Ahhhhh......somewhat odd, yet not uncommon occurance, and the True American Patriots sell their stocks.

Assbags.

2002-05-29 02:41:36 PM
It certainly had nothing to do with the fact that equities are still insanely over-valued by any conventional measure, and that T-Bills are almost certain to out-perform them this decade.

(so it's flamebait. what's it to you?)

2002-05-29 02:41:46 PM
Am I the olny one that read "pooping manhole lids"?

2002-05-29 02:42:30 PM
Um.....I doubt it.

The market didn't exactly tumble. It was down, what? 30 points? Big deal.

But it makes for a better headline if they say the market tumbled because someone got scared by a popping manhole cover and thought it was a terrorist attack.

Tune out the news. It's all garbage.

2002-05-29 02:42:59 PM
No one's touching MY manhole!

2002-05-29 02:43:20 PM

What conventional measure would that be, Wabbitoid?

StevieB:

Start with P/E. Also dig dividends. For retail, look at price to sales.

Also dig the simple fact that QQQ (the Nasdaq top 100) had a net loss, combined, of over 100B$ last year. And that the Nasdaq P/E is still running over 40.

So will this mean that when I go thru baggage check at the airports they will no longer let me board the plane with a manhole cover in my carry on bag ?

2002-05-29 02:53:04 PM
Everyone in my office was all worried because 34th and 23rd streets were closed. But this manhole stuff happens all the time. Manhole popping is especially common in the West Village.

2002-05-29 02:53:31 PM
The same thing happened on Hudson street outside my gym this past Sunday. Two big shattered windows and no electricity on the block for several hours. Never heard a peep about it on the news.... The manhole went up in the air many, many stories. weird.

2002-05-29 02:54:05 PM
Manhole popping is especially common in the West Village.

Uh-huh.

Who cares about the P/E figure? Trailing, it's expensive. Forward, it's cheap.

Retail P/S ratios: Walmart's a tad over 1 times sales. Target's just under it. Smaller chains are trading at historical lows. Not as low as 6 months ago, but still low.

Dividend yield: most of the companies that have higher dividends trade for low P/E's, and many of them are looking like pretty good investments for the next 5 years.

Tech, yeah, it sucks. And it'll suck for another year or two. That isn't the market unless your whole portfolio is Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, and Suck.com.

If you invest blindfolded, the market will return you 6% to 7%. Bonds will probably beat that. If you invest and pay attention to what's going on and stop listening to CNBC, you can get a solid 10%, which will likely be better than the bond market.

And I realize, that you and I are probably the only ones on this board who give a shiat about any of this, so I'm going to stop now.

Words of wisdom:
Reason for manhole covers being round?
Because the manholes are round.
Glad I could clear that up for you!
(Actually there's another reason that the holes and covers are round. Anyone know why? Uh...oh yeah... Anyone CARE why?)

Up and down they go
Manhole covers and stocks too
Please leave us alone!

Shaggie: If they were any other shape, they could be turned a certain way and actually fall through the hole, injuring those below. A circle is the only shape that does not allow this.

Yes, I am full of useless knowledge.

2002-05-29 03:06:26 PM
SteveieB, Wabbitoid: So am I going to learn about all of this stuff in some sort of undergraduate finance class? Or are you guys stock brokers by profession?

2002-05-29 03:09:50 PM
Undergrad class could do it. Or just read a couple of books on the subject and you'll pick it up. I'm not a broker, by any stretch.

2002-05-29 03:10:32 PM
Holy cow.
We're a bunch of jittery b.itches, aren't we?

And I see it's haiku time!

Pop! goes the iron disc.
Drop in the financial world.
Stop being so scared.

2002-05-29 03:21:52 PM
And my friends all thought I was crazy when I told them that I never walked over manhole covers for this very reason.

I'm serious. I always walk around them. Those things are like land mines.

2002-05-29 03:27:14 PM
StevieB, you are sadly misinformed as to the value of stocks. The dividend on stocks was at one time larger than the return on bonds. This was because of the perceived risk. Then people factored in growth. The P/E on the S&P is over 40 now and will go way up when the funny accounting is taken into consideration. There is not enough growth in the market to sustain that. But you are alluding to the new, new economy? OMFGWWJD

2002-05-29 03:34:02 PM
In other news, I lost my twinkie.

2002-05-29 03:38:03 PM
FarkU -

You are considering a trailing P/E ratio when you compare it to the market. Not every sector in the market is doing poorly or is in a recession. Many sectors are doing great right now, and others are poised for growth. You're completely ignoring healthcare, housing, retail, food, financials and consumer staples. You're ignoring the performance and value of small caps and mid caps relative to large caps in down sectors such as energy, drugs, and technology. Quit focusing on tech, and maybe you'll get a clearer picture.

2002-05-29 03:49:40 PM
Pooping manhole lids, eh?

2002-05-29 03:51:15 PM
healthcare - will remain strong, housing - bubble, retail food staples - commodities dependant on macroeconomics, financials - no opinion other than profits must scale with macroeconomics and trading volumes. Quit focusing on stocks and look at fed actions, the global economy, and the price of gold. The ponzi scheme dow will fall too.
