I feel compelled to point out that there is absolutely NO causal relationships in this article.

- People who sleep more don't have their lifespans shortened.

- People who sleep less will not become richer or live longer.

But other than that, I actually appreciate someone telling me that I don't have to feel guilty that I'm ruining my body when I normally get 6 hours of sleep a night.

Sleep?

4 hours for a man, 6 for a woman, 8 for a fool.

Studys show that people that have seen cars are more likely to die in cars than those that have never ridden in cars.

2006-03-24 07:33:54 PM
When is this new? I remember research demonstrating a "more sleep = more death" correlation years ago.

Also, as I pointed out in another thread, it is incorrect to say that correlation never equals causation. But in this case, there is probably no causal interpretation.

2006-03-24 07:34:25 PM
Or is it 6, 7, and 8?

In any case, 8 is definitely for a fool.

:P

Sleep is a luxury for those who rarely have to get up.

well, isn't it a common stereotype that old people don't sleep much?

maybe it's been backwards all along; people who don't sleep much grow old.

meh, sleep is overrated. I have the ability to go weeks without it. An unhealthy cocktail of coffee and redbull throughout the day helps. The longest i did was last year just before christmas. 32 days straight. Then out of the farking blue, i collapsed and woke up 4 hours later and carried out with the day.

needless to say, when you randomly collapse, its time for a little sleep.

I am fully convinced that anyone who sleeps, even one time, has a 100% chance of dying.

Billions of milk drinkers have died!

I was going to go into the field of research, but a couple years ago I gave that up. Most research is crap and you can manipulate stats to give you the answers you want anyways. I'd guess about 30% of studies are actually worth anything.

30 times or more a month? Huh?

Know anything about a peer-reviewed process? When I get potential articles to review, if they are crap, it is obvious and they won't get published.

Good science is good science. As long as people aren't making up numbers, which is rare but happens, then you should be able to look at the article and decide for yourself the scientific merit.

Are there ways to make insignificant stats look better? Sometimes. But usually those methods are obvious to reviewers. You should reconsider the research field because I think you may have some major misconceptions.

Well, technically you went 32 days with very little sleep.

There's a disease called fatal familial insomnia. People gradually lose the ability to sleep entirely, go insane, and die.

The limit is approximately ten to fifteen days without sleep before you die.

So, what you experienced was probably more along the lines of multiple microsleeps of 1-30 seconds each. Because, if you didn't sleep at all, you'd be dead.

Interesting thing about microsleep is, you don't know it happened, usually. There's some great video out there of someone falling asleep on their feet, and claiming very vocally that they never were asleep. Almost like one of those hypnotist videos.

If you're living on 4 to 6 hours of sleep a night you aren't living longer... it only SEEMS longer.

"Know anything about a peer-reviewed process?"

Yes, which in most cases is just smoke and mirrors. For example, countless studies in major journals such as the Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine (both prestigious medical journals) have been demonstrated to have huge flaws in them, large enough they should have not even been published. And in areas of medicine, you don't have time to analyze every journal article that comes out, for they come out daily. The journal itself is supposed to ensure that the study was conducted correctly, which apparently they do a really poor job of.

"You should reconsider the research field because I think you may have some major misconceptions."

I posted the short and sweet version, but I already was in the research field, I just did not pursue it. However, most of my disgust is with medical research. The psychology research I was involved in was more legit, although I saw plenty of bad studies published in that field as well.
