RTFA smitty. And if you did: do it again.

The Beach Boys have been after this guy for awhile, can't see that their case has any merit. Their manager sold him the stuff.

/all sales are final

Who owns the Beach Boys' original hit music?

Some publisher, probably. All of which has exactly what to do with this article?
2006-05-12 08:54:37 AM
"It's unfortunate that there are people out there that take advantage of situations like this and people willing to buy this stuff," he said.

Is he for real? Who wouldn't?
2006-05-12 09:53:28 AM

The Beach Boys became famous in the 1960s for their songs about the California lifestyle including "Surfin' USA," "California Girls" and "Help Me Rhonda."

I cry the world's smallest tears for the poor millionaire beach boys who are missing out on more millions.
2006-05-12 11:19:47 AM
You got that right, Rev. Skarekroe.

I still prefer Charlie's version of (originally) "Cease to Exist."
2006-05-12 11:20:04 AM
I am a total Beach Boys mark but, seriously, has there ever been a more litigiously farked up band?

Sounds like he bought it fair and square. Those hippie millionaires can suck it.
2006-05-12 11:30:32 AM
Their manager sold him the stuff.

But did he have the right to do that? I think that's where the issue is.
2006-05-12 11:31:06 AM
Oh, Caroline, no!

How is it you are seeing them live? They are not a band anymore, it's just Mike Love and some session players. A shadow of the former greatness, like a bad cover of itself.
/Glenn Campbell was a Beach Boy, for crying out loud.
//As was John "Full House" Stamos.

I love the music dearly, but, it is over, please, let the corpse cool off now.

Yeah, just as saccharine and superficial. Yuck.

Agreed. Listen to "Smile" with headphones - they'll have to call the fire department to get you back down from the ceiling and a surgeon to remove the grin from your face.

And he wrote that entire album in his head, in his early 20s.
2006-05-12 11:41:07 AM
monkey muffin: Seeing them July 3rd at a free concert!

Which Beach Boys? Last I knew, there were two groups touring as the "Beach Boys"-- one fronted by Mike Love, and one by Al Jardine. Brian Wilson is out on his own promoting "Smile," and Carl and Dennis Wilson are both dead, I think. So any "Beach Boys" you see will have, at best, only 20% actual Beach Boy content. Then again, at least you're not seeing the Temptations...
2006-05-12 11:45:19 AM
To all the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson haters - do not base your opinions on the Beach Boys' hits! All I knew were the hits, and just hearing the name "Beach Boys" would turn my stomach. A friend turned me on to their non-hit stuff, and holy Jesus some of it is brilliant. Been an awed admirer of the Wilson ever since.
2006-05-12 11:49:22 AM
Kudos to brap, that made me LOL

I agree. Hearing Brian in concert with his full orchestra is hearing the Beach Boys music as it should have sounded 40 years ago. Clearly he is THE Beach Boy and Mike Love and others were there just there for the ride.

Ever hear Mike Love's band live? Ouch.
2006-05-12 12:11:32 PM
Mike Love is a prick. If this keeps him from making more money, I'll just go buy more copies of Smile and make Brian Wilson richer while keeping that hypocrite ass from any of my money.
2006-05-12 12:14:17 PM
Funny how I used to think that the Beach Boys just had those simplistic Surfin USA songs. Then I heard Pet Sounds. Probably the greatest album of all time. Smile is also incredible, just 36 years late.
2006-05-12 12:16:32 PM
Did anyone else give 100 bucks to the katrina effort and get a call from Brian Wilson himself?

Anyways, these guys have been litigating against each other for 10 years now, it's worse than the Beatles.
2006-05-12 12:18:47 PM
"Wild Honey" is my fav. album.

The Beach Boys SHOULD have been more accomplished and be held in higher regard, but two things farked that up.
1) Brian was put under too much pressure by asshats like Mike Love. Carl and Al were ok, but the other guys were pretty useless.
2) They can't escape their image as the kids in striped shirts singing "I Get Around." Which is too bad, because they had some great late '60s/early '70s albums.
2006-05-12 12:30:24 PM
Sounds like the guy is in the right to me.
2006-05-12 01:11:54 PM
Wow there's a lot of Beach Boys fans on FARK. My head explodes when I try to reconcile this with the typical political-flamewar FARKer.

2006-05-12 01:22:10 PM
I am totally with the 'Brian Wilson is a genious' crowd. His harmonies and arrangements are so ground-breaking within the pop music genre, you cannot overstate how far ahead Brian is of everyone else, even if the Beach Boys' lyrical subject is a bit trite.

I find the Mozart comparison to be a bit of a stretch but his compositions are America's equivalent to Lennon/McCartney.
2006-05-12 03:18:16 PM
Yall gave me the impetous to go get 'smile'.

2006-05-12 03:38:21 PM
Brian Wilson just wasn't meant for his times. Yeah, I would put him on a level with McCartney, I think Macca might be a little better lyricist, but Brian is deeper in the arrangements area and those incredible harmonies. Paul, while still formidable, has not been quite as good without Lennon, but showed some of that same old magic when he teamed up with Elvis Costello for an album.

If I could smoosh Macca, Brian, and Elvis Costello into one singer-songwriter, I could, dare I say it... rule the world.

the beach boys suck.

the beach boys have always sucked.

the beach boys will always suck.

they are more hype promotion than musical ablilty.

'scuse me while I puke.

batcar01 is actually Dean Torrence.
2006-05-12 07:54:35 PM
I'll bet this lawsuit comes from Mike love. That asshat actually claims "Kokomo" as the greatest beachboys song. That's because he only sees dollar signs.

The sad thing is that there is already enough money for everyone.

No one remembers that The Beachboys were creating albums that were as intense as the Beatles. Pet sounds is a masterpiece, and SmiLe would have changed American music.

I'm worried that this litigation shiat will make us forget what could have been.
2006-05-13 12:37:44 AM
Brian Wilson is a genious.
2006-05-13 12:39:43 AM
Anybody who says The Beach Boys sucks - sucks.
2006-05-13 01:27:18 AM
It's spelled GENIUS.
2006-05-13 11:50:07 AM
Could anyone explain just what it is that makes Pet Sounds such a great album/The Beach Boys such a great band?

They're pleasant enough pop tunes, but very saccharine and sound dated (IMHO).

Not a troll. I like the album, just don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about it.

/ Did see Brian Wilson at Glastonbury though, very enjoyable experience.
2006-05-13 12:45:12 PM

Sure. U2. Check out their habit of suing garage bands.
