it was recorded over the past week by Latin pop stars including Ivy Queen, Gloria Trevi, Carlos Ponce, Tito "El Bambino," Olga Tanon and the group Aventura.

Shouldn't all the people who come up with the national anthem be from that nation?

I'm not trying to make Canada a new anthem.

staplermofo: I'm not trying to make Canada a new anthem.

Hell, if I could walk over to Canada and siphon off their healthcare for free without contributing towards it, I'd lift my Molsen high and sing "O, Canada."

2006-04-28 09:46:04 AM
well, at least this will give the deadbeat rednecks something new to complain about other than having illegals taking all the jobs

Amen to that.

Posted in another thread:

If we start hearing calls for both an English and Spanish national anthem at every football, baseball, etc. game or any other time the national anthem is sung, I will have a problem.

2006-04-28 09:47:59 AM
Who wants to work on a final solution with me?

C'mon, I've got the cool brown shirts, but you'll need to supply your own jack-boots.

2006-04-28 09:49:28 AM
We lifted that anthem from the English. It was a drinking son. On Anacreon. I'm pretty sure that was done on purpose, people.

2006-04-28 09:50:48 AM
What, you think Puerto Ricans sing the national anthem in English?

2006-04-28 09:51:08 AM
so what? seriously. They're trying to honor the United States and it's principles - let them do it in their native tongue.

2006-04-28 09:52:35 AM
Kazan: They're trying to honor the United States and it's principles

No they're not. Did you read TFA? They have not only changed words, they have also added a rap about the current immigrant situation to the middle of the song.

2006-04-28 09:52:45 AM
I've always thought cock fights were more low-key affairs than to require national anthems be sung.

2006-04-28 09:53:58 AM
Here's a somewhat more in-depth article (pops) from the Washington Post via MSNBC.

Sumpinlikedat: They have not only changed words, they have also added a rap about the current immigrant situation to the middle of the song.

I see no mention of this in TFA.

2006-04-28 09:55:49 AM
Sumpinlikedat

where exactly in TFA does it say that? I cannot find any claim of that. I hear a reference to right wing shills screaming about it being "the illegal immigrant anthem"

as if there aren't any LEGAL spanish speaking immigrants.

/as much as i dislike spanish linguistically get a farking grip people - we're 300 million people, expect some linguistic diversity
//Want to really stop illegal immigration? put pressure on the mexican government to be less corrupt and help them develop an economy!

2006-04-28 09:55:58 AM
OK, this one tips me over the edge. Send 'em all home, let 'em come back legally if they can. But for now? GTFO.

/officially anti-illegal_immigrant now.

Star-Spangled Banner and the War of 1812

It wasn't just a drinking song. It may have been sung as a drinking song, but it was a poem inspired by actual events during the War of 1812 where America solidified its position as a sovereign nation against the British.

2006-04-28 09:58:09 AM
wyclef?????? now that is just funny

A-Glass-Darkly: It wasn't just a drinking song. It may have been sung as a drinking song, but it was a poem inspired by actual events during the War of 1812 where America solidified its position as a sovereign nation against the British.

The music was from a drinking song, not the lyrics.

2006-04-28 09:58:34 AM
From bboy's article:

"An alternate version to be released next month includes a rap in English that never occurred to Francis Scott Key"

The song being released does not have this. It's an alternate version (doesn't say who made/is making this alternate) that has the added rap. The version released today -- the 'official' one, does not.

2006-04-28 09:58:36 AM
Does this mean that Taco Bell food will not be as cheap anymore?

2006-04-28 09:58:56 AM
Now that some of the words have been changed and it's in a different language, America will suffer -65 Patriotism damage and the Mexicans will become our overlords! RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!

You mean you were for illegal immigration before?

Hrm... maybe it was in the other one I read...

Oh, bboy's link is the same one I read.

2006-04-28 09:59:37 AM
MSNBC includes reference to the rap he was talking about

it's probably inappropriate - but it's also not in the version being released today.

Kazan: They're trying to honor the United States and it's principles - let them do it in their native tongue.

On our soil?

This comes down to the whole "If you come to my country, learn the language argument".

I'm not going to move to France and tell them all to learn English...

Jesus, how hard is it for people to understand this?
How much money do we spend on translating documents for 150 languages? Where do you draw the line? I'll tell you where....nowhere. It's one of those equations where appeasement approaches infinity when immigrants demand the US bend to THEIR culture. It's bad enough the directions to my DVD player comes in 8 languages, where every instruction takes twice as long to read because you have to find the English portion. What are you gonna do...print "Stop" 8 times on a stop sign, once for each dominant language.
It's a lose-lose situation.

