I like how, at the end of the article, the mother says something like "She's confused and angry" apparently as an explanation of how her daughter feels about being told she can no longer be 'friends' with the older girl but is pretty obviously her rationalization for why her daughter is a lesbian.

Sure the other girl is three years older than her daughter, but that only creates an apparent power imbalance, and I'm willing to bet this is only any kind of an issue at all because the mother hates the idea that her daughter is a lesbian.
