Green???? Holy mother of god....

2006-03-30 12:42:47 PM
so much for the mere 10-ton Mother Of All Bombs

2006-03-30 12:44:21 PM
Cool...if you have Google Earth, you can look just north east of Las Vegas and see the test range...Pretty spiffy...

2006-03-30 12:45:13 PM
hey...that picture that goes along with the story is a little misleading...I couldn't figure out what kind of rocket they were going to put 700 tons of explosives on....so is this a simulation of a tactical nuke or what?

2006-03-30 12:45:35 PM
700 tons? Damn!

In other news, my penetrator is already fully developed.

2006-03-30 12:46:03 PM
I had a feeling that the guys behind this project were compensating for something but this proves it, ""We have several very large penetrators we're developing," he told defense reporters."

2006-03-30 12:47:12 PM
Ahem, Iran.

Terrific headline submitter. Bravo.

Marmilman: Terrific headline submitter. Bravo.

Yeah, holy shiat, a bomb that's explosive!? Who woulda thunk?

Divine Strake? Did they mean "strike" or are they using the nautical term?

Does anyone else think that any sort of "divine" bombing (near Las Vegas) is creepy in a The Stand kind of way?

Seriously, who names this stuff? Pat Robertson?

Isn't "strake" is Texan for "strike" =P

CHRISTIAN BOMBING TECHNIQUE REVEALED!

2006-03-30 01:04:45 PM
you can keep that extra "is" from that last one for free...damn, can't RTFA properly, can't type properly...should have caught the short bus to work today--maybe they could have helped.

strake
n. Nautical

A single continuous line of planking or metal plating extending on a vessel's hull from stem to stern.

700 tons seems a little impractical to deliver. I know they are testing some optimum their theory provides, but it would take a shiatload of African swallows to carry that coconut.

iphtashufitz: A single continuous line of planking or metal plating extending on a vessel's hull from stem to stern.

Not to quibble, but strakes will sometimes not run completely from stem to stern, for instance on a lapstrake boat where the bow is a good bit higher than the transom. Some strakes will then run from the stem to some point not the stern.

"What kind of bomb was it?"

"The exploding kind"

2006-03-30 01:37:57 PM
Actually it is 771 tons. It is 700 tonne or metric tons.

2006-03-30 01:43:18 PM
Dancin_In_Anson: just north east

Erm...sorry...that would be north west...

2006-03-30 01:45:46 PM
Uh. How are they going to "drop" that. Won't it need kind of an uber big parachute? Hmmm. A quick check shows that a C5A Galaxy can carry about 1400 tons...

vernonFL: Ahem, Iran.

Right, cuz the MOAB has been SO effective against the Iraq insurgency?

/whatever
//lucky they haven't made an IUD out of one yet.

Isotope

Thanks for the link. The picture at the bottom was especially interesting - I first read the tag as "Dianetics" and thought converting the enemy to scientology would be even worse than nukes...

that's the funniest type-o I've seen in a long time (you meant IED, right?)

How are they going to "drop" that.
that's what I was wondering at first, too. After reading it a couple more times, I think they're basically packing it in an underground tunnel, then they'll yell "hey bubba, watch this", light the fuse and run away screaming.

Ha. Dianetics...I dunno, they might just jump on our furniture and hand out fliers instead of trying to kill us. =P

2006-03-30 01:55:17 PM
They need to advertise first that there is a water station there in the desert.

Maybe it will have wheels.

700 tonnes,
771 tons,
1.542M POUNDS of bang?

This'll bust windows how far away?

/ don't be flyin' anywhere NEAR Nevada that day!

2006-03-30 02:24:46 PM
how do you deploy something like that?

2006-03-30 02:28:20 PM
Well, I've got some ideas.

* One of those big black triangles could pick that thing up no problem, duh.

* It is a liquid bomb. First an empty casing is dropped on the target. Then a series of precision raids and special forces operations with 5 gallon containers fill the bomb with the explosive liquid. Then it is set off.

* The bomb has wheels and a V8. It has a very low gear ratio. One of these bombs left for Iran last year and is on it's way.

* Sappers place the bomb under the target as a mine, as in WW I . A tunnel is dug from Iraq into Iran. Then the bomb is packed into the tunnel.

* The bomb is mailed to the target in over 1 million AOL disk packages. They all arrive on the same day.

I like how they made sure to tell the Russians all about it first, and then--oh, yeah, we let Vegas in the loop too.

2006-03-30 02:31:10 PM
DECMATH: Right, cuz the MOAB has been SO effective against the Iraq insurgency?

The MOAB was designed for penetrating/destroying tunnels and was used during the battles in the mountains of Afghanistan. It's not a precision urban weapon.

an IUD

Well, THAT conjure up mental images I could have done without...

2006-03-30 02:46:41 PM
I propose the 700 tonnes applies to the yield not the actual weight of the device. Think fission without all the messy neutrons flying about.

/tin hattedness on
// mercury
///whoa

2006-03-30 02:50:12 PM
Not so much a bomb, as a 'device'.

Too big for use in action, but the results will tell them how far down they can scale it and achieve the desired results.

Of course, if they can't achieve the desired effect with conventional weapons.........

2006-03-30 03:20:02 PM
Useless without video.

...eventually.

2006-03-30 03:30:03 PM
hey wait a sec...I live here in vegas, and the asshat quoted in this story says that they are telling Vegas all about it. BS, this is the first I've heard about it.

2006-03-30 03:44:07 PM
DECMATH: Right, cuz the MOAB has been SO effective against the Iraq insurgency?

This isn't for an insurgency... it's for those 'bunkers' that Iran says are not vulnerable to present weapons. We aim to show them we have a NEW weapon that'll change that viewpoint.

/Israel buys 5 in the near future.

2006-03-30 04:49:03 PM
Not particularly effective against an insurgency.

2006-03-30 05:47:02 PM
Coho: I propose the 700 tonnes applies to the yield not the actual weight of the device.

Exactly. Unless this bomb is actually made of TNT, there's no reason it would have to weigh 700 tonne.

2006-03-30 07:11:13 PM
"We also have -- are you ready for this - a 700-tonne explosively formed charge that we're going to be putting in a tunnel in Nevada"

Sounds like a 700 tonne bomb to me - at least he's certainly happy about it for some reason. Yields (certainly for nukes) are measured in the other type of ton.

Interestingly the largest nuke detonated (Ivan, 58 megatons) weighed 27 metric tons. It was detonated at roughly half strength and vaporised everything in a 25km radius. I <3 nukes.

2006-03-30 07:35:46 PM
There'd better be a damn video of this

That's all I gotta say.

/Submitter wins for the headline btw!
//I love explosions
