Ah, South Carolina. Will you ever win?

2006-05-06 03:04:16 PM
They did that at mine back in 97...

Expelled kids whos parents cheered too loudly.

My school sucked. 1400 in the graduating class and out Validictorian was a heroin addict with a perfect photographic memory whos speech was 1hr15min long.

img.fark.com indeed. My high school graduation was boring as hell until my buddy's family set off air horns and waved flags when he was announced.

2006-05-06 03:52:09 PM
Yeah, at my high school graduation, they had security all over the place and leave the lights on so they can easily identify and eject anybody who cheers when a name is announced.

I only went to my HS graduation ceremony because I had to. I asked if I could just pick up my diploma the day after the ceremony and they said no. I had to attend.

What a crock. Big waste of 3 hours of my life.

Oh, come on... let them hoot and holler! You know that thoothless woman in the picture will not be attending a college graduation in four years.

/just sayin'

Good luck with that.

At the exclusive all-girls private school in which I taught, they smuggled in tiny bottles of bubbles and deflated beach balls under their skirts (which they managed to inflate during speeches). In the middle of the ceremony, which included a Catholic mass, out came the balls and bubbles. One girl got a spiked beach ball in the nose. Those were the graduates, of course. I don't even remember what the crowd did.

Gee, wouldn't it be good to, I don't know, wait until the ruckus died down before announcing the next name? You could always ask those cheering to quiet down after a few moments and then move on.

As for my own graduation, they said if we acknowledged any kind of response to our name being said, they would not give us our diploma and make us take a course over the summer as punishment. They were full of it, as I found out later.

2006-05-06 04:04:13 PM
This is too easy. Just get all the kids and parents together, and make sure everyone agrees to start yelling "Inappropriate noise!" all through the ceremony. Hilarity would ensue. Screw the holier than thou boards.

I had my college commencement today at USC and people were obnoxious occasionally when their friends' names were called.
This isn't PC in anyway but it was almost exclusively the black families and the black fraternities. Most people were behaved but it just takes a few people to ruin a ceremony.

/Our guest speaker for the commencement was horrible. She prattled on about herself for the most part. I think they need to proofread speeches because it was pathetic.

How do you expell someone who has graduated?

I also graduated early and had to go to graduation. It was held in a methodist camp's "activity center" which in reality turned out to be a metal auditorium. In June. In Norcross GA. I can imagne being hotter, but I'd have to travel to the surface of a smallish star to do so. Now I live in SC. I love the land, and the laid back atmosphere about some things. I hate the facist atmosphere about everything else. Needless to say, the fascists are everywhere here. Seperation of chruch and state? That's what happens when someone forgets their bible. The local "news" (and I use that term loosely)features every night some dumbass complaining about how someone else might be having fun or enjoying their life in direct conflict with what the bible says. No joke. It kills me.

Seriously, my brother was the Salutatorian of his class and had a very nice speech. But you couldn't hear him because of one single baby crying throughout the entire damn thing.

I have to agree. I've been to four commencement ceremonies at UNLV and the same thing happens every time. The black families, with about ten to twenty people, yell loudly, blow airhors, scream, whatever, when their mediocre son or daughter's name is called. They end up drowning out the next two or three names. The kid is almost always wearing a lei or something because they didn't do well enough to wear a stole or cord.

As for waiting until it dies down:
1. The people saying the names can't hear the screaming - they're too far away.
2. It's college - there are far too many names to get through.

So, just STFU you stupid idiots. Nobody cares about your stupid kid and their barely passable performance.

Maybe you guys are still feeling nostalgic over it, but I think public schools need to get out of the party business. It's unnecessary, it's not their job, it's not what they're good at, and they only stand to make trouble for themselves if some momma's brat ends up screwed or drunk.

Back in the day, it made sense for schools to sponsor a dance, but modern kids have the resources to throw a far superior party to anything their teachers could come up with (and still keep their job.) A prom may have been a climax of excitement to a teen back in the '50s, but today its a lameass substitute for a party with no booze, no drugs, and a staff of glowering middle-aged dudes who are all bitter from having to spend hours watching pimply dorks getting ready to bang 17-year-olds. Bad vibe all around. This tradition needs to die.

800 seniors X 1/2 minute of whooping and hollering per student = 400 minutes = 3 1/2 + hours wasted when all anybody wants to do is get the heck out of there. That's why we hire extra security at the school where I teach.

Leviathanial: Please Frank Anthrax, tell us what you really think about the ni1ger race.

