Fools!

Somebody pays attention and they are an idiot. Next, somebody ignores something obvious and they are an idiot.

Let's all just admit we're all idiots and go home. Nobody's trying to hurt us. Don't pay any attention to anything.

Cut no slack for the careful ones who are trying, especially when they are wrong. Make fun of them, you knew better, smarty. You should be everywhere.

There will never be a grandmother bomber. There will never be a balding white guy murderer. Get your shiat together and ask Farkers who the baddies are, they KNOW.

FOOLS!

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

If I read Penhouse on a plane, then I might get arrested for thinking about having sex with one of the flight crew, right?

It's obviously at a government warehouse. Seriously, how could anyone believe that with all the eyewitness testimony of people seeing an airliner, you know, strike the Pentagon? It's not like the Pentagon is in some rural area or something.

So reading a flight manual + speaking all "furrin" is now probable cause to be detained?

I wonder if I bought a flight manual for a 747 and spoke English on El Al or Emirates if I'd get detained by the Israelis or the UAE authorities.

DontMakeMeComeBackThere

let me tell you a story about some guys who were just taking a couple of flying lessons...

OK. So you're accepting the government account: that these bozos who took 'a couple of flying lessons' were able to commandeer planes that were near cruising altitude, fly them accurately to specific targets in Manhattan and the Pentagon with no visual cues (visual cues are almost nonexistent at high altitude) and skillfully hit all targets almost dead-on with a minimal number of "hunting" maneuvers? The supposed hijacker pilot on Flight 77 couldn't even satisfactorily control a damned Cessna 172, one of the most stable and user-friendly aircraft in existence, and subsequently dropped out of flight school! How would he singlehandedly direct a 757 to the Pentagon, fly it so low that it clipped light poles, then smash it into the Pentagon without even touching a blade of grass on the lawn outside?

Not to mention that the official pilot of 77 was a seasoned combat pilot who would have immediately flipped the plane upside down at the first hint of a hijacking to try and incapacitate the hijackers, according to people who knew him.

Plus, the govt. has confiscated all video surveillance tapes that would have shown a plane coming in - there is no proof whatsoever that a commercial jet even was the object that struck the Pentagon (and the parts found at the crash scene don't resemble those from a 757 - "Spare Change" has a very good segment about this.)

Face it, sheeple. The most unbelievable conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11 are those that the government and media have spoon-fed you. Do some research and draw your own conclusions - don't just accept Bushco/CNN/etc.'s propaganda at face value and bleat approval every time Bush makes a dundering fool of himself in front of a microphone.

Really, who the heck reads a MANUAL when they're moments away from attempting a hijack?

"Chapter 4: Flying.

Allah says to turn the control yoke left to turn the airplane left. Allas says to turn the control yoke right to turn the airplane right. Push the control yoke forward to raise the plane higher.

Did you crash?

Haha! That's because Allah didn't say."

Moderation in all things, people...

Airline / port security used to be a joke. A co-worker and I accidentially ended up in the control tower at Logan Intl. once, we were approaching the elevator that we **thought** was for the skylounge and yelled to the guy who had just got in "Hey! Hold the elevator!"

Then we noticed he was punching in a security code. Woopsie. Wrong elevator. And I was carrying a bag full of tools.

We kept our mouths shut and fortunately we didn't need a code to go back to the concourse. We found the skylounge an had a few beers and that was the end of it.

The TSA is in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation, but this instance is pretty silly...

Now we have the equivalent of "Driving While Black."

How many areospace / aviation students, employees, consultants, and randomly interested people are there out there who have nothing better to do on a long flight than read something in their field?

I think 2006-05-06 11:12:50 PM Mernya's on to something.

2006-05-07 12:12:55 AM
And to think, we Canuckdians have it all backward. Just try leaving an airport in Toronto without running into at least eight turbin-clad security guards.

Apparently, we put our terrorists behind the counters. Either that, or the brown people aren't much of a threat at all. But Fox News wouldn't lie to me.. Would they?

