Too bad they didn't pass a spell check law.

God damn it! Now we have to wait 6 years!

2006-05-05 06:42:27 PM
Good, I was hoping they'd clear the way for me and my MySpace teeny-biatch to get hitched...

2006-05-05 06:42:48 PM
The scariest thing is they had to set it up to 15.

2006-05-05 06:43:09 PM
After a pregnant 14-year-old from Nebraska drove to Kansas last year to marry her 22-year-old boyfriend, now serving time for having sex with the minor, Kansas lawmakers decided it was time the set a minimum marriage age.

....I don't even know where to start with this.

2006-05-05 06:43:48 PM
I'd marry it.

2006-05-05 06:43:54 PM
Wait... wasn't there that guy who go thrown in jail last year for statutory rape because his wife was 15, and they had been married when they lived in a different state or something? There was a FARK thread about it (of course).

If so... what happens to him?

Don't wait for marriage, GET married!

The return of child marriage should obviously start among the most civilized :)

Though it might sound fun for teens, it'd be a complete disaster to marry that early. Think about how many late 20-early 30 guys n gals are still worried about getting married...

For Michael Jackson: marrying two boys that are 7 1/2 years old each does not qualify.

In Texas, you go over the border to Oklahoma, buy a fishing license, and present that at the courthouse. Being a State document, it is legal.

Once you are married, that is called a "fait accompli" and it is quite a fathermucker to undo. Takes a fleet of lawyers and a lot of money.

Especially, if her dad goes to all that trouble to get it annulled, and as soon as he does, you take her back across the border to marry her all over again.

Ain't been there, ain't done that, wouldn't advise you to do it either but what the hell, I ain't your father.

You can marry them at 14 in India, even if you rape them at knifepoint, assuming your wife lets you. If she doesn't, all bets are off.

Madheretic The return of child marriage should obviously start among the most civilized :)

Um, they raised the minimum age from "none at all" to 15.

2006-05-05 07:04:30 PM
The age of consent here in Kansas is 16.

Seriously. A state where people want to plow under a century of science education and teach creationism in the public schools, and now they want to pimp out their teenage girls as child brides. This place must be scary.

The article says a 15-year-old can get married if a court rules it's in their best interest.

I think it's a trick. If a judge rules that it's in a 15-year-old's best interest to get married they know to impeach the judge.

/unless anyone can think of an instance where that would be the best course of action?

This reminded me of an ill-informed O'Reilly screed from 2004, which touched on this issue in one of his War on Christmas hallucinations.

It has happened in Canada. Once a traditional religious country, Canada has become like Holland in its embrace of the secular movement.... The fall of religion in Canada has corresponded to a change in public policy. Unlike Americans, Canadians have legalized gay marriage and any kind of abortion. Also, the age of consent for sex up north is just 14 years old. Can you imagine American adults being allowed to fool around with children that age? I can't.

Will O'Reilly lambaste Kansas for being a haven of liberalism, just like Canada has been since it made the age of consent 14 in, uh, 1892?

What are you talking about, Ant?! Teenagers are deep and have thoughts and...something, with ..yeah!

I still remember when I was a teenager and thought every little farking thing was the end of the world and a personal attack on me. Damn hormones. I'm really, really glad that is over. We just need to round all the teenagers up, put them in a single state somewhere like California, and not let them out until they become rational again.

2006-05-05 08:00:52 PM
Did anyone catch this part?
The Senate approved it a day earlier, 36-4.

That means that 4 people in positions of power voted AGAINST raising the minimum marriage age to 15. That's /really/ creepy.

I just turned 23 today, and while I'm all about looking at jailbait 16-17 year old chicks (look but don't touch, it isn't illegal, it just makes you a dirty old man, and I'm OK with that),

2006-05-05 08:01:18 PM
I had a friend who got married in Tennessee when she was 14 or 15.

Her high school made her get her husband's signature on her report cards.

Obama Bin Bin: You can marry them at 14 in India, even if you rape them at knifepoint, assuming your wife lets you. If she doesn't, all bets are off.

You suck. Ass. Through plastic straws.

Child marriage, while legal in India, doesn't automatically include consummation. The married couple is kept apart until they finish school(which is held to a much higher standard than in US, fifth grade students studying chemistry and civics on a 10th grade level) or turn 18, whichever is later. This is done mostly to secure wealth and bloodlines, rather than sex. Some of the more barbaric and dirt-poor regions which can't truly be considered Indian (with different customs and such) may do such despicable behavior, but if caught they are more severely punished than the equivalent crime here.

Learn your subject first, before blathering so.

They're just trying to protect traditional marriage (at least by Kansas' definition).

Traditionally women have gotten married much younger. So should they set a maximum age before the state classifies you as an old maid?

2006-05-05 08:21:27 PM
So, if a pair of 15-year-olds get hitched, they're going to need someplace to live. Plus, I'm sure they'll want to practice contraception for several years before trying to have kids. Therefore, I think they should get a condom-minium.

There are actually Americans, in higher education no less, who are unable to spell states in their own country.

Although I just looked up Hollins University, and it seems to be in Virginia.. there needs to be a hypocrite tag.

Mildly offtopic, but...

Is it just me but does it strike anyone as wrong that kids, who have extremely limited legal rights due to status as minors and little choice in where they live can be legally married off with the consent of their parents, who incidentally control much of their legal rights, accommodation, and means of survival?

I seriously hope there is some form of no-fault marriage annulment available to them some time after they turn 18 in case they, for example, were pressured into it in the first place.

You know, I'm hoping they voted against because they felt that 15 wasn't old enough.

But as the US government decided to move me to Kansas, I'm sure they were upset that this Bastion of Heartland American Family Values wanted to crack down on letting Uncle Jasper marry his 12-year old second cousin.

"What? Theu're twice removed! What's wrong with that?"
