Mini-skirts, good. Pubs, good. Cricket... not so good.

Dame Edna? Oh, for Christ's farking sake...

*slams head repeatedly on desk*

They left out soccer hoodlums and lager louts. That's what most people think of when they think of England, these days.

Morris dancing? What about the eunuchs and the bearded women?

What about bullet-tooth Tony?

Oh I forgot, they're all asleep. Well, since there are no Aussies around, I'll have to call submitter a cock myself for not knowing a got-damn thing about Dame Edna.

What about scarfs?

My wife and I were in London last week and it seems that EVERY SINGLE WOMAN in England wears a scarf. It doesn't matter if it is cold, hot, windy, humid, raining, dry... they wear a scarf.

Jock itch?

What a terrible list. The Beatles were the biggest thing ever. They were bigger than Jesus. Is the Queen? Cricket? Big Ben?

Espertron, you must have been in an area of london where only grannies hang out, and it must have been nippy out too

*can't belive how ignorant (not idiotic, there is a difference)most Americans seem to be when it comes to knowlege of other countries, granted us white brits aren't the best either- we're as likely to think 'they know English, why bother learning their language' as an American, but sheesh!*

"The Hay Wain" painting by John Constable, 1921

Uh, try 1821. Some iconic painting, when you can't even remember what century in which it was made.

And even though I'm one of cricket's biggest (American) fans, I still don't see it as an "icon." The whole list is a strange mix of stuff. Exactly the kind of thing New Labour loves.

2006-04-28 11:28:04 AM
Hmmm .. all these icons seem like things that the Tourist Board won't have to tiptoe around with regard to copywright infringement.

/Even the Big Book of British Smiles has probably got a copywright

Actually, we saw more YOUNG (20ish - 30ish) women wearing scarfs. Especially the thin, frilly 'fashionable' scarfs (not the think, knitted, wooly kind). It wasn't restricted to grannies my friend.

/doesn't get the 'ignorant of other countries rant.

Dame Edna is Australian, friends. ;)

2006-04-28 11:33:50 AM
Monty Python, yes. Should be on there. Beatles...not so much...they made all their business in America. All their songs, are owned by an American. (mostly) And who the fark is Dame Edna...help me out here.

No Midnight Oil, Men at Work or Crocodile Dundee either.

I always thought that Dame Edna was an Aussie.

2006-04-28 11:36:57 AM
Beatles = 1960s
Monty Python = 1970s
Dame Edna = Australian

2006-04-28 11:37:48 AM
This being Fark, I'm thinking that Dame Edna was added to submitters list for comic value.

Remember, farkers are smarter, better looking and wealthier that average. Right?

Monty Python, yes. Should be on there. Beatles...not so much...they made all their business in America.

Er, I don't get your reasoning there, bud. The Beatles were rather popular over here too.

No INXS? No Cate Blanchett? No Cane Toads? This list sux.

2006-04-28 11:40:02 AM
INXS is an Australian band.

2006-04-28 11:40:33 AM
What about the titan of comedy that was Benny Hill?

From that, I now assume every Englishman turns into a dirty old man.

2006-04-28 11:50:54 AM
INXS is an Australian band.

No shiat?

Im also appalled that Kylie Minogue, Fosters Lager and Boomerangs arent on the list either.

What, theyre Austrian too? Strewth mate.....

Seeing as they have taken a view to try and provide a broad view of culture in England the contents of the list they have so far doesnt seem all that bad to be honest.
