Why would someone employ minimum wage workers when they can get the same amount of work done for less?

Keep his golf course fresh?

How? By making the bodies into compost?

DRTFA

Don't plan to.

Just pay 'em and make 'em pay insanely stupid taxes like the rest of us.

Quit being hypocrites: The U.S. economy depends upon below-minimum-wage illegal immigrant labour. Visit any plantation farm at harvest time if you doubt this.

If you don't like undocumented illegal immigration, start calling them 'guest workers', let them cross the border in registered transportion and treat them like human beings.

zn0k: if a man that wealthy thinks that we need 'em around for any reason, then maybe we should listen.

Ugh, I kind of metaphysically threw up in my mouth when I read that. Being rich doesn't make you evil, but it most CERTAINLY does not entitle you to a special opinion.

Starting with getting our own off of their sorry asses by cutting off welfare to able-bodied unemployed Americans would be a far better option. MAKE them work and the illegals won't have as much reason to come here if there are far fewer jobs waiting for them.

2006-04-03 03:40:36 PM
I love the argument that Americans won't do the jobs that they do. I don't know about the rest of you, but I worked some pretty crappy jobs before I got some college education under my belt. And it's not like every American is college-educated.

They're hired because business don't want to pony up to meet the minimum wage requirement. So other possible solutions include: A) Repealing minimum wage laws and letting the market dictate the value of a job or B)actually come up with some real punishments for these dickwads who are adding to the problem by hiring illegals just to save a buck.

Somehow, Bloomberg's comments strike me as cluelessness on the scale of "let them eat cake."

2006-04-03 03:41:08 PM
It's time to accept that this is our own damn fault for holding employers to such unrealistic labor standards. Honestly, we need to get rid of the New Deal. It wasn't effective in its own time, and it's sure as hell not effective now.

2006-04-03 03:41:11 PM
Meh. Legalize the ones here, then seal up the border. But make sure the border is a diode so that Americans can escape if the country ever goes to crap.

The only way this guy wins is because of his money, he always creates rules for other people (e.g. no smoking rule in public places) yet doesn't enforce it for himself (e.g. after smoking ban was in place, he had a party for his friends who mostly lit up inside a hotel meeting room, cops were there and didn't hand out a single ticket to any of bloomy's rich friends).

Cdn_Nrrd, maybe you'd like for millions of illegals to move in next to you and start breaking the back of some Canadian industries. Sure, we depend on them for SOME things, but mostly it's stuff that our lazy people won't (NOT can't) do.

2006-04-03 03:43:18 PM
This is not asinine in the least and Mr. Bloomberg makes an excellent point: They're already here. Looking for ways to expel illegal immigrants would be a difficult, overly expensive and ulitimately useless exercise.

Yes - it's second only to "try to twist factual issues into emotional ones by blurring the issues - like confusing 'illegal' immigration with 'immigration'."

Questions:

1. Who's maintaining the golf courses (and washing the dishes, making the beds, cleaning the toilets, etc.) in Hawaii? They don't have many illegals.

2. If we're supposed to need illegals here because they do work American's won't, why are we educating them and their children and talking about giving them legal residency status? Won't they be harder to exploit if we allow them a path out of serfdom?

Farkistani: //anti-ILLEGAL-immigrant

That's all semantics and context. Who's to say your punk-ass is legal? A goverment that came over and planted a flag on someone else's land.

More to the point... these people are here to work. They're not here to collect welfare. They tend to stay crime-free, because if they are arrested, they get deported. Also, I heard this morning that illegal immigrants who use fake SSN's to work, pay $7,000,000,000 into social security. And they never get to collect. Get over yourself, if they're taking your jobs, then you're shooting pretty low. You have a far superior education, use it.

Cdn_Nrrd: If you don't like undocumented illegal immigration, start calling them 'guest workers', let them cross the border in registered transportion and treat them like human beings.

