Who's out there? SEAL Team 2?

This isn't a mystery. The sound was the Asgard ship breaking up on reentry after SG1 disabled the inertial compensators. (or something like that).

Now all we have to fear are the Replicators.

/Them Ruskies better watch out
//All hail our new Replicator overlords.

Sonic booms, people. No big mystery, except why the military won't tell the truth.

Am I the only one wondering why the US military needs 1 _million_ square miles of ocean for testing weapons?

Oh, "we" have known what these are for a long time.

Even if this wasn't the military itself, or something they knew about, they sure as hell found out as fast as they could, I guarantee you.

291? I thought San Diego was 619.

Steve Fiebing, a Coronado-based Navy spokesman, said the live-fire range on San Clemente Island was inactive April 4. He also said there was no Navy or Marine Corps flight activity in Warning Area 291 on that day that would have caused a sonic boom or a countywide tremor.

I don't believe anything the military says (and neither should you). Just one example: Whenever there is a mass whale beaching and people suspect it is from the Navy testing sonar the Navy spokesman comes out and says "Not only were we NOT testing sonar, but we weren't even in that area that day". Later it always comes out they were testing sonar and they were in that area. So don't believe a thing they say. They are called "military secrets" because they are a secret. Of course they aren't going to admit and detail everything they do on that island. "Yes, and at that time we tested a MOAB and then a secret bigger MOAB, please write all this down".

Walker-

Don't you think a bomb that big would register more distictly on seismographs? Or was this a hushaboom?

And I think the problem with this is that they are being allowed to operate under the guidelines that they know what's best. It's this kind of thinking that could potentially lead to an engineered virus wreaking havoc, a zombie invasion, or whatever your particular doomsday scenario happens to be.

"I would guess it's either an explosion that somebody hasn't told us about or it could have been a meteor coming into the atmosphere," he said. "But it was certainly a big disturbance in the atmosphere."

Isn't it pretty much a given that a sonic boom wouldn't travel that far and wouldn't be that loud across such a large area? I dunno.

HickPrincess: Sonic booms, people. No big mystery, except why the military won't tell the truth.

Sonic booms don't travel that far. It's probably something military/CIA/DARPA/Whatever, and I think there's valid reasons for somethings done by the military to be kept secret.

It was a secret until late in the cold war that our sonar technology was to the point where we were able to track and locate each and every Soviet nuclear missile-carrying sub, and they couldn't track ours. Then John Walker Jr. sold them that info and they wised up and moved their subs up under the arctic ice, costing us an advantage.

When I read stuff like this I usually just let my Sci-Fi trained mind go a little crazy: what if this really was the aliens landing and they are currently in talks with the government?

No, I mean really, what if? Think about it...

Maybe this is a response to Iran's weapons testing?

Iran: We have successfully tested our super fast torpedo, flying boat thingie, etc. America would not stand a chance against us now....

America: We just tested something that caused atmospheric disturbances 120+ miles away. And here's the kicker: YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS. Enjoy your flying boat thingie.

Remember that 'floating frog' academic study? Yeah it was limited and relatively useless, but I wish there were more cool sci-fi like studies which didn't involve the military stepping in and suddenly making it classified...

My guess is that most of it is for security reasons. With a million square miles, you can be pretty sure whatever's being tested/practiced on won't end up outside the zone and into the lap of some idiot on a yacht.

Hah! So true...especially because bombing / tactical strikes inside Iran are becoming headlines with more frequency...nothing says "We can and we just might" like testing something most people can't even imagine or fathom.

I just wish our 'insurance policies' didn't cost gabizillions.

1 million square miles? I'm guessing they do everything from missle ranges to mine clearing exercises and "play war" with other naval ships. Much like any other training area would but much bigger for obvious reasons. Naval warfare is fought over hundreds of miles now, for the most part you can't even see the target you're firing at.

WolfinPHX-

Well, that's 1000x1000. How far does a cruise missile travel? and do you really want the chance of a cruise missile accidentally hitting a fishing boat or some guys yacht?
