On top of that, Jesus came out of the tomb and saw his shadow, so now we get six more weeks of winter.

"One of those released was Patrick Alan Selepak, who is now charged with killing three people after he was wrongly freed."

Jeebus, you think Gov. Mike Dukakis would've learned his lessons by now about paroling convicts ...

"One of those released was Patrick Alan Selepak, who is now charged with killing three people after he was wrongly freed."

So..is the corrections department going to get arrested, since they're accomplices to murder?

How it happened:

"Crucifixion?"
(nods)
"Very good, line on the left, one cross each.... Crucifixion?"
"No, Freedom."
"Pardon?"
"Freedom. They said I hadn't done anything wrong so I could go free and live on an island somewhere."

/from memory, sorry aboot mistakes.

Of the 41 offenders mistakenly released over a one-year period, 25 are back in custody, including Selepak. Seven were allowed to remain on parole, seven were discharged from parole supervision, one is dead and one remains at large.

Fortyone mistakenly released and one still at large? He must have been the only one to make the UM football team.

For those who dont live in michigan and haven't heard about selepak, he strangled a pregnant woman and tortured her husband for a day or so before finally killing him by injecting bleach into his veins with a syringe, then killed another guy who took him and his girlfriend in. He's one sick fark.

/I blames teh democrats

It kind of depends on who you talk to and/or where you talk to people. I'd say that most people in the Lower Peninsula use the term Michiganian. I can't say for the U.P. because that is a strange crazy place where the laws of man have no meaning (But those pasties are crazy delicious). The term Michigander was popular in years past, but most people stopped using that term when they realized how dumb it was.

2006-04-18 10:57:22 PM
mtylerjr I live in the Lower Peninsula and we say Michigander, though I suppose technically it's Michiganian. But I think that sounds stupid. People in the UP are Yoopers and they call us trolls. People in West Michigan are called "fundies."

/born and raised in West Michigan
//not a fundie

scumbucket:

With a name like Selepak it got to be up to no good.

Should have made Jam.

2006-04-18 11:12:44 PM
What are people called, who live in michigan, anyway?

If you live in the upper peninsula, you're a "Yooper" (from "U.P.")

If you live in the lower, you'tr a "Troll" (there's a bridge between the two and you live under it).

These days though, if you live here, you're prob'ly called "unemployed".

2006-04-18 11:15:22 PM
mtylerjr, idk, some of em are called yoopers, the rest, well, theres a lake between me and them, so it doesnt much matter.

Zeppo is pretty close with those names, but anywhere within about 50 miles of Ann Arbor I would call Yuppie. That or arsehole.

We always said "Michigander" until recently.

Although we might as well call ourselves "pseudo-Canadians" for how close we are to them, both politically and culturally.

(Except for the western side of the state, which is all the Dutch people who were so outrageously white and conservative that the other Dutch couldn't stand them and kicked them out, so they moved to Michigan to make furniture and Amway.)

BTW-- Anybody who votes for DeVoss for governor hasn't been to Grand Rapids to see the whites-only, upper class tyranny of the DeVoss family. These are people who think that poor people are poor because they don't know how to invest their money in the right properties. A real "let them eat cake" crowd.

I second Holly_Wight on the DeVos issue. If he gets elected I'm defecting to Wisconsin. Oddly enough, what she says about the Dutch in West Michigan is almost word-for-word how I describe it to people who haven't had the pleasure of growing up over here. I grew up a street over from where DeVos did, his great-aunt (not by blood, she was an awesome old woman) was my neighbor. Even his family thinks he's tight-fisted.

We're a pretty diverse state. Dearborn is the largest Arabic community in North America right now. Sterling Heights is a bastion of Chaldeans (Catholic Arabs). Detroit is mostly black, but has an astounding number of white people who live there and THINK they're black. Several towns in Michigan have large Asian populations (Okemos is one), and out in the boondocks of the thumb you may find some of the most inbred hicks on Earth living close to several retired hippies, the occasional sasquatch, and plenty of UFOs and strange goings-on.

The U.P. is another country within our state. Fascinating place. Odd people. Lots of Euchre and snow. Driving through the U.P. looks like this:

trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, moose crossing sign, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, smoked salmon shack, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, trees, snowmobile/moose crossing sign, trees, trees, trees, trees, moose crossing sign, trees, trees...

...and so on. Eventually, you might be able to add an "outpost general store" to that run, if you drive far enough.

On the subject of West Michigan...

Hope College grad... it blew my mind how a community that is 50% latino can still be so unbeleivably stereotypically WHITE.

If you want to see what West Michigan is like, do an GIS for "Holland Tulip Festival"

I too am from Michigan, lower peninsula, near Flint. The whole Selepak thing was big news around here for a few weeks - him and his lovely also knocked off a Dunham's in Flint in broad daylight while they were on run. They were finally caught in Owosso, which is the town I work in, in the pickup of the last guy they murdered. Oh, and his body was in back. Psychos.

Holly_Wight: Love your description of the UP! I assume you have traveled down Highway 2...did that last year on the way back from Minnesota. It was scary boring.

Michiganders. We don't call ourselves trolls, because no one includes the UP when considering Michigan. You think Michigan and think only of the LP.

2006-04-19 02:10:43 PM
Patrick is my uncle. That is all. (Oh, and I was in the Detroit News too!)

2006-04-19 09:30:16 PM
I really hate the term Michigander. It's not like we're geese! I prefer Michiganian but that just doesn't roll off the tongue so easily. I don't mind being called a troll, I think it's unique to Michigan. I wonder whay Yoopers called us trolls before the bridge was built. LP'ers? Loopers? Michiganites isn't too bad, though it sounds like some sort of mineral.

/never been to the UP
//like to correct that this summer
