They'd better improve their pitching staff before next season.

Dude everyone knows Satan started the catholic church to lead believers astray...

But the real question is when will they make the seven year peace deal with Israel that will signal the begining of the Apocalypse.

Gotta love Chick!

Wait, we talkin' the real Pope and Cardinals or replacements?

Friday's concistory, or elevation ceremony, each new cardinal will take an oath and receive his "biretta," the red hat that symbolizes the dignity of the office as well as his....

Do catholics believe the pope somehow is the agent of god in this world? I really dont know, the mormons believe their leader can actually speak with god. Do catholics believe the pope can speak with god?

Is this how they spend their time? Trading hats? Something tells me news stories about the vatican would be different if these people were actually prefered by god.

I think you may want the joos did it thread.

That's two over, unless the Irish got there first.

There's that joke. A cardinal comes running in with a phone and tells the pope "I've got great news and I've got terrible news! Which do you want first!?" And the pope asks for the great news first. "The Lord is back and he's on the line right now!" "What can possibly be the terrible news?" "He's calling from Salt Lake City!"

Pujols is a man. I still wake up screaming, "Don't pitch to him! Aw, shiat." We got ours until we ran into the buzz saw known as the White Sox.

The pope is am an just like everyone else - he is the leader, not the God. His only 'superpower' is the idea of infallibility, and that doesn't just lie in him. The Pope can speak with infallibility (from the 'seat of Peter') and what he says is true at this point in time. For the rest of time (which is most) what he says isn't doctrine, it doesnt even have to be believed.

They believe that he is the successor of St. Peter, who Jesus entrusted to build his Church. The title Vicar of Jesus Christ does indicate that he is considered God's representative.

To what extent though, can he speak with god? Would a prayer for for physical divine intervention be more likely to be granted by god if the pope prayed for it, as opposed to a regular person? Do messages from god come to him in dreams or by meditation?

Dude, seriously, do you have to go and pick this fight in every thread that mentions Catholicism? You and I have butted heads on this issue at least twice before (reference my old login, MN_Johnnie). Give it up man. You're not going to get any Catholics to change the way they think about things simply because you said they should on some website that no one takes too seriously...just like I'm not going to convince you that Catholics are not idolaters. If you can hold fast in your beliefs, whats to say that others shouldn't just tell you to fark off so they can believe in theirs?

/end rant

2006-03-24 03:27:06 AM
Yup worshiping Mary, and the other saints is a form of idol worship. Because "God" says I am the only one and though shall not worship other shiat heads. However the catholics are farked from the get go because they believe that good deeds will get them into heaven, not belief in jesus christ. Which is soooo wrong. And yes the pope is believed to be gods representative on earth. All of this makes this cookie believe that the roman church was formed by Satan, as a way of misleading the belivers... well maybe its just me and Jack Chick that believe this, but check out this thread and maybe youll think diff...

There is no other mediator with than god than his son Jesus Christ! Even if you prayed every night to all the saints and to Mary, and did a million good deeds, you would NEVER get into heaven. Jesus Christ is the only way! The bible says this and everyone whos a Christian should read it and understand it, or go join some other nutbag religion. Im very sick of christians who have no idea what their religion means.

Mcaffolder, Mcaffolder, Mcaffolder

I was going to not start off this post by saying this, until I vistied the link: you're nuts.

That said, please, please, please do your research on the Catholic Church before you start acting like you know everything. Talk to a preist. Actually go to a Church. Read some doctrine. But Lord Almighty, don't buy everything you see on some random internet cartoon.

You're like everyone else out there who needs this explained to them, so running the broken record risk, I'll explain it again. The saints are not worshipped. The saints are not even prayed to. Mary and the saints are both asked to be intercessors, in the exact same way that I might ask you to pray for me. Period. End of story. The prayers don't go to Mary, they are requests for Mary to pray to God, the one true God, the only God, and the only God that you'll find any Catholic worth his salt worshipping. I am a Catholic, and I'm telling you that this is what we do. How you can't believe me over some crackhead internet site after this is beyond me, but I'm quite sure you'll do it, you won't get the point, and you'll go on bashing Catholicism.

