Hi all
I'd like to join a football fantasy league, but no one I know is interested, so naturally I am posting this.
I played in espn and nfl fanatsy league last year but it is not much fun, and none of the other players did much anyway.
So who wants to play with me?

So, are we getting a RAW thread tonight?

That ESPN college football awards show was a disgrace. I know LSU and Alabama are two great teams, but they do not have every single one of the best players in the country.

Kinda funny listening to the entire HHGreg sales staff cry out "Ohhh!!!!" when Walton sunk that 3 against UK. Not something you normally hear while shopping for TVs..."Ohhhh!!!" face, anyone?

Alice, I will post here. I am slightly drunk and more than slightly upset at Cornell beating Michigan.

My ranking of cheering for sports:

1. Dartmouth (undergrad)
2. Michigan (grad)
3. Other Ivies except Cornell
4. New England and/or ECACHL schools.
5. Any school I have a particular reason to cheer for in that game, but am not really a fan of in general.
6. EVERYONE ELSE
7. Schools that don't have sports teams
8. High schools
9. Cornell

So... ideas on how to keep the Penn State fiasco from derailing every CFB discussion thread this year? Will try to respond a few times a day over next week.

  2012-08-27 05:48:20 PM
The only thing I can think of short of deleting comments would be to Weeners in the thread asking to refrain from discussing it then give warnings throughout the thread indicating abuses will result in temporary bannination.

Another thing I thought of is having a Penn State thread start a little earlier than the CFB discussion thread. That way most of the related comments would go there.

  2012-08-27 06:25:45 PM
That's roughly what I was thinking. I think CFB fans are getting tired of the same old jokes, so maybe an upfront statement saying the discussion threads are being watched-- and insistently threadjacking to the PSU thing won't be tolerated. Really it would be best if it evolved to a topic that is frowned upon by the discussion thread community as a whole, with a minimum of intrusion by those fun-killing, fascist mods. Cause you know once they get overly involved-- the deluge of taco, corndog, and pony pics.

Maybe you could do the modi thread trick where the warning post is always the last post in the thread so it's visible whenever someone is typing.

Be proactive- throw a Penn State thread on Main half an hour before the CFB discussion thread goes green on Sports. Mainpage threads attract more trolls anyway, give them a throwaway place to do their thing.

And, while there needs to be an anti-troll stance, it needs to be moderate. The "Smells like children" image macro still slays me, and this is Fark- there are going to be inappropriate jokes made. The first time Penn State wins a game, it's going to be a bit of a free-for-all, and God forbid they come from behind to do it.

The jokes are going to get old eventually. Learn from the Ha! Ha! Guy- give people a place to go nuts, instead of trying to excessively hammer the commenters, and things will calm down quickly. It's like I tell my son when his little brother's annoying him- don't make it a game. Don't make a huge issue out of Penn State comments, and they won't be fun, and people will stop. Make it a big issue, and you'll see a whole lot of "I am Spartacus"-type comments.

I like this idea best. That way, if the CFB thread starts to get jacked, we can always link to the Penn State thread and direct them over there. I seem to recall doing that for people who wanted to talk fantasy football in the Sunday NFL threads.

Yes, please. I totally care about your lineup. It's probably the best that's ever been lined up.

Well I haven't drafted yet so we can discuss my plans for the draft or, if you want, previous years' teams and results.

I think most alums have just gotten in the habit of avoiding CFB threads around the Internet in general (/r/cfb on reddit, oddly enough, seems to be one of the few places that has managed to balance ribbing with being outright hateful, in that the fans of the sport are free to bury the comments of the people who think they're being clever when they're not). I expect the first week you'll see a huge influx of the comments, but when they see how few bites there are in the circlejerk, it'll be drowned out with actual football talk and will stop being a problem as the season goes on.

/as for me, see you all in a season or five

  2012-08-28 05:03:48 PM
So you all would prefer no direct modmin participation in the discussion threads. Although my initial feeling was to sticky a concise, but light-in-tone comment from Moderator at the top of the first couple weeks' threads, I'm reconsidering now. Maybe a week 1 PSU thread running parallel(greened say 30min before) would detour the trolliest comments. Plus, like Di said-- y'all could police your own and refer them to the PSU flamestravaganza threads. I'm sorta hoping they beat Ohio week 1 and get the win out of the way.

Squee!

Kayso in my league I have with real-life meat-world friends, my team is the Killer Bunnies. Monty Python shout-out, totally:

RB: Arian Foster (keeper), Trent Richardson, Felix Jones, Michael Bush, Jahvid Best
WR: Wes Welker, Eric Decker, Lance Moore, Nate Washington
TE: Witten (of course), and... Allen from Indianapolis. Don't remember his first name. :-/
K: Janikowski
DEF: SF

In my Fark Sports Jinxes, the Unicorns drafted:

QB: Romo (of course), emo-Cutler
RB: Felix Jones, Darren Sproles, Cedric Benson (hook 'em), Legarrette Blount, Piere Thomas
WR: Demaryuis Thomas, Victor Cruz (ick, but I had to), Greg Little, & for possible sleeper "who?" goodness.... Dwayne Harris
TE: Witten, Greg Olsen
K: Gostkowski (must keep with the skis)
DEF: Packers

Let Moderator make a comment if things get really out of hand, I'd say, but I personally wouldn't start out that way.

Forbidden fruit is sweet. Don't give the idiots any incentive. The cure for trolls is boredom.
