heap: why?

Who gets to decide which language it's played at a sporting event? What if half the soccer fans are Hispanic-Americans, and the other half is German-Americans? Do you play the Spanish version, the German one, or both?

It's farking stupid, that's why.

Has anyone demanded that? Or are you just pre-emptively offended?

all that responded

No, it was a purposeful inflammatory gesture by the pro-immigration community. Many immigrants come to this land, pick up an American flag, and become patriotic. They don't need to remix songs and take days off to do it. What we have here is blatant ethnocentrism in the Hispanic community. No one is asking them to take white names and quit celebrating Spanish or Mexican holidays. But the community instead does something they damn well know won't be received positively to prove they can act like assholes and rub other people's face in it. It does nothing but irrationalize the debate further, and obstruct progress.

MuppetPastor: Most of you are probably too young to remember the massive outcry when Rosanne butchered the anthem in English.

no, i remember, and it reflected poorly on rossane barr.

sure, i could see someone saying this reflected poorly on the people that recorded this. i'm just not seeing the litany of tangents attached to this as making much sense - much less a comparison to intentionally butchering a song while grabbing fat meat curtains. i jive on what you're saying, but at the same time...it just doesn't seem like the intentions here are as evil as they are being portrayed.

there *are* groups of the opinion that several of the united states should be ceeded back to mexico and other outlandish things. there are a whole host of issues related to immigration that will actually affect this country. some twerps in a recording studio...well...i just gotta say...i'm kinda baffled why anyone would give a shiat.

Heh...you are absolutely right. I am pre-emptively offended with respect to sporting events. I am wholeheartedly offended at Mexican flags waived at functions to promote American integration.

They should be waving AMERICAN flags....and they should be playing the ORIGINAL Star-Spangled Banner on the radio stations.

I'd be singing a different tune if that was the case...

mess with the most important songs in this land

How exactly can a song be considered important? I mean, the story of it's creation is inspirational, but it's not like the song itself has any bearing on the country.

Something tells me if there was some bastardized version of the anthem bashing Mexicans, people would be laughing and singing it. Here, I'll put my genius to evil use for one moment:

O say, can you see, by the lawn's early light,
What so proudly we mow till the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad blade and bright rake, through the perilous brush,
O'er the sprinklers we mowed, and had to pay compensation!
And the hot sauce red glare, the gas bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our family of 20 living in a one bedroom apartment was still there:
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the white america we are relentlessly invading?

No, I would not find ethnic bashing funny, and even less funny is people perverting our national anthem to humilate others (I understand you did it to prove a point). The national anthem gives me pride when I hear it, and hope that we can mature and pass these rough times with ease. And it is offensive when other people treat it like a dub mix to enflame a debate.

When I say "demand" i mean "refuse to learn English". In my town, there's a petition (among illegals nonetheless) to put duplicate signs at the train station. All the signs are in English and they want additional ones in Spanish. Now, the Retion of Spanish speaking to English speaking people in my town is about 1-25. The town 5 miles south of us is dominated by Hatians. There, the ratio is 2-3 (Hatian speaking). Now, there are no petitions in that town demanding duplicate signs. In fact, almost every Hatian that has come over has learned to speak English. I work with a lot of them. I can give directions in English and they understand...and can recipriocate. However, some of the Spanish speaking people just give you a blank stare. They only listen when I speak Spanish to them.

You do realize that the anthem is itself a "dub mix" of To Anacreon in Heaven?

Where's the Anacreontic outrage?

Yea, I remember that. I am sometimes shocked by the stupidity of our fellow Americans.

As an aside, I was channel surfing the other night, and came across some beauty pageant show on mtv. There was this girl (probably 17 or so) who was saying how she always gives very intellectual answers to the pageant questions. Then someone asked who the current vice-president was, and her response was "Kennedy."

I'm also willing to bet that most people think the Anthem was written about the war for independence, and not the war of 1812.

I'm also willing to bet most people don't even know there was a war of 1812, much the less what it was about.

well....beyond that, you are making the assumption that it will be demanded. mayhap the school would *want* to do something like that. will america go *poof* and disappear up it's collective ass when/if that happens? does it cost you anything, or deny you anything? i live in BFE indiana, and i remember a football game in highschool where the band played 'o canada' during halftime...no canadians were likely even at the stadium...the band just learned a new song and wanted to play it. somehow, you, i, and the country at large survived.

you'll get no argument from me - this is without a doubt a misstep on their part. they coulda recorded it in english, and likely have made a point without all of the blather.

that said, i'm just not seeing everything that is being attached to this conversation as...actually having anything to do w/ some twerps in a recording studio.

I'm just a subscriber to "You can't make everyone happy all the time". I think English should be made the official language.

We realy don't have much culture of our own. The few things that symbolize America are all that we have. Butchering the National Anthem is right next to burning the flag for me.

2006-04-28 12:35:50 PM
Perhaps "allow" was the wrong word, I guess "be content with" would be better

without a doubt - things like what you mentioned (multilingual signs) are a waste of both time and resources. i don't know about the 'official language' bit, just really have no opinion in that territory.

would your interpretation of 'official' mandate that certain songs can only be sung in english?

Butchering the National Anthem is right next to burning the flag for me.

then i suggest you don't do either.

both are nothing but symbols -- and the very thing they symbolize is the freedom to do both things you described.