Catholics don't believe that good works will get them into Heaven. (Again, if you'd ever talked to a real Catholic besides believing every thing you've ever read from your circle-jerk Catholic hating sessions, you'd understand this). Catholics instead are very skeptical of those who claim that faith alone can save them. If there is someone who is just waiting for their faith to save them, but isn't doing anything to improve the world around them, isn't their very faith suspect? Rather, Catholics believe that good works are necessary as an expression of the only true faith that leads to Salvation from Jesus. Nobody has ever tried to reduce the ability of Jesus Christ to save whomever He wishes.

Anyways, I hope you understand what I'm saying. But I hope in vain, so it doesn't matter. What a waste of keyboard time.

psst. Jesus is make believe. You can stop arguing now.

hook line and sinker..... trolling is fun.. especially with Chick! :D

but seriously you can do "it" however you want, as long as your a good* person I could really care less. Sorry but I was reading Chick earlier today, and I just couldnt refuse. My bad!

On a main note though I do believe "in my personal opinon" that asking someone to pray for you is a farked way to look at things, because "I" believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven and to ask others for their help is not only selfish, but foolish. The only thing that you should ask God for is the wisdom to know, everything else is in a short term sense selfish, even though it may make you feel better about it.

The whole thing in my opinon about Mary and the saints is this. Theyre not God, dont worship them like him. They may have been great but they were and still are but mere mortals, and when you give praise to them you take it away from God.

/Thanks for participating in this trolling session w/ Chick!
// Thank you god for giving me the wisdom to laugh at myself
/// And thanks god for every day that I get to draw breath!

2006-03-24 04:02:27 AM
Alright, you got me...well played! But I don't really feel insulted by it. Personally, I'm relieved to hear you don't actually believe that crap. However, you're still missing my point...no one who is a true believer in Catholicism worships Mary or the saints. We believe they were good examples to follow and good representatives for living a moral life. And we ask for their prayers in the same vein as we ask for the prayers of other mortals. I don't understand how this can be at all misinterpreted as putting them on the same plane as God. I certainly dont.

2006-03-24 04:18:48 AM
Well I wasnt really trying to insult you, more just make someones eye twitch when they actually read the link. And as far as the Catholics NOT worshiping Mary... I think the pic above speaks a lot.. also all the Latino gangbangers in my area have the huge Mary tattoos across their chest, tell me thats not idol worship in one sense or another.

elchip: This shrine is called the Mary, QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE Catholic Shrine.

And why do you (or catholics) ask for the prayers of other mortals, do you think God is going to get you a new ferrari, build the town church quicker, let you touch little girls, not let your grandma die, allow you to run quicker, raise church money with a bake sale etc etc... if only more people or "other non-specified saints" would pray for you.

Gods going to do what hes going to do regardless of your prayers, so for me the only person that "needs" to pray for me is me and the only person I need to pray to is him. When I do I usually try to thank him for his forgiveness, and ask him for wisdom. I mean Im a sucker I throw in pleas for Grandma, the kids, the dog, bucket of money, new ferrari etc etc.. But, in the end even though it makes me feel better to ask I dont think grandmas kidney stones play an essential role into the big picture of my soul getting saved.

/The more you Hoe!
// Man thursday night is boring, good thing Im going to Hawaii tomm.

Mcaffolder: There is no other mediator with than god than his son Jesus Christ! Even if you prayed every night to all the saints and to Mary, and did a million good deeds, you would NEVER get into heaven.

Let's run through the Hail Mary, the most common and most representative prayer.

Hail Mary, full of grace
It's pretty evident from scripture that she has received God's grace.
The Lord is with you
She's up in Heaven hanging out with her son.
Blessed are you of all women
She was chosen to be mother of Christ, that's pretty blessed
And blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus
Well, it pretty much goes without saying that Jesus is blessed
Holy Mary
Every resident of Heaven is holy
Mother of God
If you accept Jesus is God, this isn't controversial
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death
And that's it, it's just a request that she pray to God for us.

I don't know about you, but Catholics believe in the power of prayer. They even believe that souls in Heaven can pray. This is linked in with the practice of praying for the dead. Like most, if not all denominations, Catholics believe that once you're dead, nothing can be done that can affect whether you go to Heaven or Hell. However, Catholics believe that since no sin can exist in Heaven, the soul must first be purified in Purgatory to ready it for Heaven. They believe that prayer said on a soul's behalf speeds up this process of purification.

