Even more priceless: Finding their HDTV is not compatable with the next gen DVD technology. Over 3 million existing HDTVs will not work with blu-ray or HD-DVD.

The idiots were the ones who picked up D-VHS a few years ago.

F*ck BluRay.

"Software for the new player will be released on May 23 by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Lionsgate Films."

On media that won't last more than 2-3 years. Thanks guys, now how about making a technology that lasts?

submitter: Blu-Ray Disc Player: $1,000.

Blu-Ray disc player that plays games, too: much less.

What a bargain. I'll take a gross.

Action Replay Nick: F*ck BluRay.

Quoted for truth.

I can't wait to drop four digits on a screen that has the same resolution as my five year old $400 trinitron.

And of course to embrace their GIANT WEB of encrypted equipment; no control over the A/V equipment for us filthy hippies.

God bless the early adopters, to whom we owe the honor of paying a ton of money to beta test new technology that the rest of us will eventually buy at a fraction of their price.

Play Station 3: Your first born.

I can't wait until those brilliant hackers found out a way to bootleg this new format. Hopefully they'll have it done within 1 year from the release date of the format.

Sounds like a bomb in the making to me, and I just bought a 28" HDTV with only RGB cables a few months ago. And the reason why Blu-Ray will only work on HDMI cables is because the cables themselves have copy-protection on them. I have little doubt they could make this work on RGB component cables, they just don't want to. And I'm not going to upgrade to some format that has copy protection in the cables, so I can get f*cked with by the industry whenever they decide to. If they want me to upgrade to something, they'll do it on my terms, or I won't do it.

I'd move to Europe where NO ONE would know me. Pick up some nice hobbies, learn a new language, culture, and possibly change my name.

I'm assuming within a couple weeks of it coming out you'll at least be able to get some hardware readers that output nonencrypted, or at least a box that decrypts the HDMI and outputs it raw.

May have to import it though, the DMCA is likely to be threatened to block sales of anything that can be used in either fashion.

Smells like Beta-max

And the funny part is that HDMI uses a small number of factory selected DES keys. DES encryption is old enough that hobbyists with a decent cluster of computers on the Internet can break it.

If ANY of these next gen formats take off, it won't be for another 10 years.

The next player I get will probably be a DVD recorder for the TV.

Disc? Physical media is just so 2005.

I may go the HD-DVD route. Street price of a toshiba player will likely be ~$400 and I usually rent and not buy so I'm covered there too.

I have a hard time believing Blu-ray isn't doa, given the info above.

How the fack is Sony gonna sell the PS3 for less than 1000 bucks then if it uses Blu-Ray???

Hairdo Loss leader system, make it up in games and movies. Pretty typical in the video game industry. Also, I've heard the components, including the Blu-Ray part, only cost them around $800, which means the Blu-Ray-only machines for $1000 are just ripping you off for several hundred bucks.

Movie Titles: $30-$40

I balk at paying $17 for a DVD today. I only watch movies once, and for me to buy something, it has to be a damn good.

For example, I bought snatch, and it was damn good.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but boycott both formats. If the most compelling argument for hi-def video discs is they'll look good on a multitude of mutually incompatible large screen TVs, we need to sort that problem out first.

You spent $17 for snatch??

nothing doing till I can recode it to h264 for enjoyment on my laptop. 1920x1200 screens ftw.

See, I was exited by the screen till they announced only special OEM computers could play this. So these formats are going to take a good 5-10 years to get rolling, and I will only use it once I can put these movies on there.

50 First Dates and Hitch are among the release titles.

Without piracy to blame for the lack of sales, surely they'll have to finally admit that the problem is movies suck.

With you 100%. I still think both formats will fail. I'm not spending any money on any of this until it is universal.

we can't even get a majority of people to use broadband.

PlayStation 4 will be out before Blu-Ray takes off.
