The smart ones all live in the suburbs. Only an idiot would actually live in socialist downtown.

I live in Seattle so I'm really getting a kick out of all these replies...

Submitter is confusing Expresso Drinks with coffee. a cup of Starbuck's Coffee cost $1.89, approximate $0.10 more than a similar size at the Gas Station. IMHO, it's more than $0.10 better.

When I have the choice between burnt, overbrewed coffee; and warm, brownish water I'll take the former for $0.10 more every time.

Or you could just make your own. That would be the smart thing.

Is this indicating the number of college students graduating in Seattle, or the number of college graduates that we are importing from other countries?

I don't know much about Seattle, but I do know San Francisco pretty well. It's extremely tough to raise a family in San Francisco. If your family income is below a quarter mil, it becomes even harder. The public schools are abominable (with one laudable exception at the high school level). The housing prices are downright scary - a million dollars for a small family home in a neighborhood where your kids won't get shot at.

No wonder people leave when they have children. I have a lot of friends in SF, and they stay until they have children. Then they move out to the East Bay (Walnut Creek, Orinda, Danville, even Livermore).

If we build new highways, it'll only encourage the current population of asshats to stay and invite new asshats.

This way we keep the barrier of entry high so that only the truly worthy, deserving, and patient folk can stay.

And I have no problem paying for quality.

/moving out of downtown in 1.5 weeks
//not a hypocrite, just going to east side

I've always wanted to move to Seattle. When I visited it made quite the impression upon me.

I hear submitter is one of those pinko lefties living in a downtown condo, laughing all the way to the bank as property values soar, but that could be idle speculation, rumor, and innuendo.

Don't come to Seattle. It rains all the time, our sports teams are a constant source of angst, and our wildlife will attack you. No, seriously. A bird has been repeatedly wing-thumping the windows of my house for the last four days. I think it's a terrorist.

2006-04-10 04:40:38 PM
What makes them smart is that they got you to pay $5 for a cup of coffee.

KickahaOta: A bird has been repeatedly wing-thumping the windows of my house for the last four days. I think it's a terrorist.

First it's a bird into a window. Next thing you know, they'll be crashing planes into buildings.

When the day comes that I bolt from Wisconsin- and I really will have little reason to stay when my parents hightail it to Florida- the Pac Northwest is likely where I'm headed.

Ideal location: 30 miles or less from either Vancouver, Seattle, Portland or San Francisco. But not the actual cities. Say: Half Moon Bay, CA; Beaverton, OR; Everett, WA; or Brackendale, BC. Close to, but not actually IN.

2006-04-10 06:30:12 PM
Gosling: great, and you too can contribute to the gridlock and sprawl. Enjoy the commute.

I hear Casino Road in South Everett has some cheap housing.

2006-04-10 06:40:09 PM
There are businesses inside those outlying cities, you know. (And seeing as I'd be moving FROM a city which is coming down with Sprawl Syndrome, as Watertown's getting it from both Madison and Milwaukee...)

2006-04-10 06:52:53 PM
Yep, those gun control laws sure seem to be working....

Yeah, I'd feel much safer if everyone were packing, like in New Orleans

AND we have TWO major single-use sports stadiums right next to each other. One of them the voters voted NOT to build. So our elected representatives in the state legislature, who apparently represent Paul Allen, wrote a one-time law giving the county the authority to build it anyway. Thanks, Paul! Hope you enjoy your luxury viewing box! I'm certainly enjoying paying for it, not to mention sitting in the luxury traffic jams all during Mariners season.

"But they also spell trouble for some cities, especially those in the Northeast and Midwest, that have fallen behind the South and West in attracting highly educated workers."

The reason Boston can't attract educated workers is because it's too damn expensive, even for someone with a degree.

Hell, we just passed a health plan that will force you to pay $300 a month for insurance if you don't have any. I live in Malden, where a studio apartmens rent begins at $725 a month, if you're lucky.

2006-04-10 07:10:31 PM
I live in Seattle. The city may be well-educated but a majority of people become severely retarded as soon as they get behind the wheel of a car. It's mindboggling how lousy the drivers are here; especially on the freeways.

/Would legalize road-rage. Anybody "sitting on their arse" in the fast lane would be fair game.
//Consider it a form of natural selection.

2006-04-10 07:10:56 PM
What's really interesting is that while the article was in a Seattle, WA online publication, they never referenced any cities from WA State. They referenced Washington DC. Espresso?

*whistles innocently*

What are you, some sort of college graduate? You and your 'science' can go back to where you belong. Canada.

Having a Bachelor's degree does not a smart person make. Probably 85% of my graduating class at DePauw in Indiana is borderline retarded and they all have their degrees.

It's what you do with the degree that makes you intelligent.

I just interviewed with Microsoft a few weeks ago, and I was absolutely amazed by the Seattle/Redmond area. Seattle is a damn nice city, plus the surrounding area is amazing (the mountains, etc...). The only weird thing I noticed was that everybody drove wickedly slow (as in going 50ish in a 60 zone). Is this normal for you west coast folk, or it is just me being from New York (where a 65 mph limit really means 85)?

