ok i obviously dont get it... why is a galloping ghost funny?

oh and little hint to whoever keeps that eyesore: ya might wanna consider using a text color that actually contrasts with the background, it makes reading the roster and stat pages a whole lot easier to read.

2002-06-14 01:01:52 AM
I have seen them at times after numerous bong sessions.

Great Galloping Ghosts! Where is Kaukauna? (It's farked.) Sounds like they should be called the Maui Wow-ies or the KomeonIwannalayyas or something.

...or the Knockleton Cockgobblers or whatever the hell that last one was.

2002-06-14 01:26:42 AM
How bout we start a Fark Fantasy Football League with the Cobden Applejackers and the Butte Pirates and the West Appleton Terrorists and the Pekin Chinks and the Fightin' Whities and the Gitchigumi Gallopin' Gumdrops and all the other schools that pop up here?

On second thought... let's just look at Boobies.

2002-06-14 01:27:01 AM
Ummmmmm..... I graduated from this school, sad to say. The name originated from a football game in the fog, where our team was wearing their white home uniforms and hence looked like a bunch of ghosts.

The names not the funny part, the big bronze statue of a man wearing a "ghost costume" is whats amusing. Hometown pride gone terrifyingly wrong...

Kaukauna is South of Green Bay, WI right on US 41. It's known for the stentch its paper mills make. Trust me, when you're driving past it on 41, you hope like hell the wind isn't blowing the smell towards the highway, it's quite unbearable.

On the subject of their high school's team name. This is one of those high schools that had a name referring to Native Americans. (If I remember right they were formerly known as the Chiefs.) Well, a few years back, the school board decided to change their name in order appease the nearby Indian tribe who had been constantly nagging them about their mascot for the past decade.

If I remember right the "Galloping Ghost" moniker is a reference to a pro football player from way back named Red Grange.

Just so we can end all of the links to Wisconsin high school team names: the other good ones are:

"Horicon Marsh-Men,"
"Monroe Cheese-makers."
"Watertown Goslings," and,
"Oconomowoc Coons."

(Yes, coons, short for racoons. -- I'll never forget the first time I wore my t-shirt in Virginia -- not the same reception you get up here.)

2002-06-14 01:37:38 AM
Oh, Sunspotltd's post corrected me. I always thought that their name was a reference to Red Grange, who was known as the "Galloping Ghost". Please, refresh my memory of what kaukauna was known as before they became the Ghosts. BTW, I have one question for you, Sunspotltd how the hell did you guys ever put up with the smell down there? I was driving a friend of mine from Norway down to Milwaukee to take him to a Brewer game last month and when we passed Kaukauna, he puked from the smell of the paper mills.

Geoshiatties offers pay sites nowadays with more bandwidth as well as their free one. This must be the free one.

SwC: Oconomowoc Coons

Not this place, I assume?

(Yes, this is the same logo used for "Cook's Chicken" in Ghost World, and it really existed!)

2002-06-14 01:44:10 AM
heh i thought that looked familiar, ghost world was the shiat.

2002-06-14 01:44:20 AM
Can we get some school called "The Onions" or even a pathetic "The Hermaphrodites"? That way, the opposition has no idea how to react.

2002-06-14 01:47:24 AM
No Kaukauna was the Tigers or some crud before they were the Ghosts. And yes Wldncrzy14 it is absolutely frightening that hundreds of students walk by that statue every day. I'm just glad I've graduated :P

2002-06-14 01:47:54 AM
Naw...

Oconomowoc is actually a pretty alright place... in general most (as I myself once was) are pretty oblivious to the fact that "coons" or "cooney" are derrogatory terms.

All in all, Wisconsin is just pretty much oblivious in most parts in terms of racism and such.

2002-06-14 01:48:11 AM
Yeah, I would have thought it to be in deep south AL/MS or something, not metro cities in OR/WA!

Ghost World=best movie of 2001!

Geez Fark has a lot of Wisconsinites on it...

I'll leave you all with this:

Sunspotltd

Who was it in that area that changed their name because they thought that it was offensive to Indians, was it Seymour?

2002-06-14 01:59:17 AM

The rivalry LIVES! For those who don't know, by law any Michigander who sees a Wisconsinite must shoot him or her on site, and vice versa.

Jonathan:

Don't listen to Sunspot, she's been on some bad crack this week.
Incidentally, her posts are 100% accurate. They were the Tigers until about 1920. As for the name coming from a foggy football game, that is not my understanding.
A bigger mystery is why they kept the orange and balck after becoming ghosts...

