I think if there's one thing I really hate, it's stupid protesters. It's especially the ones around here, the ones who protest poverty by doing jackass things like trashing government offices. Get some farking jobs, you losers.
2002-06-03 08:32:16 AM
Actually guys, you suck at complaining. Go protest a new stadium or something.
2002-06-03 08:46:34 AM
Well, as a Massachusetts resident I have to say... A MILLION DOLLARS FOR A FARKING CAT IN THE HAT MEMORIAL?!?! They're cutting things like education, literacy programs and healthcare yet they earmark a million bucks for a goddamn Dr. Seuss tribute. Unbelievable.
2002-06-03 08:48:17 AM
Far off in a distant land
Were protesters who beat the band
For any pissy little 'plaint.
Think they're picky? No they ain't!

They gabble and they carry signs
They rabble rouse in picket lines
'Cause any protest MUST be just!
They yell until their throats are bust.

This statue's for a racist cause!
The government's got silly laws!
Don't you hate that cell phone tower?
We'll topple it with people power!

If I seem a bit uncouth
It's only cause I tell the truth
These TV airtime protest whores
Need some jobs, ain't that for sure.
2002-06-03 08:54:15 AM
"Why don't you take your protest and shoVE IT UP YOUR ASS!"
2002-06-03 09:01:55 AM
I have to agree with them. It's stupid.

(humor attempt)

Do you do it in a box?
In a box with a fox?

I'm going hoooome.
2002-06-03 09:06:32 AM
The story, shown at first on Fox,
Came in my house from a glowing box.
The people gathered in the square
And chanted slogans in the air.
They did not like the park,
They thought it was a lark.
The called the whole thing pork,
They called the congressman a dork.
I watched the show and then I sighed,
"Some days it's best to play outside".
2002-06-03 09:08:49 AM
Damn, I hate to say it, but I have to admit, $950,000 does seem a bit steep.

2002-06-03 09:09:55 AM
The protesters outside of the Super K I used to go to all the time got paid $8 an hour to sit around drinking beer with a sign taped to their lawnchair. farking assholes. Meanwhile I was making $4.25 at a Long John Silver's, busting my ass for chump change.
2002-06-03 09:11:26 AM
This article is too vague to make an assumption about anything at all.

I'm sure guys like this won't care anyhoo.
[image from too old to be available]
Because they molest old people, if they want to.
2002-06-03 09:13:02 AM
Don't know if this will work, but what the hey.
2002-06-03 09:13:54 AM
Guess it didn't...
2002-06-03 09:14:41 AM
I like Dr. Seuss because he was cool,
but I am an old FARKing April Fool.
2002-06-03 09:15:48 AM
Assuming that what the protesters say is true (which, I admit, is a sizable assumption), think about how many actual human lives could have been saved with that money. Think about how many kids who could have had just that better a shot at life. Think about what Dr. Seuss would have wanted that money to go for, before you mock and belittle those protesters.
2002-06-03 09:16:09 AM
What the hell?!?! Does the statue give free bj's?? I can understand why a group that was formed to biatch about gov waste would think this statue is a big waste of money because it is. If people want a Dr. Seuss memorial statue, they should start a freakin Dr. Seuss memorial statue fund, not want the gov to buy them one.
2002-06-03 09:16:43 AM
I like Dr. Seuss, but I agree that there's NO WAY that a statue to him should take money that was earmarked to help poor people, I don't know the man, but I'd *guess* that any decent human including him would be appalled at the very thought.

The Seuss estate is LOADED. They have more than enough money to pay for the memorial, or donations could have been gathered.
2002-06-03 09:18:09 AM
"It's probably too late to do anything about it now, but the next best thing is to complain about it, which is what we're good at."

Protesting a Dr. Seuss memorial to make yourself feel like you're making a difference in the world? Nice Life. Your parents must be proud.
2002-06-03 09:18:49 AM
and IIRC, the government actually paid something like 6.3 million for the statue. The 950K the protesters are whining about is only one chunk of the money that was taken from other allocations.
2002-06-03 09:28:28 AM
We're not gonna protest!
[image from too old to be available]
2002-06-03 09:29:25 AM
Gutter is a tool!
2002-06-03 09:31:48 AM
I just became familier with the concept of the food Coop. The hippies bring you in, the prices bring you back. And they got all that weird shiat that you always see the people on the food network using.
2002-06-03 09:44:07 AM

You mean knives?

[image from too old to be available]
2002-06-03 10:00:05 AM
They only reported on the protestors POV, but gov't money does seem like a bad idea. Still, there are better things to argue about, like porkbarrel politics. Think how much goes to waste through bribes and campaign donations.
2002-06-03 10:09:54 AM
A MILLION DOLLARS FOR A FARKING CAT IN THE HAT MEMORIAL?!?! They're cutting things like education, literacy programs and healthcare yet they earmark a million bucks for a goddamn Dr. Seuss tribute. Unbelievable.

Refresh my memory...just how over budget is that underground road system in Boston?
2002-06-03 10:17:40 AM
Umm..they aren't protesting the memorial, they are protesting the fact that the local government changed a financial allocation without telling anyone about it. Makes sense to me.
2002-06-03 10:21:52 AM
Yeah, as a Mass resident, I'd rather see that $1 million dollars handed over to the Turnpike Authority so that they'll shut up about their fukking toll increase to cover the fukking Big Dig. Politicians suck.
2002-06-03 10:22:11 AM
Anybody bother to go to the home page of the group protesting? These guys are not hippie-type protestors. Some of their campaigns:

Support the Yucca Mountain Plan.

