My mother was responsible for getting the permits for construction of a national restaurants expansion into Louisiana. Within one month of making the proper inquiries, she was contacted by 3 elected officials asking for bribe money to help with the permits. She and her company were so pissed, they cancelled the expansion plans and vowed never to expand into Louisiana. It is a culture of corruption from the top to the bottom and the voters seem not to care. Sad.

true, because democrats won't spend the next six months defending to the media someone who is obviously guilty.

2006-05-21 05:13:09 PM
Yeah, we catch 400 Republicans and all everyone says is that the whole thing must have been a misunderstanding, but catch one democrat and you get the "see, they're all crooks!". Meh, republican or democrat, doesn't matter to me. If they broke the law, prosecute them, lock 'em away, and then STFU!

Or as one clever farker put it,

Get down off your high horse, submitter, and get it out of here. It's crapping all over the carpet.

Sadly, this is probably true.

Since this was the act of a single corrupt official, and not an entire party structure built on influence peddling and dirty tricks.

Arrest him. End of story. It's not like having to trace the roots of the story through an entire party structure.

With the MSM owned by GOP interests that is Unlikely. With Faux n00z reporting 47 hits on Jefferson but only 45 on Tom Delay and 37 on Bob Ney, thi$ $tory has leg$, babeee, and it's gonna run until it has both legs broken.

This thread is pretty different from threads where Republican officials are caught breaking the law. In fact, I don't believe a single person has defended the Democrat in question. What does this tell us?

The plan was for the lawmaker to use the cash to bribe a high-ranking Nigerian official - the name is blacked out in the court document - to ensure the success of a business deal in that country, the affidavit said.

Now how the hell will he ever claim his share of the inheritance?

You know, the reason that GOP individuals are so often in the news for corruption IS a conspiracy.

But not a press conspiracy. A GOP conspiracy.

tharrisw: This thread is pretty different from threads where Republican officials are caught breaking the law. In fact, I don't believe a single person has defended the Democrat in question. What does this tell us?

That there is a lot les "maybe" in it. Delay for example, (no love lost and almost everyone, including the "apologists") was , like it or not, charged with oddly worded, charges on crimes no one really knows much about (unlike the "simple" bribery). By a Democrat who has said as much as his dislike for Delay, after shopping around jurys. Some of the charges later dropped, judges changed, etc.

The waters were muddier because there was more mud.

Very, very few people want Delay in power, or think he is innocent. But regardless of that his case is a lot more complicated than "on film for a simple charge" as this one. Delay got "defended" because there was room. Actually most of what I read wasn't defending Delay, as much as attacking the process and methods used by the prosecutor. I don't remember much of anyone saying he was innocent.

It also didn't help there was this feeding frenzy around Delay for a week or two before, with a lot of "see all Republicans are EVIL!" ramble.

Note no one is saying "All Democrats are evil" because of one guy. I think that is a pretty important difference too. No one is put on the defensive because of their party; they can just wash their hands of him.
