The taking of a human life is wrong. To me, it's that simple.

Haha. You people... I'm not in favor of the death penalty, but every now and then you hear cases of people who weren't guilty that fried...

It's pretty sad.

For all you against Death Sentences: I'm feeling a murderous rampage coming on and I need a state that won't fry me when I get caught. Any suggestions?

Myth: We shouldn't waste tax dollars keeping murderers alive in prison.

State studies show that it is far more expensive to execute someone than to give them life in prison, due to the lengthy appeals process designed to avoid executing the innocent. Even under the system of appeals, there have been at least 350 cases this century where people were given the death sentence and were later proven clearly innocent. Therefore, the appeals process cannot be shortened without increasing the percentage of innocent people executed.

I agree with whatever disposal method costs the least. A killer certain to spend his life in prison makes me feel plenty secure.

The biggest problem with capital punishment is that it gets so much press and glamourizes the criminal. Wouldn't this only serve to motivate a sick mind to killing? A crazed person might think, "Let's see if I can kill so many folks I'll get put to death. I could get my picture in the newspaper. Who cares? I am never going to amount to anything anyway."

Lock 'em up, throw away the key, and forget this slime ever existed. It's the smart way to handle violent criminals.

sorry this is late, but i wanted to add in reply to Stringwave5.

it's funny when morons blame the death penalty on george bush or somebody else. if bush's policy was the only thing that mattered, abortion would be outlawed by now.

the sad fact to many liberal crybabies and right-wing wackos alike is that a solid majority still almost always prevails on large issues. with the public being somewhere near 3:1 on these issues any government entity that tried to challenge that wouldn't be a government entity for long. the system actually works sometimes.

blame americans for being stupid if you think they are (our european friends will love that, no doubt). or you can cry adn scream about how americans don't understand the issue because of some vast conspiracy and they can never see it as clearly as you do in all of your insight. but don't think you can blame bush for the death penalty. dumbasses.

just my own personal opinion, which as i just pointed out doesn't count for much by itself.

I had to do a major paper debating the death penalty for a class I had in Criminology and there is no better resource on Death Row stats than the Texas Dept of Criminal Justice. You can find whose been executed from years and years ago, you can see whose been chosen the next lucy contestant to come on down, you can even find out what they did (eg., Murdering a video store clerk, braining a man witha shovel, cutting the throats of sleeping elderly victims in a robbery gone very bad, that sort of thing). Beleive me, this website held most of my argument together...you can tell that half of these guys are semi- or full blown mentally ill...yet they decide to murder them anyway. Damn Republicans. Thumbs up Stringwave5!

I'm sick of hearing from those whiney anti-death penalty who'd rather flip off the victims and hug the criminals who deserve what they get.

I am in favor of the DP, but not the kind of executions the thugs are getting. They're getting the way out too easy. They deserve a painful death simply because of the way they had done to their victims. In fact, they deserve to die in the same way they did to the victims.

If one got stabbed to death, he/she deserves to be stabbed to death as well. Match the punishment with the crime.

What makes me even more sick is they call the DP inhumane, well, lemme tell you this folks, what do you call it when they kill their victims? Humane? BS!

If I could change the way the executions takes place. I would give the victim's families the option of carrying out the executions themselves and let them choose how they want to kill them.

The only rule I would give the families is no prolonged torture. The executions should be at least 15 minutes. No more.

If the criminals are still alive at that point, he/she gets a bullet in the back of the head between the head and neck where the spinal cord is located.

No victim deserves to die and neither should the criminals who killed them be allowed to live.

Also, as far as appeals are concerned, they should get at least one appeal and if they can't still prove their innocence at that time period (say 6 months?), they should be executed immediately. 20 years of appeals is absolute bullcrap. The longer they appeal, the longer justice is denied.

Copernicus65 -- "you can tell that half of these guys are semi- or full blown mentally ill...yet they decide to murder them anyway."

It's not murder, it's justice.

Besides, if they were mentally ill, they're still capable of taking an innocent life.

Anyone who displays mental defects of any kind and has already proven to be capable of taking an innocent life is considered dangerous to society as a whole.

Locking up killers among the general prison population is stupid since they could kill anyone in prison. They're a threat to other prisoners, guards and to anyone the killer comes into contact with. Keeping killers alive in prisons or in mental hospitals is risky at best. We can't take these kind of chances. They need to be put to death so they can't again harm anyone else.

Even if they do get locked up in a 24/7 small cell, the lives of the guards are at risk when they have to let them out for an hour of showering and exercises before they are taken back into their cell. A killer has one chance and if he/she is strong enough to kill a guard with their bare hands, they will do it. It's too risky keeping them alive and way too costly as well. Putting them to death is far cheaper than keeping them alive in prison for the rest of thier life. It doesn't have to be expensive putting them to death either.

Yizuman: In Texas, capital murder gets an automatic appeal. In fact, you are not even allowed to plead guilty.

I just noticed that the newly re-designed Drew Curtis Presents Drew Curtis's Fark.com does not have the Saudi counter at the left.

Hurry up and off the rest of them on death row. I have a deserving friend/coworker in need of a heart transplant.

Where is Henry Ford and his assembly line when you need it?

Nice thread-jacking.

Anyway, we need the death penalty in Canada. It sucks having liberal and conservative beliefs because you can never vote for somebody who you agree with completely. Maybe one day I'll conform and attach that lovely liberal or conservative label on my forehead and say goodbye to thinking.