Make the Tax Cuts Permanent

Constitutional Amendment making it harder to raise taxes

They are more like libertarians.
2002-06-03 10:33:25 AM
They were protesting the thing because it was money previously earmarked to help poor communities.

Now maybe this statue despense food and medical aid, but I think I have to agree with them on this.
2002-06-03 10:52:21 AM
Another reason I moved to New Hamster, umm Hampshire

"Live Free or (else)Die"
2002-06-03 11:21:44 AM
"It's probably too late to do anything about it now, but the next best thing is to complain about it, which is what we're good at."

Sheesh! That's for sure! Don't these do-gooders have anything better to biatch about!? And what's biatchin' about going to accomplish? 'Speciually since they already know it's not gonna do any good....
2002-06-03 11:31:59 AM
Eh, nothing wrong with public protest, Pappa72. And given the fact that it's misappropriated monies, I'd be pretty POed too. "This tax is to pay for education for the community.... OK, now we're going to take this tax surplus (what education?) and pay for the Governor's humidor. Have a nice tax year!"
2002-06-03 11:33:30 AM
Chick3_16 they are complaining about porkbarrel politics. That's what this group does.

Although I think the comment; "It's probably too late to do anything about it now, but the next best thing is to complain about it, which is what we're good at." is more than a little tongue in cheek. I think they want the legislators and representatives spending their money to know that the public is watching. Might be too late fot this project but now the more aware public might be predisposed to look at the allocation of tax funds a little more closely.

Don't get me wrong, I love doctro Suess, but this thing is a sham. And lastly but importantly, not all protesters are hippies. But the headline stinks of Fb- caliber trolling so who cares.
2002-06-03 11:45:32 AM
American Goverment, doing what it has been good at for over 200 years... Wasting The Peoples Money!!
2002-06-03 11:52:25 AM
I am not one to go against props for Mr. Geisel, but seriously, I live a minute and a half away from this statue, and unless I decide to go down to the Quadrangle to check out the musuem and happen to see it then, I have no intention of looking at this. Seems like over the last year, alot of money is being sunk into my city (including the building of a new Basketball hall of Fame right next to the old one) and I can't figure out why.
Six or seven years ago, we were in such a bad shape financially in my particular area that we couldn't afford paper for the schools.
This and a thousand other factors make me think these protesters aren't too far off with their views.
2002-06-03 12:00:48 PM
Guys, don't even bother defending the protesters. There are far too many farkers who see the word "protesters" and will automatically criticize them regardless of the situation.
2002-06-03 12:18:42 PM
I may be joining in a little late but I want to make two points:
A) nothing says that this money was earmarked for schools or anything. All the protesters say is that it was spent behind closed doors--it could have (but didn't) come from their pensions.
B) if you read the comments for the original thread, about the building of the statue, everyone aproved--hell, I bet some of you did. It also came with a "hero" tag, which I felt was appropriate. I also think that this one should get an "assinine" one.
2002-06-03 12:32:33 PM
Stereotypes exist for a reason, HexRei. While it may be better to suspend judgement until you know, I'd assume that a raccoon on the front porch means that your garbage will be pilfered.
2002-06-03 12:37:39 PM

Fark: Protesting protestors since 2000!
2002-06-03 12:42:22 PM
Yes, Stevarooni "Stereotypes exist for a reason..." and the reason is ignorance. And your analogy is a poor one. It is not a sterotype to say a racoons pilfer garbage, neither is it a sterotype to say that cats kill mice or dogs bark. Pilfering garbage is not an unfair and discimintory assumption about racoons, it is simply something they do.
2002-06-03 12:44:07 PM
Unless you have a pet raccoon. PLEASE DONT JUDGE MY PET RACCOON LIKE THAT. He does not eat garbage, he only eats gormet pizza and starbucks frapacino.
2002-06-03 12:44:43 PM
Dr. Seuss has done more for the world then protesters have ever done. The Dr. Seuss bible? Very consinse. "God said "I will send down my Son, I will send him to you, to clear up all this hummpity-bumnity-hullaballo."
2002-06-03 12:49:25 PM
Lol! and sorry Joshewah. Suppose I should have been more specific by referring to wild racoons. I didn't know people kept racoons as pets and in such splendor yet...learn something new everyday :p
2002-06-03 01:48:43 PM

What the hell is a "sterotype"??
2002-06-03 02:08:22 PM
Thanks Jove for pointing out the error of my ways! For a second there a serious, deadly misspelling nearly undermined my argument. Thank the gods for grammar and spelling nazis- what would we do without them?! /sarcasm

Seriously, dickhead, you know what I meant: Stereotype, feel better now?
2002-06-03 02:13:02 PM
rather it be spent there than in some arab country.

Okay, I love Dr. Seuss as much as the next person, but come on people. Did you even read the article? It said that the $950,000 dollars spent on this statue was 'earmarked for poor communities.' The money was supposed to be spent helping the needy, but went to a statue. Frankly, I'm sure Dr. Suess is rolling in his grave right now.
2002-06-03 02:31:33 PM
Uhh... These aren't your normal hippie protestors here. These people actually have a valid reason to be pissed off. It's not as if they're claiming that Dr Seuss was a racist/homophobe/meat eater/capitalist or anything, which is what hippies usually protest over
2002-06-03 02:37:56 PM
Bah. Speak for your own stereotype, Ant. Don't lump all us hippie type people in your little closed minded view.
