Schick allegedly refused to turn over his documents. "He started yelling, 'What are you going to do?'

"Papers please?"
"No!"
"Alright, buddy, you're coming with us!"

This farking stinks.

*HOWEVER*

If the man was still stopped at the greenlight, he should have been told to pull over to make his calls. Common sense - for both sides - should have kicked in somewhere.

Maybe he was just asking for directions to the kosher farmers market?

Foolish cops. Don't they know Jews don't break the law, even when they do?

I learned a very important lesson a long time ago: always cooperate with police. Always, even if they are in the wrong.

Mr. Clarence Butterworth: Foolish cops. Don't they know Jews don't break the law, even when they do?

Well, we are part of a vast media, governmental, and military conspiracy reaching to the highest levels. What, you think I'm going to jail already?

Should an "elderly and hearing-impaired man" be talking on a cell phone while driving his car in the city? We dont have laws against that yet?

Moral of the story: When the police ask you to do something, don't be an asshat about it.

And people who riot make themselves look like fark-sticks. Especially over dumb shiat like this...

They probably would have only asked him to pull over if it weren't for NY's laws against using a cell phone while driving.

I probably shouldn't find the thought of a mob of Hasidim rioting as humorous as I do, but the mental image just strikes me as very funny. Guess the police were lucky there weren't any Ninjews in the mob. :P

tommyl66: We dont have laws against that yet?

It is against the law for anyone to talk on their cell phone while driving anywhere in the (not-so) great state of NY.

Complete over-reaction by the public if you ask me. Old man shouldn't be driving while on the phone. Worse, he definitely shouldn't think he's above the law. And one of the worst things you can do is to attack a police officer. Obviously some morans WANT to get shot.

But protesters didn't heed the warnings and ran through the streets, some yelling, "Nazi Germany!" at the officers.

I'm sure the NYC cops were herding the Jews into concentration camps. (sigh)

As rumors spread through the crowd that Schick had been beaten, tensions escalated and hundreds of people in traditional black garb poured onto 16th Ave. from 46th to 50th Sts. They set fire to old magazines, fruit boxes and other trash up and down the avenue.

Yeah! Set fire to magazines and fruit boxes! That'll show the cops who's in charge! (sigh)

If you have mercy without strenght, you turn to hedonism and moral relativism

If you have strenght without mercy, you turn to cruelty and immorality

It's important to be a good balance

I was more curious as to why the copasaurs are busting 75 year old guys in Brooklyn instead of any the morons in manhattan. Every other driver is talking on a cell phone.

Tatsuma: Frankly, if I witnessed police brutality, or some elderly person I knew was treated in such a way, I'd be tempted to torch a police car or two myself

Let's see...

Cops said Schick - whose family founded the neighborhood institution Schick's Bakery - became belligerent and refused to hand over his license and registration, leading officers to arrest and handcuff him.

Then...

"They literally manhandled him. They picked him up and threw him in the van," said Sariel Widawsky, co-owner of Schick's. "It was a very forceful arrest for a person who is 75 years old. It was totally uncalled for."

And...

After the uniformed cops were called off the robbery, they returned to the intersection and confronted Schick, who was still stopped in the street despite the light having turned green.

Schick allegedly refused to turn over his documents. "He started yelling, 'What are you going to do?' " the police source said. Witness Haskel Rosenfeld, 29, said he didn't see any mishandling of Schick.

The question will be, given that he was resistant and uncooperative, did he struggle? And, if so, did the police use reasonable force to restrain him, or not?

The problem with this story, of course, is that the community seems more concerned about reacting violently to the insult that one of theirs was arrested than talking about whether he broke the law or not, and if there was any racist selective enforcement at play.

A matter for public debate, and even a legal enquiry? Yes. But cause for assaulting the police, rioting, and Godwining up the streets? Hardly. They were asshats.

no, the problem with this story is:

did they use excessive force on an elderly man?

I won't tolerate jack booted thugs to taser some 8 year old girl, and I won't tolerate them to use excessive force on a non-threatening 70 year old man either, jewish or not

Actually, what would happen if there was a war with them and the Amish? Could they tell each other apart? Don't they wear similiar outfits? That's what always confused me about civil wars in places like Yugo and Africa. How the hell do you tell the Serbs and Croats apart? They freaking look the same. Or the Hootoos from the Tootoos, they freaking look the same. Who is the damn enemy? Do you just kill everyone?

Do any of the major news websites have this story yet? I can find nothing after an unreasonably lazy search.

2006-04-05 09:28:54 AM
Evidently the old guy could hear well enough to talk on a cell phone in traffic.

But pointing that out would take away a good reason for a riot.

We're not a religion of peace at all, we're a religion of Love

Dammit, I always confuse those two. I'd love to get a peice, though.

On a more serious note, this is a bit whacky, isn't it? Hasidim rioting? I know those guys can be a bit off-center, but lighting shiat on fire in the streets isn't very Jewish, is it?

2006-04-05 09:29:08 AM
Does this riot occur if the man pulled over isn't a Hassid?

2006-04-05 09:29:15 AM
"I started running, too. I was almost knocked over," said Esther Kroynik, 20, who had to scale a waist-high fence to avoid the mobs.

How the hell do you "scale" a waist-high fence?

Sidebar:

Channel 1 (local NYC station...not the high school news show) took just 46 seconds to bring up the holocaust during their reporting of this story this morning...WTF does that have to do with this?