2006-05-07 12:12:59 AM
What these guys were doing WAS suspicious and they were only detained briefly, questioned then released. Yes, it may have been because they were "brown". It's been the "brown" people who have been hijacking our planes and flying into buildings. When 70 year old asian ladies start doing the same we'll profile them as well. You whiners would complain if you were hung with new rope. "Some middle eastern guys were briefly detained ... Bush is Hitler ... America isn't free ... waaaahhhhhhhhh" The guys posting this stuff would be the same guys pissing themselves and cowering behind their seats if these guys had turned out to be be terrorists and had made a move toward the cockpit.

I trust airline pilots, police officers, and martial-arts students aren't permitted to fly commercially? If anyone has the skills to incapacitate the crew, and take control of the plane, it's them. They shouldn't even be allowed into the airport.
In fact, anyone capable of grabbing a flight yoke shouldn't be allowed to leave their house.

How many female suicide bombers do you remember before ohhh... 3-4 years ago? They weren't in the profile. And why do you think Israel is getting female suicide bombers now?

Profiling is not going to keep up with terrorism, and it's one of the easiest traps to predict.

It would have been nice if say... a federal agents' considered report on a known suspect in a known location had carried some weight, but that didn't work.

Guess what people...we live in a 9/11 society. So some people saw four arab men (yes ill say it, they were arab) reading flight manuals, and they decided to check up on it.

Because guess what, the original terrorists, they were arabic, and they did the whole "flight manual" thing too. So people are now more concious of these things.

The men were picked up, they were questioned, and they were released. They WERENT arrested, and they WERENT abused. All i see is the government doing its job...and Id prefer this happen a thousand times just to be safe, rather than EVEN ONE terrorist attack, because people were pissed off at this "ethnic profiling"

You're right, I would be scared if someone tried to take over the cockpit. That doesn't mean I need to go trigger-happy over every person just trying to take a nice flight.

maxheck: Profiling is not going to keep up with terrorism, and it's one of the easiest traps to predict.

It's going to improve the odds and that is all we can ask. How many non-middle eastern males have hijacked a western plane in the last several years? I can think of only one ... the woman who carried the bomb for her middle eastern male "boyfriend" a few years back.

Profiling makes absolute sense so long as it is done reasonably. If you're walking down an urban street alone at night and on one side of the street you see three young african american men wearing gang colors and on the other three Hasidic Jewish boys the same age which side of the street would YOU choose. It's playing the odds ... it is no different than playing poker in Vegas. You may not know what card is coming up so you improve your odds the best you can then play the cards you are dealt.

If it saves a life by snaring the drunk driver that comes after me then more power to them. I will deal with the incovienence, be a little pissed off then go to my meeting and explain to the client why I was late.

2006-05-07 12:53:59 AM
maxheck

Yeah, I'd be pissed about being late to my meeting. But I'm not driving drunk, so if they want to see me put my finger to my nose, thats fine with me. And it was my understanding, though i may be wrong, that they can only search with my permisson / with probably cause, which they would have neither. And they wouldnt want to anyway, because id be perfectly sober.

Besides, the alternative is having drunks on the road. Did you read that article a few days ago how a early checkpoint caught a shiatload of DD? The problem is that there's no way of seeing how many of those people would have gotten into accidents on thier way (or, yes, safely gotten home).

I do see your point. My point is that people give up rights for safety, which is provided by a government. Only now, post 9/11, you have a risk of getting held up for a few hours by people who are honestly trying to stop something bad from happening.

savonola:

Are you familiar with the idea behind a "Drug Mule?" It's not like illicit sorts don't know about it, and in fact, profiling can carry you very far wrong.

If you're walking down an urban street alone at night and on one side of the street you see three young african american men wearing gang colors and on the other three Hasidic Jewish boys the same age which side of the street would YOU choose.

Please compare that with what was described in the article. Were these aviation-text reading guys wearing "Death To The Great Satan" t-shirts on a plane full of Southern Baptist Gospel singers?

Oh... No, perhaps they were, perhaps they weren't. For all you or I know, they were the most conservatively dressed, well behaved people on the plane.

So what was singled out?

What camps are you talking about? Camps full of poor brown people who have been detained on airplanes? Besides there we hundreds of arrests of milita members in the years after Oklahoma and the "camps" are called federal prisons. The feds broke the back of the milita movement in this country. Right after Oklahoma City was no time to be a "gun enthusiast" in Idaho or Montana I can assure you.
