heap: would your interpretation of 'official' mandate that certain songs can only be sung in english?

No...exclusive to the National Anthem.
In the same respect that no other flag flies above the American.

and the very thing they symbolize is the freedom to do both things you described.

Yea, and we've been down that argument before. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

do you know by the official rules of flag ettiquette of the Flag of the United States of America the only accepted form of disposal is burning it?

Kazan: Pele showed up for RBNY's first home game

He's still alive?

hehee.

I played soccer for 10 years as a kid. Besides the live games, i never got a thrill other than playing it. Now, I get my soccer thrills from my brother-in-laws' soccer games (13 & 8).

I've forsaken all other sports and have become a NASCAR fan....

Kazan: the only accepted form of disposal is burning it?

When I say "burning flags" I mean "burning in a purposeful disrespect that is not in accordance with the official rules of flag ettiquette". ;)

Bonkthat_Again

the fact remains: burning the flag is one of the very freedoms the flag represents. Burning the flag is the ultimate expression of what it represents.

Which is worse: someone literally burning the flag in protest or the government effectively burning the constitution (holding without charge, warrantless wiretapping, "laws" that did not pass both houses of congress, unitary executive, etc)

Bonkthat_Again: No...exclusive to the National Anthem.

you're serious? you'd want legislation on how the anthem can be sung?

what would the penalty be?

In the same respect that no other flag flies above the American.

if it's your flagpole, it's your business. if it aint...i'm just not seeing where you're coming from here.

Yea, and we've been down that argument before. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

we can waste all of our time shooting the shiat on fark, but we probably shouldn't. i don't see that stopping anybody ;^)

Bonkthat_Again: In the same respect that no other flag flies above the American.

It's U.S. code, not a law. You can't be arrested for flying the flag of Georgia, say, above the American flag.

Holy shiat. This isn't even on the main page yet and this thread is already enormous.

My take:

Anyone who contributed to this bastardized version of our national anthem needs to die in a fire.

I cannot agree with that. My uncle was a big part of the VFW. I practically grew up there on the weekends. To them, burning the flag is an insult to the brethren who sacrificed their lives for it. I guess I inherited that sentiment from them.

i'm almost positive i've agreed with you in other conversations that a person has no right to not be offended.

i guess we all have our sacred cows.

heap: you're serious? you'd want legislation on how the anthem can be sung?

No...not a law....code...like the flag.

and to me their opinion is an insult to the very freedoms the flag stands for.

You hit the nail on the head.

i'm almost positive i've agreed with you in other conversations that a person has no right to not be offended.

...with the exception of the flag and the national anthem.
It's 2 things we should preserve for the memory of those who gave and protected our freedoms.

so...something like a symbolic gesture?

symbolic gestures about symbols...something about this really doesn't seem worth getting worked up over the more it's discussed.

Alrighty then...What should we get worked up over next? ;)

You wanna move to the "Cyberattacks from Saudi Arabia" thread. Dam't towell-heads shouldn't be using computers...

hey, so long as nobody is trying to take away my cheeseburger on account of their sacred cow, i've got no complaints.

i agree, and i hope you do. i don't expect my feelings on the topic should decide anyone elses course of action, tho.

I live in Los Angeles, so I see firsthand what the illegal immigrant influx is doing to our local economy and way of living. Let me tell you, a small savings on food and construction costs is not worth the money we have to pay for the overcrowded schools and medical bills of the illegals. More importantly it is impossible to afford a house with a "middle class" income. Bush touts the number of jobs created while ignoring that the immigration numbers far outpace job creation. Joblessness breeds crime, and illegals in search of jobs fuel the identity theft market. Illegals get a very easy ride here and yet they want more. No. No soup for you.

Jokes on them. The Star-Spangled Banner is a terrible song. Suckers!

you ever think that those problems are caused by the way our federal govt, economies, and local govts are run?

It's U.S. code, not a law.

The US Code is law. For example, 18 USC 111 covers assault. However, the flag etiquette code provisions do not penalize people for improperly displaying the flag nor are they criminal in nature.

I'm only going to sing the National Anthem in Klingon from now on.

When I submitted this earlier (my headline was NOT funnier) the article said something about the recording was being sent to tons of Latino radio stations today in mp3 format with the request that it be played at 6:00 CDT.

This comes down to the whole "If you come to my country, learn the language argument".

I'm not going to move to France and tell them all to learn English...

Say the Following Place Names for me Please:

Colorado
New MEXICO
Arizona

San Francisco
Los Angeles
San Diego

The Sierra Madres

the Grande Tetons

The Sangre De Cristo

The Rio Grande

I could go On but you get the idea. Notice anything about those names? They are all SPANISH. Why? Because the People that settled those regions (after the indians who just get screwed in these discussions of course) spoke Spanish So why, when the settlers in their Conestooga wagons came rolling into the regions wasn't it THEIR job as farking immigrants to learn SPANISH rather than vice versa?

your Cultural imperialism is showing

In that case, 325, because it seems like Sapient's post of *popcorn* was more of a suggestion.

And a tasty one at that.

Anyone up for translating "God Save the Queen" into French? Seems only appropriate...

/ since this version was written by a Brit and all...

2006-04-28 01:34:09 PM
Smoke screen! This whole immigration thing is a smoke screen.

That said, it's the words that give the Star Spangled Banner it's meaning. It's not which language they're sung in. It could be Frence, Japanese, Spanish, or English...but the meaning is in the words. The new version should not change them.

They wanted to get rid of references to bombs and rockets? That's how this country became free to begin with. It's not a happy, fuzzy feeling, but it's the truth and we have to remember that and pay homage to that. They re-wrote the second stanza? WTF?

2006-04-28 01:34:09 PM
I hate to say it but this illegal immigration will not stop anytime soon. Why? Both power bases of the political spectrum want it to continue despite rhetoric to the contrary. The left because it expands their constituency and thus their power and the right, read business and industry, because it it puts downward pressure on labor costs thus increasing corporate profits across the the board. Face it people this issue shows just how powerless "we the people" truly are in this republic.

2006-04-28 01:34:17 PM
As you all probably know, I am all for comprehensive immigration reform, and am generally of the view that immigrants are good for our nation, not bad.

But this is Bullshiat.

I wan an English language Mexican national Anthem.

Since nastalgia is overrunning your senses, perhaps we should bring back some other time-honored traditions. Slavery, anyone?

2006-04-28 01:34:31 PM
Why don't we just have a national anthem in every language?

/Oh Miseru no?

We live in a Corporate Oligarchy, you're foolin' yourself if you think it's a Republic. The Senators didi it in Rome, the Corporations did it Here.
