Those are S-3 Vikings. Submarine hunters mainly, also able to lay mines. They can stand on a wingtip and spin in a crazy tight circle and spit torpedoes at any unfortunate submarine they find. Really cool planes.

My vote for prettiest would have to be the B1B, especially when it's wings are folded back.

Eh, this picture was either shot with a weird white balance, or had its color balance tweaked in Photoshop. Interesting effect, but not all that amazing. Here's a sunset I shot with white balance set for underwater pictures. Same effect, same colors.

I spent 4 years on one of those bastards. Trust me, after weeks without seeing the sun at all there is nothing less inpressing than a sunset. Think temporary retinia burn. Not to mention the pure and undying hatred of those airwing farkers.

Trdizzake, MasterThief,

Oh man, tell me about it...I don't remember 'Marilyn's' but that was in 1989 I was there. We went to this heavy metal bar all the time and the name is on the tip of my tongue...'Apocolypse' maybe?

I hooked up with a girl who charged double and picked you instead of you picking her (apparently she could do that because she was all that...and I agree). She was a spitting image of Michelle Malkin except with a cutesy-bob haircut. I literally passed out the first go around...whew.

Here's my favorite...

[image from too old to be available]

I always thought the F4's were just evil looking fighters. It's also the only aircraft flown by both The Blue Angels and The Thunderbirds at the same time.
2006-03-20 12:39:14 PM
In typical form, I'm too lazy to look it up but I thought that the Blue Angels flew A-4s prior to the F/A-18s. They do look a bit like small F4s.
2006-03-20 12:41:43 PM
My favourite:

[image from too old to be available]

C'mon, who doesn't love this thing? They went to the defense contractors and said "See this gun? Build a flying tank around it."

What an antique...but they named the hog appropriately.

Not the A-10's only problem, but one if its more glaring, is that it only has two speeds.

...plodding and parked.
2006-03-20 01:07:19 PM
I must say I have a place in my heart for the A-10.

Blackbird is awesome too (and the band SR-71 ain't bad either).

Although my favourite aircraft is definitely the veritech from Macross

Check out on usenet. There's a steady stream of U.S. military and NASA aircraft photos there, most of them hi-res enough to use as wallpaper. Both current and historical shots, too.

Spoken like a true member of the Fighter Mafia.

I would like to point out that in fact its slow speed is a positive boon when trying to hit things on the ground. Hard to hit something thats pasteurized before you see it*.

I had two of them fly over me when I was a teenager (back when Griffiss was still in operation). I was canoeing on Stillwater Resevoir in the Adirondacks. Stillwater sits smack dab in the middle of one of the FALCON MOA's. I swear I could have hit them with the paddle, not that it would have bothered them. 'Course, a paddle would probably bring down one of them fancy-schmancy go-fast "well, it's really a fighter but I guess we could stick some bombs on it and call it a 'ground attack model'" planes.

*Say it out loud.

Didn't they just retire the F-14 from service? Sad, but it had to happen one day.

SR-71, cool.
A-10, cooler.
P-51D Mustang, coolest.

2006-03-20 01:36:19 PM
It is a shame that the A-10 that was so good at low and slow in the 80's is now relegated to a 3rd string position. But...that was long ago when PGM's weren't available, and going down on the deck to 'gun one' with the olk MK1 eyeball was R. Lee Ermey cool.

Now days though with Manpads, AAA and medium missiles the only time the A-10's get any action is long after the other airforce is gone...and any chance of manpads in minimal. Basically it goes in with the mess cooks and the motor pool guys.

Highest loss rate of any Airforce plane in the Gulf war, fratricide problem, not netcentric, not able to fly above the threat and deliver PGM's... Marines who were interviewed in OIF said that the worst news they could get was that an A-10 was all they had available for CAS. Frat.

Low and slow now days will just get you a manpad up the pipe.

Thank god its paid for...
2006-03-20 01:46:55 PM
gurple, yes, they flew A4's prior to F18's, but before the A4's they flew F4's. And The Thunderbirds, after the F4, flew T38's, then transitioned to the F16.

I knows my Blue Angels. :)

And I thought that "rainbow action off the fantail" was suggestive. Your post was rife with innuendo. Also jargon.

Matt 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

Matt 16:2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, [It will be] fair weather: for the sky is red.

Matt 16:3 And in the morning, [It will be] foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O [ye] hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not [discern] the signs of the times?

/Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 16, Verses 1-3 (King James Version)
2006-03-20 04:30:44 PM
I still think teh A-10 rocks, fratricide aside. We used to go to Ft Walton Beach, Fla when I was a kid. We could walk a couple fo mile up teh beach to the fence at Eglin and watch the planes come in on bomb runs. The A-10s were best- they cam in so low, you didn't even see them until they were on top of you, and you barely heard them until they were past. Saw a 3-inch sheet of armor steel they'd shot with the gun- front side had a 2 inch hole in it, back side looked like a crater on the moon. Friggin awesome.

Yes, I revel in destructive capabilities, and am amazed at how well we've figured out how to kill each other.
2006-03-20 04:59:41 PM
This is late, but just for the record, the coolest plane ever built was the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.

Not a Navy CTR, Army 05H. Same job. I did date a female CTR for a while, though. Nothing in the World like pillow talk in Morse.
