Anybody know whether or not that site supports PayPal? I'll order a print of that but only with PayPal, and it's not really worth signing up only to find out they don't.

Without setting up an account to find out for sure, I'd say there's a good chance. From browsing around, I see one of their seller FAQs is on how to get paid, and PayPal is mentioned there.

(they also have a contact page)

Yep. I'd pay money for that.

It's ok, but it doesn't beat my picture of Loch Ness mudwrestling Bigfoot near Noah's Ark.

Then let's see one of the coolest of your lifetime.

Not a gallery, just one.

2006-03-22 02:25:15 AM
I think it's a great shot, but not one of the coolest I'll see in my lifetime. It's pretty and the person who took it captured a very interesting moment but I'm not completely overwhelmed.Does anyone else get the feeling that the horizon should have been tilted just slightly to the right?

It also seems from reading the description that there was quite a bit of post-processing needed as well.

/you know, sharp knees and such

Submitter has obviously never seen this picture.

That one changed my life.

One of the coolest pics you won't see today because it is farked!

2006-03-22 02:30:04 AM
That's a bizarre place to go ballooning. Most people that I know that balloon want few tall trees in the way, to avoid catching on them when accending and decending. I'd actually guess that the pic is a photoshop.

Is it just me or does that picture remind others of those cheesy motivational office posters? It's just begging to be adorned with some kind of awful inspirational quote.

I live in Albuquerque. I see this every October. If anyone comes down to Albuquerque during October, you'll see the same thing.

2006-03-22 02:38:47 AM
uh...or...not.

On a related note, I've got access to cheap printing at huge sizes (up to 30 inches by 50) at school. Any good links to royalty-free high-res images like that or geeky stuff like high-speed macro photography would be appreciated.

"It was only after quite a bit of effort that the underlying beauty of the image appeared." - (followed by a list of Photoshop tweaks, like using the clone tool to erase "distractions")

Interesting. Does he mean that all of the Photoshopping was used to turn it into something beautiful? Or does it mean rather that this what he saw when he took the photo, and all of the Photoshopping is an effort to get rid of the limitations of the camera and make the photo match the beauty he originally saw?

Location: Rio Rancho, NM

Oh. Okay, then. Must be the latter.

/lived in New Mexico for seven years
//it really is quite beautiful

I also live in Albuquerque. And to answer that question earlier, they are not emerging from a forest, but actually what we call the bosque, which is basically the trees and other wildlife surrouding a river. They are dipping into a river, hot air balloning's form of stunt flying.

2006-03-22 03:04:33 AM
nice shot, but i gotta wonder how much of it's feel comes from PS and not the camera. dude-man says it himself- "It was only after quite a bit of effort that the underlying beauty of the image appeared"

SphericalTime, I concur.

Methinks there is a bit more than a bit of processing going on to produce that image. Hot air balloons going up in a forest? Not bloody likely. And the varying depths of light in the foreground layers...does each stand of trees have its own special light source? Don't even get me started on the pterodactyl...

In response to a few people's questions - yes, the image has been Photoshopped, he admits to it right there on the page. However, the PS was mostly just to adjust the colors and lighting - he didn't, like, add the balloons in from a different source, or move them around, or anything like that.

2006-03-22 03:09:57 AM
I'd like to see the pre-photoshop original.

Are the two balloons on their sides also "dipping into a river"? Or would you call that crashing? I would think this kind of "stunt flying" would not be attempted in such close quarters. Really, I've been to ballooning events...this is what it looks like when they are taking off, usually from a large empty area devoid of tall things like trees.

2006-03-22 03:11:40 AM
I used to live just down the hill from Rio Rancho and if you woke up early enough (I'm 19, so that rarely happened) you'd get to see a sight like this every morning for a couple weeks. Pretty cool stuff. Albuquerque doesn't have much, but the balloon fiesta is worth a visit.
