Interesting how there is a 3-year statute of limitations on them owing us back money. Somehow I doubt the same 3 years applies to us owing them money.

2006-05-25 01:27:30 PM
Please, please, please do not call your local phone company & biatch about this. It is for long-distance only. Unless you use a lot of long distance each month, don't expect to see a lot of dough out of this!

2006-05-25 01:27:42 PM
I'm sure we all have the last three years worth of phone bills lying around so we can figure out WTF to put on our tax returns next year.

SpongBub: Interesting how there is a 3-year statute of limitations on them owing us back money. Somehow I doubt the same 3 years applies to us owing them money.

I suspect you are correct. They could probably charge someone for not paying the 3% luxury tax in 2001, pile on a load of penalties, and make the charges stick in court because the tax hadn't been declared illegal in 2001.

2006-05-25 01:30:23 PM
Don't worry, the telephone companies will still collect the tax untill someone sues them and they suddenly discover the billing errors.

2006-05-25 01:37:01 PM
How is this spiffy? The pricks will just raise taxes somewhere else to compensate, and since people are dropping their landlines and LD phone calls in favor of cellphones with nationwide LD, guess where they'll probably go next.

farking leeches.

So when something like this happens, does:

The government simply cut spending to offset the revenue reduction

or

Does spending remain the same and the deficit just edges higher

or

Do they just find something else to tax to make up the difference ?

Unless the money they were collecting was just piling up in a box in the attic I would guess that it was being spent on something.

glad to see they finally paid off that war.

Damned right. *wonders if its possible for one guy with a sledgehammer to overthrow a government in real life*

Coming soon: 3% OIF Tax

SpongBub: Somehow I doubt the same 3 years applies to us owing them money.

Well, actually, it does.

The IRS is generally limited to auditing returns within the last 3 years. The exceptions are mainly for tax cheats -- not filing a return, not reporting a substantial amount of income, etc.

Queue someone whining about "where will the government make up the $6 billion in taxes they'll lose without the tax." in 3...2...1...

2006-05-25 03:17:45 PM
... because everyone knows that when the government takes a loss they just suck it up and never pass it on to the suckers citizens.

Owed $32 billion dollars in long distance tax money:

[Spiffy]? Are you kidding me? This is the stupidest thing ever. Reminds me of when the State of Oklahoma sent a check for like $30 to every man, woman, and child in the state. Yeah, thanks, guys. I'd *much* rather have $30 than have the state spend millions of dollars on something that would actually improve everyone's quality of life.

And even if they are going to do something like that, just give everyone a $30 discount next year. I can't imagine what could have been done with the postage money alone.

I support government funded solely by voluntary donations, to be spent as earmarked by the donor, within constitutional limits.

/crazy as a loon.

2006-05-25 05:04:35 PM
I want to know how in the heck we're supposed to figure out how much money we're owed. Are we going to have to go over 3 years worth of phone bills?

2006-05-25 05:04:42 PM
I am glad that my great great great great great grand children will be responsible for paying off this current war. That will teach them to stay off my heirloom nintendo!!!

Spanish-American war is over? I thought it was just beginning.

I say we start another war with Spain and call it even...

Well then my 40 acres and a mule can't be far behind.

2006-05-25 05:08:00 PM
Maybe we could use the money for something else instead. Are there any other wars going on?

The only $75 you like to pay (considering it's better than landing on Park Place or Boardwalk).

How much do you think the NSA will want for their cut?

2006-05-25 05:09:31 PM
All these tax rebates piss me off. The IRS spends millions just collecting the farking money and then spends more millions mailing refund checks to just give that money right back. Minus all the effort and expense the process sucked up. Spectacular waste of money. If you have to give it back, just let us write it off next year, or better yet, send ONE check to some chronically underfunded program, like fer example public schools.

2006-05-25 05:09:39 PM
Is this the same tax they threw Thoreau in jail for?

2006-05-25 05:09:41 PM
So my phone bill will now go down a little...right?...right?

Did somone repeal a "luxury" tax?

Tax cuts for the rich! Tax cuts for the rich!

2006-05-25 05:14:28 PM
I really get annoyed when people try to discredit a tax because it was "originally passed to pay for" something long gone. Sure, the Spanish-American War is over, but that doesn't change the fact that we're facing monumental budget shortfalls.

I really get annoyed when people try to discredit a tax because it was "originally passed to pay for" something long gone. Sure, the Spanish-American War is over, but that doesn't change the fact that we're facing monumental budget shortfalls.

I get really annoyed when people propose more taxes to cover budget shortfalls, instead of simply having the government spend less.

is that why i got a bill a few months ago for AZ taxes owed in 2001? i didnt even live in AZ till 2003. funny thing is, when i called them on it, they said they would look in to it. havnt heard from them since.

So how do we also get AL Gore & komittee's little telephone "fee" scheme (enacted during the reign of the Clinton regime) to be cancelled and get refunds.
