Is anyone else sick of hearing about what the baby boomers want? This generation has never grown up.

I think the Fusion and Five Hundred are sharp looking cars.

They should make a pickup styled like they were in the '40's and get some of the PT Cruiser market.

Hey, assshat submitter, I ride the roads way more than the average farker and I can assure you most of the people clogging the left lane going slow are women, roughly ages between 30 and 40, with cell phones; probably close to 90 percent. They are also mostly of a certain race, but I'll leave that for the next guy. I virtually never see a boomer in the left lane.

GM did this... they called it the SSR. Unfortunately they made it as an expensive collectible, which made it less useful as a pickup since nobody wanted to get it dirty.

(And in all likelihood, not particularly useful against an insurgency.)

90% of american car companies are producing the ugliest, least imaginative and most uninspiring cars they've ever built, and that is what's wrong with cars today.

30's 40's 50's and even 60's cars all were radically different from one another in form and function. Now? Feh, boring-ass cars that look like every othe boring-ass car on the road, not to mention the loss of cool paint jobs! Ye Gods, where have the paint options gone?!? When is the last time GM or Ford took a chance with a two-tone paint job? It would seem there's about 8 colors offered between the two companies, tops.

This isn't just nostalgia, not one of the big three has made a memorable run of cars since the oil crisis.

K Cars, the GM clones (pick your platform), or maybe the Ford Tempos. There wasn't much to evolve from. Take the Chevy Celebrity, which became the Lumina, then the Monte Carlo. None of the various models were exciting or well designed, unlike the evolution of the 3 series BMWs or the VW Golfs.

zymurgist I actually think the SSR would have sold well if it were not priced the same as a corvette.

dbaggins People in the 50's were hot rodding 30's cars, and people in the 70's were hot rodding 50's cars. The problem is that the collectable cars are now so in demand that the price to buy one and fix it up is more than you could buy the new version for. I think that is why the Mustang is selling so well.

dbaggins: were people in the 50's looking for cars that reminded them of the 30's ?

It makes a lot of sense, at least to me. When you're a highly impressionable kid, you see the nice, expensive cars of your era. You can't afford them as a young adult, but by the time you've got the extra income to blow on a fancy car, ~20 years have passed from your childhood. But now, the car of your dreams is only available as a used beater, with none of the trimmings of a modern car. Not so appealing anymore, and you're more likely to settle for something modern but utilitarian and practical, unless something comes along that tickles your fancy in just the right way. It's genius marketing really.

I just can't see myself buying an American car again, at least not for awhile. I had a BMW X3 and now have an Audi S4, both vastly superior (in my opinion) in ride quality and driving enjoyment to anything American. If my fortunes improve I think an RS4 or S8 might be in my future, if my fortunes go in the crapper I think I'll buy a Japanese econo-box.

that is what I drive, a corolla, it was pretty cheap and it gets good milage and I haqnt needed to get anything repaired except new brake pads and tires since I have owned it(5 years).

2006-04-07 04:42:57 PM
When Automakers in Detroit had the grand scheme that cars should only last 2-5 years before they break down for major repairs and their cars started losing half their value just by driving them off the lot, people started looking at imports that heald their value and were cheaper to keep on the road.

Some American built cars are nice looking except the PT loser. but who can afford their marketing scheme

mark_bert & cot I am really not a GM fan at all, but I actually like the new concept Camero. I could not figure out at first what I really liked about it, but after studying it for awhile I think I like it because it is a modern version of a classic, not a direct rip off. Of the Mustang, Challenger, Camero however I would still take the Shelby Mustang first. The Camero concept is the first GM car other than the Solstic that I have liked at all.

discount sushiathe god-awful designs of the 80s aside, it also became next to impossible for an American automaker to make any coin off of cars over the past 25 years, which is why they had to focus on trucks. The profit margin just isn't good enough on cars when you're saddled with the health care costs of a company like Ford or General Motors. If GM had the health care structure of a Toyota or a Honda (they'd kill for it) it would be thoroughly in the black.

Admittedly most of the designs have been uninspired, but does a Camry or Corolla get your heart racing either? No, because they're not supposed to. They sell like crack anyways, because people assume the quality control and long-term reliability beats the hell out of the Americans. In general, they don't anymore, but the public perception remains.

I can't wait for big rims, skinny tires to go out of style. It f**ks up traffic in the city because they have so little clearance they have to slow WAY down for every little bump so they don't bottom out. These jerks slow things down more than the SUVs that take up 1.5 lanes

All BOLD aside, the numbers are there- particularly for Toyota. They hold their value better and run longer.

Yeah, the Mustangs were done by people who cared, much like the Corvette. They weren't controlled by the management people brought in from Proctor & Gamble and Coke (gotta love that brand stategy they all embraced), or the beancounters.

\sadly I did love the fastback GTs from the late 80s

They sell like that because they don't drop in value by 50% as soon as you drive off the lot

I agree. Who would buy an SSR when they could get a base Corvette for the same price with about 100 more horsepower?

Then again, I have a friend who bought a Plymouth Prowler. Neat looking car, turns a lot of heads when you cruise around in it, but not a lot of power for the price and he paid $5000 over sticker for it.