Just make the national language English and put an end to the madness.

/end rant

2006-04-28 10:00:31 AM
ArcadianRefugee: You mean you were for illegal immigration before?

No, I was largely indifferent to the issue before, honestly.

2006-04-28 10:02:21 AM
Bonkthat_Again: This comes down to the whole "If you come to my country, learn the language argument".

That's pretty much my issue with it, right there. If you were to move to another country in say, Europe or Asia, and did not learn the language, you would be SOL.

In short,

Bonkthat_Again

I am intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Bonkthat_Again: This comes down to the whole "If you come to my country, learn the language argument".

Well, since the U.S. doesn't have an official language, and one of its major territories is Spanish-speaking (Puerto Rico ring a bell?) I do not see your point, other than as misguided xenophobia.

2006-04-28 10:03:18 AM
"The Star-Spangled Banner" is one thing, argue the skeptics, but translating the words sends the opposite message: We are not Americans.

I was gonna say having people that aren't American citizens singing on it gave that message, but I guess language is more important.

Colour... uh oh, now I'm British!

Kazan: seriously people who are all up in arms over them singing the farking anthem in another language

YOu wanna KNOW WHY? It's an identity thing. Americans born here grew up speaking English. When you modify the culture WE were born with, to appease a foreign culture, it pretty much pisses on your culture. The national anthem is representative of that insult to the highest order.

2006-04-28 10:03:40 AM
Bonkthat_Again: Jesus, how hard is it for people to understand this?

Some people don't come with common sense built in.

I got an idea; let's send all those people to Europe and tell them to translate each local anthems into English, and sing it loudly at (insert appropriate sporting event) of their choice.

When the locals ask what they're doing, explain earnestly and seriously in the local language, and say you're just trying to show support for (local country name) and how much you love it.

When you get out of the hospital, write a book about your experiences.

2006-04-28 10:05:04 AM
I still haven't gotten over 99 Luft Ballons being translated into Enlgish.

2006-04-28 10:05:06 AM
Bonkthat_Again

The United States doesn't _have_ an official language. I think they should learn english, but I have no objections to translating the anthem into spanish (or german, or french, or italian, or russian, or japenese) if it's a faithful translation as the version being released today is

I'm not going to move to France and tell them all to learn English...

Most Europeans know english anyway - all the germans, swiss, and austrians i met anyway. Once they detected my accident on my german they would switch to english (i kept speaking german to them until they switched back.

The directions to your DVD player come in eight languages because of the places to which it is shipped.

Seriously your argument went from stupid to almost racism when you started biatching about DVD player instructions

ArcadianRefugee: Well, since the U.S. doesn't have an official language, and one of its major territories is Spanish-speaking (Puerto Rico ring a bell?) I do not see your point, other than as misguided xenophobia.

That's bullshiat. 95% of the 30 somethings in this country weren't exposed to another language in the school system until high school. Don't tell me English isn't the 'Official' language. Look at my rant above. I ask again. Where does the line get drawn? Do we sing the national anthem in English, then Spanish, then Haitian, then Japanese, then French, then ebonics? or do we just sing it in English?

2006-04-28 10:07:12 AM
39.9 million: The estimated Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2003. Hispanics constitute 13.7% of the nation's total population. (This does not include the 3.9 million Hispanic residents of Puerto Rico.)

102.6 million: The projected Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2050. According to this projection, Hispanics would constitute 24% of the nation's total population on that date.

43%: The proportion of New Mexico's population that is Hispanic, highest of any state. California and Texas were next, at 34% each.

Kazan: Seriously your argument went from stupid to almost racism

Woo hoo, the race card! Score! You're a hero.

I'd invoke the "racism" version of Godwin's Law here, but I don't think one has officially been named yet. But you get the idea, right? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Not. A. Farking. Language.

So let me recap for everybody: Adam Kidron of New York-based entertainment company "Urban Box Office" decided to cash in on the immigration debate by releasing a single. As such, all Mexicans everywhere are spitting on the flag and all that is holy, and we should deport them ALL. Immediately. Send those folks back where they come from, back to Africa Mexico!!

It's been said before but ridiculously huge fines for companies hiring illegals is the answer.

Yup - behaving racistly and getting all offended by translating the national anthem is not the answer.

Fining US companies that hire illegals knowingly, and putting pressure on mexico to actually stop being corrupt bastards and develop an economy.

I'm from the South, and I have to agree. But then, the vast majority of people in the South who put that flag up are snaggletoothed rednecks with no brains, soooo...

/take that as you will

How about you sing it in whatever language you freaking feel like?