Even the most pro-immigration people should support something like this. Even if we change the system to allow as many people in legally as are currently getting in illegally, there's no reason it shouldn't be a controlled process. Not only does a porous border make us less safe as a country, but why reward those willing to break the law while other immigrants are waiting in line for the legal process? You're selectively admitting criminals. It just doesn't make any sense.

"Nobody wants to deport them, in the end, because people need them to take these jobs and do the things that nobody else is doing at the slave-labor rate we prefer to pay," Bloomberg said.

There, fixed it for him.

Oh for crying out loud. It was just an example. Not an anguished cry of "But who will attend to my greens!?"

Despite how you feel about the immigration issue, he was simply citing and example of crappy work that no one will do except immigrants who will do it and do it inexpensively.

I don't even care for Bloomberg. But this kneejerk overreaction/boycott/riot/protest stuff over farking minutiae has got to end. It helps no one and accomplishes nothing.

He's right. The menial, minimum wage jobs that no other documented citizens would take, or last more than a week at need to be filled by someone. Another way to solve this problem is to RAISE the minumum wage so that real Americans can actually pay their bills and live comfortable from even the least desired jobs.

However, should he be referring to "under the table"and below minimum wage paying jobs at this golf course, it is the country club that is at fault and should be prosecuted for... well, lots of things.

Bottom line is the US can't compete with China and India's near slave labor wages, so Illigal immigrants are hired under the table to help plug the holes in our sinking economy.

The problem is, they're doing it illegally, & at below minimum wage.

The Senators who voted for the watered-down bill want expanded immigration, legal or otherwise, for the very same reason that they are against abortion: it ensures a steady supply of dirt cheap labor.

Maybe because it isn't really in the interest of the country, or for the non-rich?

Krugman says it best, reprinted here. To sum up:

- Illegals, even those paying taxes, cost the locality more in services than they return back in taxes. In other words, this is a form of corporate welfare - shadow subsidized labor.

- Illegals are bad for democracy. Krugman brings up the example of Dubai, where a huge chunk of the population are disenfranchised "guest workers". You know those problems in France over Muslims? That's what "guest worker" programs get you.

- Illegals contribute to lower wages for many citizens.

- Illegals hardly increase the prosperity of most of the rich.

Lastly, the discussion of "immigration reform" is racist. Let's call it what it is: preferential treatment for folks form the south of the border. Can folks from other part of the world come here the same way? No. It should be called the Poor Mexican Exploitation Act.

It is nothing more than ushering in millions into indentured servitude. I am ashamed of fellow liberals for getting behind any of this.

And if anyone says it: yes, I come from immigrants, too. Immigrants that didn't get welfare, had their names forcibly changed, learned English on their own, came here legally, and most of all, paid their fair share of taxes.

Talk to me when any party is looking to actually continue this proud tradition.

//Why don't we do something to make life better in Mexico? Oh yeah, we tried that with NAFTA. Oops.

If you're going to get upset about how poorly we pay them, maybe you ought to be upset with how little we pay people in the far east to do a lot of our manufacturing. Fact is, our lifestyle is highly dependent on the availability of cheap labor. The only difference is that the Mexicans do jobs that you actually have to enter the US to do, like picking produce and gardening.

I'm quite sure that if it were cost effective to send our lawns to china to be mowed, it would be happening and the Mexican border would be a lot harder to cross.

Loogel's Roadmap to better border policy:

* Increase legal immigration and screen for felons, by a larger percentage to relieve illegal immigration pressure.
* Provide amnesty for Illegal's already here.
* Enforce large fines on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
* Tighten border security using a fence, more border patrols or another method.

How does that make one virtuous? In a same sense that a cripple is virtuous because he struggles with everyday life?

I hate to say it, but the president has pleasently surprised me twice in the last few weeks: first raising the mileage standards on SUVs and now this "guest worker" program, which I think is a great idea. Whether or not it leads to citizenship is almos irrelevant--they will pay taxes, send their kids to school--it's semantics.

If we treated them like human beings we would have to pay them minimum wage. If we had to pay them minimum wage we would not have use for them as we could fill those positions with our own societal rejects. If you want to be treated like a human being imigrate legally.
