In 2000, I remember the majority of the nation voting for Al Gore and that freedom, the freedom to chose your President, was taken from us and was replaced by someone the majority didn't choose.

And yet, every recount showed he lost and you keep biatching? Its worse than people blaming Clinton for this stuff and getting extremely old.

$2TacoBill is correct in asking what freedoms have you lost? I would venture to say that none of you have lost shiat and need something to blame because the other party has no platform.

2006-03-13 08:58:58 AM
the_geek - You never had that freedom. Your ignorance of the laws of the republic don't change that.

Yes. We're a Republic. I know. Stop being a dick. But I'd say the Supreme Court was more responsible for Bush being the POTUS than the people.

Hmmmm, is she saying that people should not be permitted to speak out against the judiciary?

There's a BIG difference between "speaking out" against a decision and threatening violence.

Speaking out involves words like "disagree," "appeal," "rewriting legislation."

Then there's this:

DeLay: "The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior."

Cornyn: "I don't know if there is a cause and effect connection, but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country ... And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters, on some occasions, where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in violence."

Jesus 2.0: /I would have thought that someone who just discovered that his understanding of a simple political term conflicts with that of a former Supreme Court Justice of the United States of America might put a little more thought into it than simply jumping to the immediate conclusion that the former Supreme Court Justice of the United States is the one who is wrong about it.

Read my above post, retard. Then answer the question.

$2TacoBill: Please, tell me, people: What freedoms have you lost in the past 6 years? I read these threads and people will cry about how individual freedoms are being shiatcanned by the current administration, but no one can ever say what freedoms they have personally lost.

I have lost the right of freedom against search and seizure without a warrant. That's in the top ten of Constitutional freedoms. I've also lost quite a bit of free speech rights with respect to 'free speech zones.' (Yes, the dems had them too)

In what way have you lost your Fourth Amendment protections? To the best of my knowledge, in order for evidence seized in a search to be used against you in any court of law, it has to have been found pursuant to the execution of a valid warrant, or it has to fall under specific exceptions that have been in place for decades.

Be specific.

2006-03-13 08:59:41 AM
Fortunately I don't live in the US, so a dictatorship over there will never affect me in any way.

Wait, yes it will.

That is the danger that Sandra Day O'Connor is talking about.

Actually she's saying that the intimidation and control of the judicial system is a step towards dictatorship.

But your soap box comments work just as well too.

No, it didn't happen to me, you simpleton. But the government now has that power. I'm only supposed to concerned with a government's abuse of power after it's happened to me personally? What the hell kind of bullshiat lemming-sheep mentality is that?

Their has been this little story about NSA wiretapping that the Bush administration authorized...without warrants before, during, or after those wiretaps. Yeah, that's nothing, using evidence against people with no basis to have obtained that evidence in the first place.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Any other takers?

LOL, that happens when you walk down streets with hookers.

But seriously, I used to always get asked for ID just being out at a certain hour. The cops have always done that and you decide to blame it on Bush?

apparently, according to half the folks on fark, we lived in a locked-down police state, with bush personally monitoring the cameras in our living rooms.

Please. Is that all you've got? Straw men?

As O'Connor said (not coincidentally, in this article that we're supposedly discussing here):

"It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings."

So, the Statue of Liberty will still stand, the monuments in D.C. will remain, we'll still have mayors, governors, senators, etc. The beauracracy will continue to function, kids will still play Little League in the park. In fact, many people won't notice the difference. Sure, there'll be a few more 'security' measures and restrictions on liberties - for our protection of course-, but come on, how many of your 'rights' do you actually use regularly anyway? steamingpile, if your benchmarks are Scalia and Thomas, yes, I guess O'Connor would be "far-left." But then so would 99% of Americans.

She was a "swing" justice and a moderate. Can't have those, can we.

To be fair, if she's so concerned about creeping fascism, perhaps she shouldn't have retired during the reign of George II. She ain't exactly old and doddering -- compared with John Paul Stevens, anyway.

My fellow 'muricans. Yesterday's cowardly turr'ist attack on 'murica will not go unpunished. Under the war powers granted to me by the Congress, and after careful deliberation with my staff, I am taking the neccessary step of declaring martial law and suspending the upcoming election indefinitely, until these turr'ists are rooted out. These freedom-hating cowards cannot be allowed to destroy our democracy, but to have an election now would be to play into their evil hands. We need to be diligent in our fight against the turr'ists, because they hate our freedom. Thank you and God bless you all!

Oooh, oooh, I'll take this one. You do know that the major telecommunications companies have been giving copies of communications that have at least one side overseas to the government since at least the Wilson administration(of WWI fame), don't you? Its not like it hasn't been public knowledge, everyone familiar with the history of Signals Intelligence (admittedly, not very many) knows about it. Go read up on it. You can find the information in "The Codebreakers" by David Kahn and "The Puzzle Palace" by James Bamford. Both books have been out for decades.

That means it has been going on for at least 89 years.

You didn't lose that one, you never had it.

Try another one skippy.
