of the car".
Machine translation: "Bring me a shoe with cheese on it. I want to massage your grandmother."
Iraqi civilian thinks: "Stupid farking Americans - where do I sign up for the insurgency?"

i've been thinking...we've spent somewhere in the neighborhood of a trillion dollars or more on this ~war thing~ already.

wouldn't it be cheaper to do it like the swiss...i mean just pay off all our would-be enemies.

Communicating by Line of Sight

Also on display on the Kearsarge was a new way to help ships communicate over long distances using a set of binoculars and a device that attaches to the eye pieces.

And this should be new???? Hell, my father told me about a similar device the Germans developed in WWII.