Sure, no problem. I hate all 's. That good enough for you.

It's called an observation, bozo. That is simply what happens. And I don't agree with it.

It's doesn't matter what color they are. Black, white, yellow, brown, whatever, they are still annoying. And certainly, it is not EVERY black family, but all the families who yell are black. It has been this way during all four commencements I have been to. My own commencement is next week, and I imagine it will be the same way.

2006-05-06 04:52:51 PM
I have to agree with the school. If there's a lot of people in the graduating class it can be hell to sit through a gigantic commencement if you're waiting for people to stop screaming and blowing airhorns.

Stating an observation that he has made is not being an ignorant bigot.

I think it has more to do with social class than it does with the color of skin.

Through my observations, the lower you go on the economic scale, the more obnoxious people are in public settings. Just my observation.

2006-05-06 05:26:11 PM
Pansies. My entire graduating class (and no doubt the grad classes of preceeding and following years) were frisked at the door upon entering the waiting area before high school graduation. Any "contraband" was confiscated. One guy managed to sneak a few deflated beach balls in his shoes. He was promptly hauled away whilst blowing them up, before his name was called.

I actually didn't see any of the actual ceremony. About 5 minutes into it, the kids with the last names starting with R and S(we were in alphabetical order) stood up ON THEIR CHAIRS and that of course wasn't dealt with at all.

/Thank you California for your public education.

At my graduation, there were several groups (all black) that were screaming, wouldn't sit down so others could see, trying to wave homemade signs and smacking other people seated beside them. You could just see everyone wrinkling their noses at them in disgust, but what could you do? I did see security go over to a couple of the groups and tell them to sit down and shut up but they only listened for a minute then would start back up again.

Although there were too many people in my class to be called out by name, it's completely inappropriate to be shouting and hollering and stomping your feet like you're at a Raiders game while we're trying to complete something memorable like graduating.

The sad thing is, is that I have seen exactly what he is talking about at the six or so I have been to in the past couple years, but I still stand on my opinions that it is more about social and economical class than the color of skin

KKK day on Fark or observant graduation participant day. Though I would like to add to the group and say that the two groups I most often see would be black families, and then preppy white kids. I think everyone should just graduate Mexican, quietly and illegally.

The thread is now over.

I always wondered what an ignorant bigot looked like. Thanks for including a pic in your profile.

Sigh. Guess you just didn't see my comment about race as a social construction, and it's not just that you're ignoring it so your point seems more valid, huh?

It's simply the way it is. All Asians are good at math and bad drivers, all Jews are stingy, all Mexicans mow lawns, and all blacks hoot and holler at graduation ceremonies. That what you were looking for?

I have the solution...

Why don't the turn the mic up on the people reading out the names. If they make it loud enough, they don't have to stop so people can celebrate the end of yet another horrible education.

2006-05-06 06:13:11 PM
Diamond Joe: The sad thing is, is that I have seen exactly what he is talking about at the six or so I have been to in the past couple years, but I still stand on my opinions that it is more about social and economical class than the color of skin

I wouldn't postulate about what background they come from because I have no idea. I only make observations and state them. I can only say what I see.

Indeed, I can't even say for sure that they are "black", only that they look "black". I say the students are mediocre because I have never seen one with any kind of honors, and they almost all wear lei's to compensate for lack of regalia. Barely passable was hyperbole to get my point across. Sorry 'bout that one.

But my observation stands, because it is simply that: an observation. Try and call me racist one more time, crazyeddie, please. Then let's have a debate about the existence of "race" itself and we'll see who is the true "racist". Keep your knee-jerk reactions to yourself.

2006-05-06 06:14:52 PM
JohnnyC: Why don't the turn the mic up on the people reading out the names. If they make it loud enough, they don't have to stop so people can celebrate the end of yet another horrible education.

Doesn't work, they tried it. Turn it up too loud, and you get feedback or it's just plain too loud and hurts the patron's ears.

It seems like a simple request to make that everyone be respectful of everyone else. If you want to hold your kid, friend, whatever, on a pedestal, fine, but do it on your own time.

crazyeddie: mentioning that the kid is black

Oh, and it's not "kid" in the singular. It's kids. As in plural. As in approximately fifty or sixty or so over the past four years. And every single one happened to be "black". This observation is not such a big deal by itself, and not worth mentioning, except that black people happen to be a small minority of the entire graduating body, yet every screaming group has been black. Draw your own conclusions. I have none.
