Notice how revenue has grown, despite the decreased reliance on popups and popunders.

And exploding CPM for Targeted (google & overture) ads, along with the increased acceptance by many sites to use Pop-ups and Interstitial ads.

Looks amusing but they advertise Overture if you search for it in Google

Same thing if you search for adsense on Yahoo.

Neither appear to be affiliate links. Interesting...

They are still used and have a higher CPM than your standard banners. Especially on sites that have many impressions but not many uniques and, well, nobody clicks on the banners.

shoot the duck for a free ipod?

Dude, I personally know a guy who has this friend who signed up for one of those things and got a free house or something. It really worked. And he gets like $5000 a WEEK in commissions. HE works from home and all he has to do is manage other people, and he told me how I could get in on all it.

No, seriously, my MacBook Pro has been shipped. Those things actually work. And if more Internet advertising worked that way, I'd gladly participate. My eye time is valuable -- give me something in return and you can borrow my consideration (and possibly even earn a purchase) for a brief moment in time. Or, just keep shouting with popups and flashing banners, and you'll keep blending into the background static.

I'll sign up, but only if I get a P-P-P-Powerbook.

They do work, but you have to be smart and attentive to avoid spam and unwanted charges. Most people aren't attentive enough, so they make money.

As for the ads, they seem affiliate to me. Right-clicking an Overture one on Google, I got http://www.google.com/url?sa=l&ai=BTbtO_TtIRPCXCYa6qQLZg9z2Aoyu3AmAxeSxAY7rqAX gpxIIABABGAFIpTlQq5K26v3_____AZgBj4kDyAEBlQIaH0oK&q=http://clickserve.cc-dt.co m/link/click%3Flid%3D43000000000808373

The reason that online ad revenues are up is clearly the declining approval ratings of President Bush. Now, a record number of people are willing to knock him out in a flash game for a chance to win a free ringtone.

Hurm, you wouldn't think folks could afford all that stuff, on top of bank loans for homes and suv's and new cars and school and then cable tv and cell phones and ipods... what with gas prices being high and everyone moaning about it... I guess people just like to belly ache and feel that brief respite from the boredom of their work a day lives. Hmmmmm, cooooouuuuld beeeeee!

True, but Adblock slows down Firefox like a mother, especially if you have Filterset. I didn't realize it until I disabled Adblock one day, and my browsing was instantaneous, especially on really long pages (like Fark flamewars). I still keep Adblock on because I've grown accustomed to how my favorite pages are displayed without ads, but it is a significant hit in performance.

I'm one of the cheap bastards that goes for high search engine ranking through content.

Paid placement is good, but personally I pick from the organic search results first.

Frankly, when I'm surfing the internet (either for school purposes or to avoid school work, as I'm doing right now) I love playing those games. I'm the best durn cattle roper in the library (although I'm sure it has a negative effect on my grades). I don't believe all that stuff about free ringtones and whatnot, though. I just like satisfaction that comes from helping W. pump - it - up.

Two sure-things when there's a discussion on Fark about online advertising:
1. Almost immediately, people will begin posting how awesome they are because they never see ads online.
2. Those same people are hardly ever TFers, and are basically freeloaders, not supporting Fark through either of its two main revenue sources.

Hypocracy sure is fun. "I hate advertising, but give me my free content!"

"I hate advertising, but give me my free content!"

If I'm never going to click on the ads anyway, why bother looking at them?

2006-04-21 02:09:28 AM
Crazy Chris The Nightmare Man, when's the last time you clicked on a TV ad or a newspaper ad?

Advertisers aren't just counting on people clicking. If you learn from an ad that Dr. Pepper has a new flavor, Dr. Pepper is happy whether you click or not.
By simply seeing an online ad, you're contributing to the advertiser's goals. And in the process, your ad view (impression) is helping to pay for the Web site's operation.

2006-04-21 02:23:41 AM
fark online ads. Google turned our site down. Something about "copyrighted material." Those asses. Pirates have bills to pay as well!

Hypocracy sure is fun. "I hate advertising, but give me my free content!"

I fail to see how those two statements contradict each other, that being a key part of hypocracy.

Popups are evil. Popunders are slightly less evil, but still crappy. Fortunately I never see any of 'em, because like many people here I use Mozilla + Adblock + Noscript. I will control how many browser windows are open, thank you very much.

As for in-page ads or banners, I let about half of 'em slide because sometimes they have information I might be interested in. Anything from doubleclick, pfft, blocked in a heartbeat, but I haven't blocked any of the banners at Penny Arcade. Well, except for the flash ones. For some reason flash banners strike me as extraordinarily offensive, and not just the ones that include sound. (Though thank God that's a trend that died out) If you really think you need all that flash can do in order to properly express why I need your product, then I don't need your product.

Keep sidebar ads, banner ads, and to some lesser extent inline ads. F%$# you and your popups and popunders.

Web ads are up, because they are f*ing effective, you get better results with 5% of what you would spend in a newspaper, or other media

As a webmaster i am still waiting for the "adblock = no donut for you" application, and block all users that do not display ads

what is so great about not watching ads, anyway? is like a secret club for it? you get more chicks or what?

No, some people remember when the internet wasn't full of ads and just want the pure content without the flashy ads. Anyone ever serfed the internet through Telnet? no ads!
