The company began filtering keywords out of text messages sent over Skype earlier this year, in accordance with vaguely-stated government regulations.

Nice.

/Didn't microsoft patent that, though?

Only SkypeOut, a part of the entire product, may be illegal. How is this ironic?

I think we can skip the part where the Irony Police haul submitter before the Irony Tribunal and skip right to the Irony Execution.

copyright infringement is illegal in the US, but anonymous P2P apps abound. The ironic part is that the gubmint or the RIAA\MPAA isn't usually what causes the downfall of these programs, it's usually people who side with them and don't object to using underhanded tactics, like flooding the networks with bogus files, files with virii, etc.

Shenme??

"appears to be of uncertain legality" != "illegal"

I'm pretty sure the only thing more ironic than this is having ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

Um... 13 million users is less than 2% of the total population.

There are more Christians in China than Skype users. Almost three times as many by many acounts.

I live in China, and I'm really not getting a kick out of any of these posts.

Where's the racism? Where's the outrage? Where's the opinions based on misinformation?

Is it still too early in the Western Hemisphere? Hillbillies still sleeping off the Budweiser from last night?

When Skype is outlawed, only outlaws will use Skype.

Driving over the speed limit is illegal, but practically everyone does it. There are still adultery and sodomy laws on the books. Even oral sex is illegal in several US States.

Despite what you read on Fark's immigration threads, illegal does not equal wrong.

There were some articles about this in china daily awhile ago. They were considering blocking it in Shanghai although i'm not sure if they ever did. I know in beijing it seems to work without a problem

Ok, so chip in something useful. How do you talk to anyone in the states? Email only? Make any voice calls? How is the quality? Use any VoIP?

I'm no tech nut, but maybe the same thing will happen for Google.....?

Actualy naahhhhh!! Just to be safe let's demand China give Google the boot and save the population from autocracy!!!!

Yeah, what is the quality like talking into that tin can attached to a very long piece of string stretching across the Pacific and attached to another can in the US?

Bet the can in the US is better made though, so the receiver's sound should be better. Wait, it's made in China?

Oh.

When I speed on the way to work, is that IRONIC too?

/and who's the asshat who started this whole "submitter" = "smitty" nonsense?

2006-05-06 10:37:11 AM
And of those 13 million, 12.999 million popped up on my Skype asking me to chat.

'Smitty' is about as insipid as 'snoogy oogy oogums'. Second only to 'quotes'.

stiletto_the_wise: Driving over the speed limit is illegal, but practically everyone does it. There are still adultery and sodomy laws on the books. Even oral sex is illegal in several US States.

True, but in China they have a serious urge to ENFORCE those laws a tad more violently, than say in America.

Of course, what we failed to mention was that 13 million people is roughly 1/938th the amount of people in China, oh, ah.
