(UPI)   Gas stations installing TVs on pumps so drivers can watch news and weather as they fill up, although at $3 a gallon, it would probably be more appropriate to show selected scenes from "Deliverance" and "Midnight Express"   (washtimes.com) divider line 132

They've had that at one of the Exxon gas stations in Winchester for years.

2006-04-18 12:24:36 PM
Esso in Canada has been doing this for some time now. Very annoyinng. Cost's $40 to fill my tank up. And the News cycles through like 5 times. Get's annoying after the 3rd time.

2006-04-18 12:26:36 PM
yeah i hate those things. can't hit the "mute" button fast enough.

2006-04-18 12:27:53 PM
The only gas station that did that in my area went out of business 2 or 3 years ago.
It was annoying.

Not submitter here, but I would suggest you think about the deeper meaning of the headline. Have you ever seen "Deliverance," for example?

"Thank you, Ted. That was the joke."

"Oil, I wish I could quit you."

"Brought to you by ExxonMobil. Now, bend over."

How about "Wag the Dog?"

Maybe "Syriana?"

No, no no, I know... "The Money Pit"

For those of us who purchase the more expensive 93 octane fuel, there should be an option to watch hard-core lesbian porn on those.

It would help counter the gay sex ass raping from the oil execs that I experience while I pay for the fuel when I am done.

When I lived in New Orleans and traveled a lot, a station in Hattiesburg, MS with this was one of my regular stops. And that was about six years ago.

2006-04-18 02:55:12 PM
HAHA! Gas prices are high!

2006-04-18 02:55:34 PM
What does submitter have against Pulp Fiction?

2006-04-18 02:55:38 PM
Luckily, none of the gas stations have them here. I really don't see much use for them other than distract you from the price on the pump. You may accidently buy more gas than intended if your distracted.

Seen those. If you could change the channel they might be okay, if your into watching tv for 3 minutes at a time.

2006-04-18 02:56:52 PM
Give the masses entertainment, and they'll stop complaining about their pathetic lives!

2006-04-18 02:57:09 PM
Gosh, I wonder where the money to pay for making the gas station all fancy will come from?

/bend over

They've been doing this in LA, for over 10 years. I remember seeing footage from the OJ trial, of people watching the trial, at gas stations.

Wasn't there a thread about how gas stations are going broke? Seems like a wasteful expenditure to put TV's and whatnot on the pumps.

2006-04-18 02:58:54 PM
The headline was long, but satisfying. Like my penis.

2006-04-18 02:58:56 PM
They should just show all the azz kicking scenes from all of chuck norris's movies/shows.

2006-04-18 02:59:00 PM
We're such sheep

2006-04-18 02:59:03 PM
About the only good thing from these oil prices is the possibility that it'll spur real movement on developing other energy sources.

Though I don't think it's enough yet. We'll probably need rioting in the streets before we stop sucking on the petroleum teat.

2006-04-18 02:59:24 PM
The gas station I use (cheapest in town, which isn't saying much) has had these for a few months now. But they dont show news or 'programming'. They show ads for businesses around the county.

The past couple of weeks it has been tax filing companies and a couple traffic lawyers. Now that 'tax day' has passed, I wonder what'll take their place.

Damn sad enough that gas is so high - and I know that the stations themselves dont exactly make 'major bank' on gas sales, even when prices go up, but bringing in more income by showing commercials to people pumping gas is just lame.

2006-04-18 02:59:36 PM
yeah, I saw this about a year ago.

Think they'll focus much on mid-east conflict and rising gas prices in the news?

fish500

My god, that man's chin looks like it's oozing off of his face. :(

2006-04-18 02:59:54 PM
...and now that I think of it, something like that would give a whole new meaning to the word "gas pump".

2006-04-18 03:02:30 PM
Why don't they show how energy funds are doing? Then everytime some flathead fills up his SUV, he can see exactly how much money I'm making?

2006-04-18 03:03:19 PM
Pumping $10 at a time doesn't allow for much TV watching.
/Nice try though.

2006-04-18 03:05:16 PM
They are putting subliminal messages in our head.
"Oil is good, depend on it."
"We really care about you. Please don't demand a congressional investigation"

Then right as the pump shuts off
"BAHAHAHAHA! Sucker!"

2006-04-18 03:05:26 PM
Even in Green Bay (i.e. East Jesus, Nevada), we've had them for over 8 years. Thanks, Ric Romero, for the breaking news.

2006-04-18 03:05:45 PM
wait wait wait....

people get out of their cars when they get gas???

2006-04-18 03:06:05 PM
Cue pic of creepy kid panjo player from Deliverance.

2006-04-18 03:06:18 PM
Here's a question. If, say, a brazillion people start to boycott the use of oil (no gasoline, no plastic products, whatever)....then wouldn't the oil companies be more likely to increase costs to "recoup their projected budgets" rather than lower prices because of decreased demand? It's what I imagine corporations doing more and more.

Blame something else and raise prices. It's awful.

What about Scatman Crothers taking an axe in the gut in "The Shining?"

2006-04-18 03:06:41 PM
I would just like to take a moment to say that that was a very funny headline.
Yes.
Yes it was.
You may stamp it as "ANGEL APPROVED".

/not because I have a high opinion of my opinion
//just cus it was funny

Even little old Greensboro has had them for quite some time now; I think i remember seeing them in 2000 or so.

They make me happy. I don't mind the anal raping I'm receiving while filling the tank as long as I can hear the news!

2006-04-18 03:08:15 PM
Old news in Cali.

=============================================

Bingo. I used to work at a gas station and you'd be surprised how many folks get the pump going and take on another task, only to come back to find they spent $10 - $15 more than they had intended. You'd get the occasional bucket head who'd try to blame his Attention Deficit Disorder on me, the attendant, and demand a refund of the difference. My response was normally, "I can take the money out of my drawer if you can take the exact amount of gas out of your car".

if gas hits 3.oo a gallon there should be a national strike.

I keep bugging my dentist to put a flatscreen on the ceiling above the chair so i have something to watch when they're cleaning my teeth. That would rock.

/I'm from Jersey. We don't have to pump our gas. By law.

2006-04-18 03:13:36 PM
The prices are lower at the stations that have these, due to ad money influx, right?

2006-04-18 03:13:49 PM

If? welcome to last week...

Come on are you people really that gulliable?

Gas stations installing TVs on pumps so drivers can watch news and weather

"news and weather" will quickly transform into ads and more ads. Come on people get a clue. It will first be news and weather mostly so there is no uproar but will change to more and more ads.

Do some of you every learn? Hey look after putting a few couple things on the outfield fence in baseball, now the whole wall is covered in ads. How many times can some be fooled?

2006-04-18 03:14:40 PM
I thought we recently had an article on here about how gas stations are struggling to get by and gas prices aren't their fault. How the hell can they afford 17 inch TV's?