2006-04-10 07:13:02 PM
Submitter got it right on. People in Seattle don't blink at dropping $5 at a Starbucks once, twice or three times a day.

But pay a couple of bucks on a toll road or tax to build sorely needed roadways?!?!?! Forget it!

Admittedly, there's only so much land to build roads on in Seattle. But the moran who thought two through lanes on I-5 through downtown Seattle would be sufficient should be shot.

Now, there's a roadway called the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Many think it'll fall like a house of cards at any moment, especially during an earthquake.

But the fine folks in Seattle don't want a tunnel built because it will cost money.

Keep buying Starbucks, Seattle. You'll always be thought of as a second-rate city because of your politics and mentality.

Bon_Scott - The city may be well-educated but a majority of people become severely retarded as soon as they get behind the wheel of a car

Well educated does not mean they have common sense or superior motor skills.

I love how a discussion about Seattle turns into Weaver95 spinning gun control ;-)

You need to work for FoxNews or somthing.

I once saw them spin an increase in truck driving school applicants into a possible terror attack.

I guess what I am trying to say is, it seems that no matter what the discussion, you feel a need to turn it into a political debate.

*Actual* political news stories get posted to Fark often enough that creating the debate in non-relevant threads is rather unnecesary.

2006-04-10 07:15:41 PM
Well educated does not mean they have common sense or superior motor skills.

Agreed. That was my point.

2006-04-10 07:16:11 PM
Weaver, you made the same idiotic comment in the first thread about the Capitol Hill shooting. I do not know where you got the idea that Washington has strict gun control laws. I suspect you made it up. In fact, Washington has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the country. My husband very quickly and easily got a concealed carry license.

It's funny. Every so often you start to sound smart. Then you change my mind again.

LessO2: But the moran who thought two through lanes on I-5 through downtown Seattle would be sufficient should be shot.

A civil engineer grossly out of touch with reality, I imagine.

Bon_Scott:

I was going to say the same thing. I don't understand what it is here about people blocking intersections or stopping on railroad tracks. On Sunday, it took me 30 minutes to drive 6 miles.

2006-04-10 07:17:16 PM
KickahaOta: A bird has been repeatedly wing-thumping the windows of my house for the last four days.

Buy yourself a pellet gun. Their cheap, easy, and a great stress reliever.

2006-04-10 07:17:50 PM
Yes, the locals drive like retards and the people who design our roads are also apparently retarded. It's my biggest pet peeve of the area. I wish people would drive more aggressively, learn to turn left without the stupid little green arrow, and if they really need to drive slowly do it in the right lane.

Seattle is the most provincial and feckless big city I've ever lived in, hands down.

Education does not equal intelligence.

2006-04-10 07:19:59 PM
"Molly Wankel, who has a doctorate in educational administration..." anyone else read that as 'school counselor'? Way to go with the 'educational administration' there.

You can get a f***ing doctorate in garbage collection nowadays. Apparently 'most educated' equates to 'largest percentage of people with bullsh** degrees.'

2006-04-10 07:20:17 PM
Yeah, the submitter is definately a moran. If you tried really, really hard, you could *probably* find a cup of coffee (some kind of uber-latte, really) for $5. But $5 certainly isn't the average price.

Or you could just make your own. That would be the smart thing.

Or you could just STFU and GBTW since you apparently don't know a hell of a lot about Seattle Culture. Going out for a cup of coffee is much more than "just a cup of coffe". Its an opportunity to socialize, get out of the office/house, and enjoy the day.

2006-04-10 07:21:18 PM
LordZorch: Only an idiot would actually live in socialist downtown.

Whatever, dude.

And I make my own coffee, never go to coffee shops. The coffee here sucks ass anyways.

Conveniently ignoring the fact the shooter procured his firepower in red-state Montana

Haha, alright, I'll go there:

You know what I notice about this? The way each of those very well-educated cities is, to a greater or lesser degree (especially Austin), a tiny bubble of liberalism in a sea of deep red. Admittedly, the red is more purple in Washington, but the blue is really Dean-tastic blue, with some serious Green tint.

I'm not going to make any overt statement about what this means here; you can take it as you like. People who live in those towns and subscribe to a more liberal philosophy will undoubtedly take it as support for their own intellectual superiority, while those who are more traditionally-minded will almost certainly blame it on either a liberal media bias in reporting, or the liberal academic agenda poisoning the minds of our intelligent youth.

/Personally I think a strong correlation between high intelligence and strong education, and adaptive, non-traditional politics speaks for itself. But what do I know?
//I ain't sayin' that most Dems aren't dumb too, 'cause they are

2006-04-10 07:24:33 PM
The people over here drive like goddamned idiots. No one has anywhere to go or anything to do. I-5, I-405 and the 520 are parking lots between the hours of 5am and 9am and again between 4pm and 7pm...no one complains because "it is the way things are and always have been".

If everyone out here is so farking smart, how come no one knows how to merge properly? Or how a 4 way stop works? Or that when the light is green it means you goooooooooo. Basic shiat, people.

/ Yes I know everyone complains about drivers everywhere
// Actually misses Michigan lunatic drivers
/// And driving 85mph down I-696 and getting passed/honked at/yelled at for going slow
