The US and UK have already offerred as much, with Pakistan's blessing -- but India doesn't want to be monitored because of the small matter of its own human rights abuses in the region. The shameful bit is that with some investment almost all factory tasks can be near completely automated... however 3rd world labour is currently cheaper. Although that might change if you've got to kit your workforce in radiation suits to get a decent days work done.

Named: I take offense to that. While we do arguably exploit the resources of less developed nations and definitely build factories there because land and labor is cheap, we also end up increasing the total wealth in areas that we have our factories in. Also the reason the west is wealthy is that it is an advanced society that has an abundance of land and capital in comparison to human labor, and the technology to make more efficient use of those resources. Yes we do move industry offshore because it is cheaper, but those same industries provide jobs and wealth that those poorer countries would not have otherwise. And while $0.50 or so a day might not be anywhere near American standards, that can be a living wage in a lot of less developed countries. Indeed, increasing wages to American levels would likely do more harm than good, as it would cause inflation that would hurt everybody that does not have a factory job.

And please, i know what I just said was an open invitation for it, but lets not have a 200+ post economics/social policy flame war. I couldn't deal with it today.
