LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD...SHHH

Since you have been tipped off assign detectives to watch each kid 24/7. They had even been given the day it was to happen.

"The five boys, ranging in age from 16 to 18, were arrested Thursday, just hours before they planned to shoot fellow students and employees at the school,"

Stop the kids before they arrive to school

And maybe they start their rampage at the bus stop.

and you will know if they were going to follow through with the conspiracy.

You don't 'know' whether they were going to follow through until there is the running and screaming and shooting. Then it is far too late.

Gah! Only if they make it two four-lane duplexes going each way - that way the guy in the left lane who just realized his exit's coming up in 500 feet only has to cut across four lanes of traffic to get to it.

The media knows exactly what it's doing with its incessant poking and hinting towards violent video games as a cause of violence. When people hear things in the media enough, they start to believe that they are true, whether or not they are. I believe that, eventually, all this BS could very well lead to the stamping out of violent video games. The media absolutely does have this power of command by suggestion over societies such as ours.

AKA Joker: What do you think about alternate schooling for problem children? I believe children that bully lack structure and social tolerance. Both of these can be given to them but not in a public school environment. Thoughts?

Wouldn't really work: just concentrates all the troublemakers in one location, and you *know* that due to stupid test-based funding rules, that one school would become underfunded and a complete waste--just a ground for anarchy. I'm pretty sure I saw an anime' once with just such a....oh, hey. Akira. Watch the first part.

What's really required is, essentially, a tyranny for a time, forcing people to take responsibility for their actions. This will never happen, though.

The only stopgap that I can see is to build some kind of certification program for school administrators, and fund the department of education as well as the military is funded. Then perhaps we could get some results.

That's true but you have to remember that kids spend the 12 most influential years of their lives with this. If those years a filled with hate, violence, and loathing what kind of person does that child become?

My ex's brother went to one such "alternate schools" for problem children a few years ago. He had some issues where he was far too smart, and emotionally unable to develop... As a result, he had serious issues with any authority figure who wasn't his mom. (A 5 foot nothin' sweet lil' lady, who he obeyed to the LETTER without question, despite his being over 6 feet tall and 300 lbs.)

They sent him to a school in upstate NY, if I recall the locale correctly. Once there, they barred him from speaking to his parents, siblings, or any of his old friends. They hit him when he questioned things (And he was never violent, just liked knowing WHY), told him he was too fat and would feed him insanely small portions of food (half a small chicken cutlet, a glass of water, and MAYBE some veggies), and neglected to actually TEACH him anything.

He was finally able to talk to his mom, and told her what was going on. This sweet little woman has 4 children, and she knows how to raise hell... And she did. Alternative schooling is a great theory, but it needs to be monitored carefully, and the people need to respect the students and not treat them all with violence, cruelty, and neglect.

HAL_lives: See this is the problem with today's kids, they got no stickability, no follow through, no gumption, damn in my day we just loaded up a gym sock full of bar soap and got a gunny sack ( this was before onions were stylish by the way) and waited for a "bully" to come around a corner , sack'em and rack'em and run him up a flag pole. This tended to inspire an attitude adjustment.
Kids today, little crybaby sad sacks. Killing your oppressor is no where near as satisfying as seeing the anxiety in their eyes as they wondered, "was it you?"

That actually happened to one of the supervisors at the postal service when I was working there. Got the farker just before he entered the elevator, beat him up all the way to the top and ran like hell. I wasn't involved (and I don't know who did it), but that guy sure had it coming.

I guess it's obvious to say that teens live in a very small world. All they focus on is the school social scene. I tried to tell my kids that if after you graduate and you still hang out with the same people from school its probably because you havent done squat with your life.

Agreed but just like criminals (lets call them what they are or will become) they have to be removed from the general public because they endanger the whole. I bet I could get a non-profit started that could fund the alternate schooling. Think about how many people got bullied badly in school and would give money not to let it happen to others (gets out check book).

What's really required is, essentially, a tyranny for a time, forcing people to take responsibility for their actions. This will never happen, though.

I agree completely.

The only stopgap that I can see is to build some kind of certification program for school administrators, and fund the department of education as well as the military is funded. Then perhaps we could get some results.

Certification is nice but if they do not have the authority to govern the school as they see fit then there will be no improvement.

I know that through my school years that administrators and teachers witnessed bullying and did nothing about it. Maybe well placed NARCs could rat out bullying like they do drugs? (I know a 25 year old girl who looks like she's 16).

Forgot to include that, sorry. ^^;

Yeah, the problem is mostly these legislated policies. Case of waaaaay too many cooks. The idiot general public gets involved, and you end up with 'zero tolerance!' because someone makes an emotional 'think of the children!' arguement...

I'm getting slightly disjointed [ low blood sugar just before lunch... ], but my basic point is this: The current system is broken beyond repair, and the only 'fix' is to institute something completely new.

"Alternative schooling" is just code-word for contracted child-abuse. Go read some of the horror stories online. Look up dicipline camps, boot camps, etc. Parents pay to send their out-of-control children away to be physically, sexually, and psychologically abused for months in hopes that they will be cured.

Havent played COD online in a while. The old lady says I spend too much time on the computer. I did have a couple of favorite servers that are on the tip of my tongue but I cant remember. I did enjoy Carentan 24/7 and the bigger servers that could handle 40+ players. The more the merrier.

If you read some of my later posts you can see that I stated the need for a non-profit entity to fund and run the schools. These groups could be monitored by state education officals but would not be funded nor run by the state (kinda like day care). Any parent that sends their child (no matter how bad) off to a school without checking it out and hoping it will "cure" them is part of the problem.

"Four suspects were arrested at their homes, two as early as 12:30 a.m."
Mere hours....well about 12 hours to be more accurate. And one of the kids was arrested at the school Thursday afternoon. Just hours AFTER he was supposed to shoot up the school. They had specific targets and I would assume, being 16-18, that they probably did not ride the bus...although the short bus would be appropriate. If everyone is so adament that they were going to follow through with the plan and shoot up the place between noon and one then arresting them as they entered school property in the morning with the guns would solidify the case against them.

The best cure for all that high school angst is the 10, or even better, the 20 year reunion. Popular girls all looked rode hard and put away wet, football stars were bald and fat; it was great therapy for 4 years sitting in the back of the room reading sci-fi. Too bad we can't have a time machine for the emos; cheer up, see, they all turn out like THIS. Course, you got to live that long. Had a teacher that said all school problems could be solved by letting each teacher chose one and the janitor chose 5 students to expel. Kick 'em down the road, he said. Course, he meant to the edge of town, like the Vegas Sheriff's dept used to do until the ACLU came to town. Didn't care, he said. Get 'em outta here.
