They were. Most people think they're a prank, but they were very real. ScreenB-Shoc is the former 'Da Flame', and I talked to him on his forums. He confirmed that while most of the sites were fake, they were very real. The song 'Tru Pimpin' is actually them, most others are fakes.

Apparently you didn't see them with Run-DMC in the '80's. I did. I do own one Beasties CD and it's the only one I can enjoy from beginning to end (The In Sound from Way Out). They are amazing musicians, but I think their rap is redundant and annoying (as with most rap acts today).