2002-06-14 06:12:22 AM
What do I do if one of my parents is from Michigan and one is from Wisconsin. Should I shoot both and hope for a postive judgement in the courts, and of course I nice settlement from the insurance companies.

Or should I claim Insainty from going to a high school who's name was the trojans.

Sunspotltd:
Holy crap. To find another Kaukauna person on Fark, and a former student of mine, to boot. Please don't say my name, but I'm the teacher who loved Marvin the Martian.

Who submitted the link, do you know? The official school site is not on Geocities, it's at the same place that picture of the statue is.

JonathanChance:I've been here for 10 years, and never recall us not being the ghosts. Never heard of ever having a school mascot that was Indian, but that's not to say it's not true.

Wow... we may have to have a Fox Valley Fark party.

2002-06-14 09:39:48 AM
Gavin too? Wow.

2002-06-14 09:42:00 AM
I'm from Kaukauna too, though I live in NY now. They were the Ghosts in the '60's when I was growing up there. Never knew they were anything else. I remember the ghost on horse back riding down the field before football games.

2002-06-14 11:43:59 AM
Kaukauna smells

2002-06-14 11:50:07 AM
The only thing that smells worse than Kaukauna paper mills is when the sewer backs up. Seriously.

2002-06-14 12:17:27 PM
From having to drive a delivery van through Kaukauna every Saturday and Sunday for two years for the Appleton Post Crescent, I will attest at how farking rank that town can be (especially when you grew up in a town with two, count 'em, TWO cookie factories).

2002-06-14 02:02:31 PM
JonathanChance

Yes, Kaukauna has a stench, but it's associated with its cheese factory, not paper mills. Where do you think Kaukauna Cheese comes from? If you want a REAL stench though, go to Monroe, WI. It's the only place in the U.S. that makes Limburger. YUCK!

2002-06-14 02:11:33 PM
wOot!! Kaukauna reunion party here, who did submit this link anyway? Oh, heads up to Mike, Amber, and Mr. G... =\

2002-06-14 02:20:58 PM
Aias are you from Ripon? They make yummy cookies.

2002-06-14 03:15:30 PM
Sorry, Boss_Frog... Kaukauna's single paper mill makes all that smell, not the cheese factory. Although the cold pack cheese is famous.

You just get used to it. Plus it only gets really bad before a good storm, when the wind shifts and the air gets thick. It just happens to be blowing toward HWY 41 a lot.

And hi, Kenn! I was really surprised to see this link today!

Damn, Fark has a LOT of members if this many people from the Valley are here.

2002-06-14 05:01:04 PM
ovaltine, Yep... I'm from that dot on the map... ended up in the valley for college

2002-06-14 05:40:53 PM
I submitted it! Proud Kaukauna High School student here! Decided to Fark the town over a bit. I hope that Geoshiatties site dies. Whoever designed it deserves to die. Visit http://khscat.kaukauna.k12.wi.us/ for the real Kaukauna High School site. At least it's not Geoshiatties...

2002-06-15 12:03:55 AM
Wow Mr. G, long time no see! :)
Guess we do need to have a Fox Valley Party, theres nothing I would love more then to see an old teacher at a Fark party.

'Its a small world after All....'

I always knew you were a cool guy, but this is just weirding me out, can't get over it for some reason. Part of me wants to go " Hehe, Mr. G just said Crap. " Yeah I know, haven't grown up a bit. :P
I can just imagine you leting the kids work on a project while you cruise Fark for SFW Boobie tags. And here I thought you just played bolo all day, silly me ;)

Gavin, Ken, and I are all prety good friends, hence our mutual valley Farkness. But there does seem to be an awful lot of other vally people here too, again weird.

And I just posted 2 times in a row, guess I am on some bad crack... :P

2002-06-15 10:31:08 AM
Cool, Sunspotltd And no comment on the boobies links. Heh. And hey, you forgot Kenn's second N. :P

It shouldn't be too hard to find my email address... shoot me a message. Let me know what's up with you guys. I'd love to hear from you.

Phil, what class are you in? I can't remember if I've seen that name before or not. I have no idea who created that site, because there's no contact info on it.

I think it's amusing that the picture of the statue outside our school got mod'ed out, though! SFKHS, not SFW? *snicker*

2002-06-16 12:09:34 AM
Jjokerski Class of 2004. And in regards to the site... the football coach probably made it in FrontPage Express or something. I mean.. the school couldn't even administer the REAL website properly, so my friend down the street is doing it for them. And in regard to a Valley Fark Party... I'm there, as long as there's no drinking. Bad beer, more boobies. (SFW, of course?)
