Again?

This is like their fifth boycott in the past year, for 2-3 different reasons.

The ads in question weren't even in US publications.

In declaring a one-year boycott of Ford, the AFA cited ...and its practice of requiring employees to undergo diversity training.

What company in the US doesn't have diversity training required nowadays? Anyone?

I don't understand the point of their "boycotts". They boycotted Disney for their wicked ways for years, during which time Disney saw huge profits & record park attendance.
After years of no effect whatsoever, Wildmon announced that Disney had learned their lesson & that the boycott was off.

"The goal of every homosexual organization supported by Ford is to get homosexual marriage legalized," the AFA said.

Too bad they have absolutely no logical reason to oppose it other than "because the bible days so".

dustbunnyboo: I don't understand the point of their "boycotts".

Publicity.

A major news organization will run a story if the press release for the boycott mentions a hot topic issue and a major corporation. It doesn't even matter if the boycott is successful, they would have still recruited more like-minded people to their organization.

...Anyone have any popcorn?

But why would Ford pay any attention if the end result of the boycott is nothing at worst or good times at best? Disney ignored them & did just fine. The same with other companies.

In my mind, there is no reason for any company (aside from one who gets most of their business from fundamentalists) to even give Wildmon the time of day.
As for like-minded individuals, I suppose you are correct, but do you really think this sort of thing drags folks from their armchairs & into the fray?

dustbunnyboo: But why would Ford pay any attention if the end result of the boycott is nothing at worst or good times at best?

A corporation's PR department will utilize any oportunity to take advantage of press. They can spin their side just as the boycotting motherfarkers spin theirs, and the whole thing spins on the nightly news and it keeps the earth ...spinning.

If they can turn it to their advantage, they will. If they can't, they'll ignore it and issue the standard "no comment," or better yet SUE and release a "cannot comment on pending litigation."

This is all especially true if they truly believe such a boycott to be useless. They can experiment with their power a bit.

Has anyone proved that even 1-2 million people have heeded the boycotts?

Woohoo!!!

It's funny how standing up for what you believe in can bring so much greif if it's not the "popular" or "trendy" thing to do.

This is horrible PR for Ford...

If I was Ford, I'd run ads that say 'We're being boycotted by bigots.'

I can't imagine being so concerned with a company being vaguely sympathetic to gays that they would actually boycott something. I'm pretty sure that borders on psychosis.

Like whenever gay people stand up for their rights and get grief for it?

Years from now, nobody's going to believe that Ford ever even gave these yahoos the time of day.

Because as Christians the most important thing on our to do list should be condemning non-Christians for their behavior.

Screw feeding the poor, don't worry about helping widows and orphans and that whole "Love your neighbor" crap will have to wait until we are done hating first!

2006-03-14 01:30:39 PM
I guess I just don't understand the point of boycotts like this. If you believe that homosexuals are comitting sin and that they will be judged by God, how does boycotting a single company make any difference? People already know what you believe so you're not getting any traction for your cause.

Homosexual acts are a sin according to the bible, but they're not any more a sin than lying, stealing, or taking the lord's name in vain. When you single them out for special hatred it's bigotry at it's ugliest and basest level.

/Jesus taught us to love the sinner even if we hate the sin.

I will look at Fords when I buy this year, but I will buy whomever I feel is the best to suit my purchase - no matter the AFA asshats.

I don't believe that visiting prostitutes is moral behaviour. Thus I don't visit prostitutes. Then again if some guy I don't know wants to it really isn't my business is it?

If you don't believe homosexual intercourse is moral behaviour, don't engage in it. Why should anoyone else care what someone else does as long as consenting adults are involved?

I'm boycotting Ford, too, based entirely on the suckiness of their vehicles.

It's vanity and pride - they like to feel powerful and righteous by threatening and harassing others.

Funny how you propose treating people differently just because you find their behavior gross (even though no one is harmed in any way) is something that should be the state law.

Treat people equally. Religion has no place in American Law, and there is no reason outside of religion to treat these people differently.

Weird . . . I just bought a Ford Expedition, mainly as a good family vehicle. That, and you can park a B-52 in the back and still have room for the baby seat.

2006-03-14 01:36:54 PM
Here's hoping Ford just shrugs its collective shoulders and says, "Okay, whatever." That's what Dear Abby did a while back when some "pro-family" guy puffed up his feathers and warned her that he was about to write her off as "a mouthpiece for the gay agenda."

That 1-2 million number is just something they pulled out of thier ass.
I know for a fact that the AFA has only about 3500 active members.
. . . I know this because I once worked for a company that was the target of one of their "action alerts".

Those 3500 people can seem like a million or so when they are harrassing you day in and day out, jamming your phone and fax lines, incoming email, etc. Because each one of them will send you a copy of the "action alert" day after day.

In the end, it generally turns out to be good publicity for whoever they target, because most Americans are amused by the AFA's "outrage", and tend to come out in support of the target.

Henry Ford was an anti-Semite.

He wrote books about his ideas. None of which were very good (the ideas or the books).

I figure the current actions are--of sorts--a way of trying to distance the past of the company. You know, love the queers to make up for the history of the company.

History is more or less bunk. It's tradition. We don't want tradition. We want to live in the present, and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today.

2006-03-14 01:39:41 PM
/Gee, do people really follow the AFA?

Sadly some do. My brother-in-law was visiting and reminded me that AFA had declared a boycott on Kraft products because they were a sponsor in the "Gay Olympics". I replied, "Yeah, cuz we know God really cares about wether or not those homos get a medal!"

It was a tense visit.

2006-03-14 01:40:05 PM
You can't even really say Disney "defeated" them. They just kept doing business as usual until the AFA realized their efforts were futile. Then they try and save face and say "Disney learned its lesson." Puhlease.

Why does stuff like this make the "news" anyway. I couldn't give a flaming rat turd what kind of cars these homophobes buy.

Does anyone really give a damn about this stuff?

Well do you expect gay rights advocates to applaud the AFA for this? Of course the AFA is going to get grief, just like gay advocates get grief from the AFA

2006-03-14 01:41:44 PM
I think there are a lot more gay people than AFA members. Now with Ford being under fire for somewhat supporting homosexuality, it's got to be even better PR for Ford with the gays. When you throw two aquaintances together and try to pick a fight, those two aquaintances become allies in some cases. To sum it up: AFA needs to pick a fight now and then to not be forgotten.

I thought that needed repeating.

Seriously, if you think gays, cartoonists or anyone else are going to hell, then why do you even need to bother with the hate? Hasn't your god taken care of that for you? Can't you just sit around being smug about your salvation and not, you know, annoy the rest of us?

So much for the basic teachings of Jesus. Apprantly this group either missed them or decided to leave it out for their own reaons. I try to follow them but im not pefect either.

"Love one another, as I have loved you"

"Forgive eachother, as I have forgivin you"

"Do not judge, for you yourself shall be judged as well"

"Those who are without sin, cast the first stone"

/Lutheran
//Hates seeing people/groups like this
///does not condone this kind of christian behavior
////no problem with gays. Just don't hit on me.
