Ha! My Krag is chambered in .30-40. Eat that, you intruder, you.

Actually, I'd probably use my SAR-1. Nothing says lovin' like 30 rounds of 7.62x39.

A 60-year-old Moffat County man was identified Monday as the victim of a home invasion shootout in Craig.

When you get shot breaking into someone's home, and then CONTINUE breaking in only to be shot again, you should not be called a victim.

Get off your high horse. What would be better, a dead kid and homeowner? The guy was armed and breaking into a house that was occupied. Man with gun tries to break into your house, when is it OK to shoot him? Would you rather wait and hope the police will come and save you (they won't, they're cowards, they'll just surround the place and wait for the big guns to show up)?

How typical for someone lustful for death. Salvation cannot come from man alone - even one with a firearm.

LocalCynic: Ah, another member of the culture of death. Firearm worshippers like yourself need to stop kneeling to your golden calves. When the time of judgement comes, you'll find yourselves in the hellish fire for your attempts to place the second amendment above the first commandment.

If that's the worst thing I will go to hell for, I'll be suprised.

FYI- all guns involved are hunting weapons, pure and simple. None if the guns is targeted by any gun control legislation, and considering where this occured are very likely normally used for hunting.

No, but a few more years together as a family surely can.

That ought to pay off big when some nut kicks in your door to rob you.

Where do you people live that you're so paranoid? I'm not being mean or judgemental. I just feel bad for you, because I think it would awful to be so afraid of your neighborhood that you think someone would come in your home and kill you. And I know that, theoretically, it CAN happen anywhere, and inevitably it does, but unless you live in the ghetto, you probably have a better chance of getting hit by a bus than killed in a home invasion.

We can be glad that the actual victims in this case (the homeowner and his son) were not harmed. With the limited information from the article, I think the homeowner acted properly. So that makes me feel a little better about the situation.

Then again, mature human beings generally don't get a raging hardon and rejoice when other humans die. So I see your point.

if your going to use a shotgun make sure you use a slug.

I have an M1 Guarand for my home defense system. It's a 30-06 and it was used to kill many nazis at one point in time.

The "ping" at the end of the clip lets you know when the intruder is toast.

keylock71: When the wife and I moved into our house, I went shopping around for a gun for home defense purposes (not a bad area, but I always told myself I'd get a gun once I owned a house). Everyone I talked to who knew about firearms and home defense recommended I get a shotgun (we have no kids).

Fortunately, I haven't had to put this recommendation to the test, but I'm pretty sure I made the right choice...

Better yet, I always recommend to friends that they purchase a pump-action shotgun for home protection. If you grab it and cycle it, just about any intruder will haul ass out of your house if he hears that sound.

I_Hate_Iowa: What's a .410 shotgun? I'm only familiar with 12-gauge, 20-gauge, etc.

A .410 is pretty tiny. Not that big at all. Loaded with birdshot or something small, it wouldn't do much damage.

Especially if he was shooting through a door.

A 30-06 would do some huge damage. Think AK-47.

Does depend on where you live. Also - criminals are portable. That being said I hope to never experience this sort of drama, or have anyone I know go through it.

Oddly enough, One of the best lessons on home defense comes from an interview with a Gun shop owner in Michael Moore's 1989 film "Roger and Me"

"We usually tell them that probably their best protection for home... is the short-barreled shotgun.

"Why is that?"

"It's easy to handle... and if you do have to shoot, you're not liable to miss. And when they hear that pump gun... when you rack that, there's no other sound like it. Usually you don't have to fire it. They get moving pretty fast. They'll move away."

"They don't like the sound?"

"They know exactly what you have."

"You don't have to say,
''I have a gun in my hand.''"

"They know it'll really tear them up."

I have a Swiss K31 7.5mm under my bed... I've actually considered that in the unfortunate and unlikely event I'd need to use it in the case someone breaks into my house, I'd have to be careful where I point it so I don't kill someone next door.

safest way to protect your house?

have a good insurance policy.

get a big dog.

security system.

by the time you hear someone breaking into your house, get the shotgun, unlock the ammo, load up the shotgun...you're dead. or the punks have stolen your shottie.

and if you sleep with a loaded shotgun readily available, well, you're just waiting for a home accident, or for someone to steal it and you can be charged with careless storage of a firearm.

have a nice day!

self defense for me is a mac-90 semi-auto with 30 rounds of 7.62 or if they really pissed me off a .375 H&H Magnum. (Moose gun. Or elephant if I were to travel.)

or a russian SKS with a bayonet if necessary

or a .30 carbine pistol.