As for good works, well surely they would be a natural manifestation of believing in Christ's message. I don't think that simply by accepting Christ as your saviour gives you a blank cheque to be as sinful as you like, secure in the knowledge that you will get into Heaven. I think God expects some sort of effort on your part to live up to what Christ proclaimed in as far as a mortal, imperfect human being can do.

Mcaffolder I'm glad you were only trolling, but if there are any fire and brimstone anti-Catholics reading this thread, I hope my response will give them pause.

I am Catholic and proud of my faith.

I pray for guidance, strength, compassion, and healing. I pray to God, and only God.

I do ask for the help of Saints and The Virgin Mary, but I do not hold them higher than God.

I cannot stand when Catholic are bashed by people who don't even know what a Catholic is. I do pray for you, however.

I do hope the Catholic Church can reach out to the people of Islam and bridge the gap between our cultures.

2006-03-24 06:20:13 AM
The very idea of intercessory prayer in a religion where God is said to be omniscient and benevolent is the height of arrogance and self-centeredness. If God wants to do it (assuming this is the nature of God), it must be the highest good possible. If you're asking him to do something other than what he's already decided to do, you're asking him to benefit you at the cost of the highest good.

2006-03-24 06:29:43 AM
Teutonic_Knight: I cannot stand when Catholic are bashed by people who don't even know what a Catholic is. I do pray for you, however.

Sooo whats a catholic again? Pedophile, hatemonger, warmonger, hypocritical, arrogant, pricks? All of these can describe the roman catholic church or at least a large number of the people in charge of it. Dont tout your shiat like its roses, when its attracting flies.

2006-03-24 07:45:51 AM
I was baptised a Catholic, and had no knowledge of it at the time, but I'm hoping that the Pope's first meeting with the Cardinals, is to tell them, "Shucks, fella's, we just plain made the whole thing up. You'se can all just go out and get real jobs now."

Bah, another religious thread.

Next thing I know someone will tell me that the Catholic Church is in dire need of my financial support, right after they build some monstrous, overbearing church in the middle of a upper-class development so that the neighborhood can have something else to brag about besides their shiny new Prada bags. Anyone wishing to see proof of this is welcome to visit Church on the Rise in Westlake, Ohio.

Please. Catholicism jumped the shark CENTURIES ago, it's just gotten worse and worse over the last few decades. With all the cover-ups, closed-door settlements, evangelical asshats, it just makes me even more disillusioned.

After 4 years of Catholic school, I believe pretty firmly that I am an agnostic with a Catholic slant. I believe that there is a God, and that incidentally all the other religions are worshipping that same entity, just with different names. I don't pray to it when I need something, I don't pray to it when begging for some triviality, because in my mind expending that much energy to pray for that object takes away from the energy it would take to actually get it in real life. I just talk, and it helps me get my head on straight and approach things rationally. No money, no donations, no "buy my useless shiat and get salvation", no "show up to this building at 9AM every Sunday or you are less of a Christian", no listening to some 60 year old guy with a 40 year pent-up sex drive talking about some useless drivel that only he and about 5 other people understand, no "youg adult" groups that try to repackage all of the above trite into something "hip" that I can associate with and subsequently consume like it was a Mcdonalds farking cheeseburger.

And no, I'm not trolling. Mcaffolder did a hell of a job with his, and I don't think I can top it.

2006-03-24 10:22:21 AM
For anyone who wonders why there is such a devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe amongst the Hispanic communities, look no further than the fact that after she appeared the whole area quickly converted to Catholicism. In other words, she brought them to Christ, similar to how a Protestant would bring someone else to Christ by sharing with others. While she has not herself provided salvation, she has brought people to her son and they are thankful for it. Imagine if you had a life-threatening illness and someone you didn't even know pointed you to a doctor who had the only known cure. You'd probably be pretty thankful for that guy you didn't know.

They sold out the entire season the first weekend tickets were on sale. I managed to get lucky and I'm seeing them play the Mets in May, plus I'm going to a few out-of-town games.
