Great.

More banner ads. More "click here to win something that you'll have to actually pay for just like anyone else." More pop-ups.

Wonderful.

I've never understood why companies pay so much to advertise on TV. You could pretty much saturate every internet blog for a fraction of the cost. Not to mention anything tech related (*cough* satellite radio *cough*) will be snatched up far more readily by users of the intrawebs.

Easiest way to avoid advertising: Avoid mass media. I recommend hiking and heavy heroin usage.

I will not allow any of these on the sites I run, and I think that any sites that choose to run them should be held as responsible as the company who provides this "service." These people are criminals, period, and for us to allow banner ads promoting their scam on our sites would be simply turning a blind eye to their obvious criminal enterprise while pocketing the silver.

Right, cause merely light heroin users will probably still turn on the tv and get bombarded with advertising.

Banners and pop-ups aren't all that great either for many reputable clients. But don't worry, the advertisers will find you.

Look for more product placements within programming, viral campaigns making the rounds, cinema ads (I hate 'em too) and more and more agressive old-fashioned outdoor and point-of-purchase messaging (think "Blade Runner"). You'll also probably find yourself receiving more and more of your magazines and newspapers in poly-bags full of flyers, post-its, samples and coupons that have been targetted to your individual spending habits (and avoid any anti junk mail bylaws), and you'll keep getting spam that you've unwittingly "opted in" to for special offers and discounts.

Don't blame me. I just work here.

Yeah, because flashing distracting banners and stuff you have to close to read an article are so condusive to shopping.

Gurney, that's exactly what Mr. Hershey did with the first candy bar he produced. There were no advertisements until after his death did someone at Hershey's feel they needed to advertise the best candy bar ever made. Only after his death did someone feel it was necessary to do that, though it couldn't be selling that many more than they already were.

Untrue. Go to a different country and try to pick out laundry detergent.

Do people still watch TV?

Yes, but they skip the commercials with their DVR remote. And they only watch the shows they want to watch -- so no flipping. And they can pause as long as they want to go pee, so commercial breaks are no longer even welcome for physical relief.

For those reasons and others, commercials on TV are becoming obsolete. No point in paying Michael Jordan $10 million to promote Nike if people aren't going to see the spot.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone else have the problem of Filterset.G deleting the user-defined filters each time it updates? I had to disable it because of this. I tend to block any annoying image that I have to see on a regular basis (forum avatars and signatures mainly, and Filterset.G unblocks all of them when it updates.

Clavis: And they can pause as long as they want to go pee, so commercial breaks are no longer even welcome for physical relief.

While that's true in theory, many of the people I know with PVRs (including myself) wait until a commercial break to pause a show. I suspect that those of us who do so are the same people who prefer to read to the end of a chapter in a book before putting it down.

And by the way, if there are any advertisers reading this, any sort of intrusive online ad -- pop-up, pop-under, sliding over the text of a page to obscure it -- makes me less likely to buy your product.

What about word of net advertising?

If [H]ard|ocp says some product rocks, how many will be inclined to buy it?

I've got to hand it to the advertising folks. They have one of the biggest scams ever and yet they never get called on it and there is no end in sight. Props to the fashion industry as well. Nicely done.

Advertising has no impact on me, because I am a maverick individualist. Just like all the rest of you assholes.

I do feel an urge to strangle people who use the sentence "Think [something]". It was tough to avoid prison when my wife worked for O&M.

There are one or two decent television commercials.

My favorite's are for Robin Hood flour here in Canada.

Click here for an example (the download is tiny).

Video opens in a new window & you'll need Quicktime installed to view.

tetzy

I like the other one that ends with the girl saying "..And astronauts." And the one where the boy accuses her of having a boyfriend and then she kicks him in the leg under the table.
