Worthless without the pics...

2006-04-08 12:34:34 AM
The dime/penny apparently started its numismatic life as a silver-colored dime

As opposed to all those purple dimes

2006-04-08 12:55:24 AM
Is that anything like the value of an ace in blackjack?

2006-04-08 02:27:43 AM
Why is it that I foresee this turning out to be one of those gag coins?
Hollowed out penny fits a dime in one side... worthless trash

2006-04-08 02:29:02 AM
yeah useless w/o a pic.

however this is the kind of thing that people pay hella bucks for if it's real.

2006-04-08 02:29:46 AM
Sounds to me like what we have here is a trickster witch-dime!

2006-04-08 02:29:55 AM
its been said before, and certainly will be said again, I wanna see the damn coin.

2006-04-08 02:30:11 AM
It's obviously not "real" other then being a regular dime stamped with a penny image.

The guy probably made it in his basement.

How is it possible? Do they make pennies and dimes at the same mint, with the same equipment?

2006-04-08 02:33:22 AM
Simple- a dime blank somehow made it into the penny stamper machine. Mint errors like this are quite valuable because of their rarity.

Yep, they make them at the same place with the same equipment.

DIY "hybrid" coins: stack a dime on a penny on a train track...retrieve after train has passed.

why are coin mess ups worth so much money?

Because there are many people who obsessively collect coins.

When I first heard "dime/penny hybrid," I started imagining a dime and a penny merging together in an organic, Cronenbergian bond.

It's not news, it's...

...effing boring

2006-04-08 02:50:54 AM
It couldn't have minted twice as the article says it clearly was a dime before the penny parts were stamped in like one of those coin machine things. To my knowledge they don't feed original coins to be stamped again at the mint. If anything it would have been melted first.

BTW anyone seen those steel wheat pennies from the 40s. My great grandmother gave me a bunch of them back when I was 8 and I still got them. Not worth much, but there cool to fool people with.

As far as I know, they were made of steel because copper was in high demand for the war or something?

Anyway, if the mint ever farks up, whatever comes out is usually worth a ton!

I once got a quarter as change from a Coke machine that had a head on both sides. I just about crapped myself until close inspection revealed it to be made from two different quarters... like the ones you can buy from the good old Johnson Smith Company Catalog

Still, someone wasted a nearly $8 trick coin to buy part of a Coke... Ha, ha!

It got plenty of use flipping for who was going to buy coffee with the guys out on the plant floor! ;-)

Boring

However, this is about the only thread where "I work for..." would still be funny and appropriate

My memory is telling me to laugh at this headline, but cannot tell me why...........something to do with money and Taco Bell, and there is a weird Fark "username" that is swirling around in there......

"One guy wanted to give me $125 for it," Brooke said.

Should've taken it.

Or the operator was farking around while tending the machine. I bet he made a few for himself but lost this one.

2006-04-08 03:12:57 AM
I seriously doubt this is a mint error, and it wasn't created on a railroad track. This sounds more like something a metallurgist hippie geek created in his mom's basement just to fark with people.

Should've taken the $125.

I'd hit it.

Where's your god now fnorgby?!

2006-04-08 03:50:29 AM
The redundancy in this article bothered me.

"It's the size of a penny, a little larger than a dime"

If you don't know the size of a penny....you're not gonna know how big a dime is...so why say both?

2006-04-08 03:54:31 AM
i remember plating pennies with nickel for a lab experiment once, used a battery and some liquid electrolyte or something.

i ended up winning ashtrays and stuff at the dime toss booth at our local carnival with them.

Dear Idiot: YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN IT!

Cast my vote in the "novelty stamping machine incident" column.

There is an old urban legend about somone trying to use a $2 bill at taco bell. In a fark thread a while ago, a guy named fnorgby tried to pass that story off as his own. Presumably, he didn't realize that it was an urban legend. presumably, he had been told the story by someone else, assumed the story was true, and "made it his own" so that he would seem cool.

Here is the urban dictionary entry about it:

2006-04-08 05:32:46 AM
Isn't fnorgby the guy that replaced a broken fuse in his car with a .22 shell?

2006-04-08 05:40:51 AM
Or is he the guy that blew up on the crapper while trying to smoke. (maybe after eating some Taco Bell he tried to buy with the $2 bill.?)

2006-04-08 05:57:19 AM
It may be worth around a grand. Check out the third and fourth links in the center of this page for examples and prices.

/Tacos for everyone.

2006-04-08 06:03:05 AM
Obviously it's a quantum coin. Duh.

\chuckle

2006-04-08 06:06:07 AM
If all he can get for it is $125, then I guess that's what it's worth, eh?

2006-04-08 06:45:32 AM
Sorry, I'm confused. It says it has the markings of a penny, but the markings described sound to me like the markings on a cent.

If it had the markings of a penny, wouldn't it have a portcullis and the queen on it?

2006-04-08 06:54:40 AM
All of my dimes, look like dimes.

2006-04-08 07:08:20 AM
Sounds like someone tossed a dime into the hopper for penny copper-slugs.
